I just heard from my sister that one of the cousins has some snapshots with my Dad in them that were taken at the old Dahmer family hunting/fishing camp on the Cache River in Southern Illinois. I didn't get to go visit while I was hope this past trip but Christmas will see me deep in their photo albums to see if that's true. This stuff is too precious for words, really nice.

Destry, give Don a hint about what an original photo like his railbird shot would sell for on the open market. They are just wonderful shots.

Depends on what type of photo it actually is really. A photo on a heavy cardstock backer or a real photo postcard showing railbirding would bring pretty good money. If it's just a snapshot the price would be quite a bit lower. For some reason the brownie camera type snapshot photos just don't go that high.

To me, if I had photos like this of family, nobody would have enough money to buy them.

The little snapshot of my Dad I've got that shows him holding up his first double barrel and first storebought fishing rod is worth more than any Parker I currently own, at least to me that is.

The railbird photo is an 5x7 on whatever regular photo paper would be from those days. It was a great surprise to see it in the album.

Is the "Sky Top" hunting club at Mount Pocono the same "Sky Top" lodge that exists today? I wonder if the building in the picture is still standing. I have not been to Sky Top, but some of us have.

They are some great pics, the frozen deer I liked that one.
Oldmans creek? is that in Salem or Gloucester county? and did the Barnegat sneakbox survive thru the years?

Oldmans creek is in Salem county and unfortunately none of the duck boats survived :(

Old Hunting Pictures
 

I live in Pedricktown, NJ and interested in the pictures of Jumbo. We don't have many historical pictures of that area and was wondering if the person who posted them was willing to copy me through email. Thank you so much. Lew and Carol McF

I grew up hunting ducks near Finns Point in Salem County where the NWR is presently located. Great hunting. I sure do miss it. My father and grandfather also hunted Mannington Meadow and near Mad Horse Creek. Fortunately, the boats in our family have survived. I've got a classic 1920's railbird skiff, a lapstrake railbird skiff like the one in A.B. Frost's wonderful print and a good old Alumacraft Ducker. All tucked away safely in my barn. The guns and decoys are still in the family too. South Jersey had a culture that revolved aroung gunning and Maryland is a poor substitute. Thanks for showing the wonderful photos.

Killed my first duck (drake ringneck) on the Wading River near New Gretna about 55 years ago. Can still remember it vividly

There is a great picture in there of a Barnegat Bay Sneak Boat. I have always wanted to build one as a winter project. Fantastic duck boat.

Those are GREAT pictures, and you are a very lucky man to have them, thanks for sharing.

First pic: Youngster (now 94) with his little rifle protecting his baby sister but thinking about shooting some gophers.

Second pic: Youngster's great-grandma giving a life lesson. "Now listen up boy. See that dust yonder? Them's revenooers a comin'. Keep that gun o' yorn under the car, jest in case I needs it."
