Shall we through this one off the island?
I showed this gun to Dave Suponski and Larry Frey today before we shot sporting clays at Wallingford Rod and Gun. [Edgar you missed a great time but your leaves are probably more in control than mine by now.]
They Loved the DHBP.
This gun will be an upcoming PP article.
Its on its way to Brad Bachelder for a review. The barrels will look different for sure.
I was going to consign it to the scrap heap until last April when my interest is those weird Damascussy guns sitting in my attic was piqued by my Vintager friends.
I actually fired it. I report no injuries.

Rick Losey 11-04-2012 05:53 PM

Scrappppp???????

admitidly - no setters on the right side but stilll---

60 numbers after the one I have been hunting with this year,

looking forward to seeing it redone.

John Campbell 11-04-2012 07:03 PM

Now THIS early hammerless gun is worth some restorative efforts. Bachelder will be a good choice.

Best, Kensal

george i really like this gun...looks like she mite have 26 inch barrels thats a plus in my eyes...i really like them super long barrels but i have a heart also for short barrel guns as well...looks to me like a butt plate would have her in good shape..brad can sure make those damascus barrels look pretty.... charlie

Dean Romig 11-04-2012 09:48 PM

That Grade 2 shows the earliest engraving scheme of that grade. Very nice condition too. That is a worthwhile project George.

Charlie
I can't tell you yet but you are going to LOVE this gun, hint hint hint.

Daryl Corona 11-05-2012 07:03 AM

Don't tell me it's an 8 ga.

Mills Morrison 11-05-2012 09:43 AM

I too like that early G grade hammerless engraving.

Mills Morrison 11-07-2012 07:53 PM

Well, this post inspired me to bid on an early GH on Gunbroker and I have now "won" it and payment is on the way. The looking back birds are in the same pose as the toplever hammer Grade 2's.

George M. Purtill 11-07-2012 08:16 PM

GH lovers

All right Mills. Show us the link or copy some pics here.
Congratulations.

Mills Morrison 11-07-2012 08:18 PM

Pictures will be forthcoming when she arrives

Mills Morrison 11-07-2012 09:07 PM

A good Parker Pages article would be the variations on G grade engraving. Just in my small collection, there is a lot of variation.

Mills,
Congratulations on your new G grade and I look forward to reading your article in the spring Parker Pages.

What can one do about that butt plate? Can you get an original, or do they make replicas?

there are replicas available for many of the Parker buttplates.

Galazan's for one carries several sizes

John Campbell 11-12-2012 08:22 AM

Steve:
Nothing against Galazan, but I've always been happier with the repro buttplates offered by NC Ordnance. Check them out at gungrip.com

It appears that the NC Ordnance buttplates are molded out of plastic, is that correct? I understand that Galazan's repro buttplates are like the originals---made of hard rubber.

John Campbell 11-12-2012 11:46 AM

The Galazan catalog says you're right. Could have fooled me. Nonetheless, there are also "fill-out" and fit issues to consider. Thus, I tend to choose NC Ord. But Galazan may have improved by now. Who knows.

I've only purchased two hard rubber reproduction buttplates from Galazan, one for a Trojan, the other for a Fox. Both had the correct screw hole spacing and were slightly oversized, so a proper fit could be made.

George M. Purtill 11-12-2012 05:03 PM

I have never replaced a DHBP. is the number on the back equivalent to the frame size?

John Campbell 11-13-2012 08:16 AM

George:
Yes. At least that's what is supposed to be the case.

Here she is. She needs some TLC, but shiny bores, good lock up, and I love the early GH engraving.

Now those are happy birds, not caged up like later GH's.
Thanks Mills

Mills Morrison 11-15-2012 09:09 PM

Very pleased with this purchase. It needs a new butt pad and the wood is worn with old repairs. Will see how she does on clays this weekend.

Brent Francis 11-16-2012 12:08 AM

I love G engraving. Are those penquins on the right side?

Mills Morrison 11-16-2012 07:43 AM

Did not think of penguins, but they could be. Looks like Chilly Willy

charlie cleveland 11-16-2012 11:17 AM
