Parker Remington
After the 1937 buyout was the quality different? I am looking at a 1940 VHE 20 Gauge skeet gun and I need some comments as to how desireable these Remington Parkers are in relation to the origional Parkers.
|
George, some may say the Remington era guns lack the same level of quality that the earlier guns had, however I have two now and have had others and I believe they are just as robust and reliable as the earlier guns. The Remington era guns are quite collectable in their own right, as are the skeet guns. I would say that the condition and diminsions of the gun will bear more effect on the value than whether it's a Remington gun or not. If it's nice and you like it, buy it.

Hello George , Most of the Fellas that usually answer such questions as yours are away this Weekend to the PGCA Annual Meeting at Georgetown ! I would have to say any of the actual Skeet Guns are very desirable ,especially if marked that it is a Skeet Gun on the Barrel Flats ! The Remington guns are very desirable in any style and Grade ,there are actually far less of them than the Meriden Guns ! I believe all would agree that the quality is very good ,and most have more modern Dimensions ,usually with much less drop in the Heel of the stock . In my opinion the engraving was nicer to my eye on the early guns ,I especially like the engraving style on the early 1900 guns although V Grade Guns were all pretty much the same with just border /line engraving ! Actually many if not most of the Remington guns especially in the lower grades had much nicer wood both Forend and Stock than the Meriden Guns in the same grade ! One other item ,the Meriden guns were marked on the Barrel Rib and were designated by the Grade ,such as the V Grade would say Vulcan Steel , Again ,I like that but that is just me and with that said ,I own a couple of Remington era Guns and think they are quite nice also ,the gun you are looking at wouldn't have any stamping on the rib other than the Barrel Matting ! This sounds like a very nice gun ,I would guess Straight Stock and Beavertail forend , Pictures would be great ! Hope this helps ! Best ; Russ

The A grade display was stupendous. My answer: The Remington guns are every bit as good in my opinion. |

Who won?

Thanks for the feedback on my question!

Someone from California won the raffle gun so if your not from there, there is always next year.
Very nice weather if you were there Thursday afternoon. Friday was nice too but started to get more windy in the afternoon. Friday night it rained pretty hard overnight. Saturday morning started out with drizzle and wind. There were a few times where the rain stopped. It's going to be on and off all day today. I'm heading back to Pa early tomorrow morning and taking a route more westerly than I-95 to keep away from the coast. The wife and I had a really good time, met many people I only had correspondence with previously. It's nice to put faces with the names. I hope all PGCA members have the opportunity to attend a PGCA meeting in the future. |
Hey, I'm not from calif. I want a redraw:crying::crying:

I have two also and though they were made after the purchase, they were made in Meriden. If anything they have nicer wood for the grade than the pre-purchase guns. I think Remigton was trying to prove up on the Parker name by putting showy wood on V grades, etc. I wouldn't hesitate at all and many of those guns, being newer, are in higher condition as well. New faces
Likewise I got to meet Chuck Bishop, share some wine and good low country food.
I joined PGCA in 1992 or whatever and this is my first annual meeting. It wont be my last. |
The Remington made Parkers have some differences in form and finish over Meriden made guns. But the quality is the same.
From a standpoint of collectability, the Remington guns very much so. Not many were made as production figures and sales were low for the period before and during Remington ownership. Actual annual totals are not known for the years 1939 - 1942, but the total for those 4 years is 1,332 guns or about 340 per year with basic division. I think that any Parker collector would like to have the chance to put a Remington made gun into their collection. And a skeet gun no less... sounds like a good find to me if the condition of the gun supports it. I would think that the probability of a Remington Parker being in better overall condition that a earlier Meriden gun is better since it is newer. |
brian those were some mighty good points you made on therem. parkers... charlie

The few Parker employees who moved from Meriden to Ilion will tell you unequivocally that the Ilion-built Parkers were better-built guns. Reread the discussions on the development of the 1/2 frame gun.

Yes Russ, that's what I was looking to see again (and again, and again...) . Do you have pictures of that wonderful checkering design that you can show us again?
I believe both yours and Bruce's were engraved by Robert Runge. |

A friend has a Remington GHE 16 just like those two and the case color is more like the one in the book. He bought it for a very low price at KTP before they had John Dunkle pricing them correctly.
|
Russ... you're KILLIN' me...
|
Dean to your previous statement ,Yes ,I believe that is what we all decided ,also the 410 is quite similar and it is engraved on the Water Table , Engraved by Robert Runge !
|
The GHE has seen little use but the original owner must have carried it in one hand under the receiver as that is the only wear in the case Colors , and it is much better in person than on the picture !
|
Russ, do you have letters on those guns?

Russ,
I have heard you mention a C Grade with barrel wedge engraving. I take it that is it. That truely is a VERY interesting checkering pattern. |

Russ, have you checked with Bob Beach at Griffin & Howe for information on the CHE?
|
Dean ,No I haven't but I will , I am heading out for the "Afternoon Rut Shuffle" ,will report back later ,you guys have a good afternoon !
|
Russ,
There is stock book info on the .410. What's the Sn of the CHE? |
Chuck the Serial # is 240983 , It is a 20 Ga. CHE W/ 26" Barrels ,Dbl Triggers and a Small Beaver Tail Forend ! I believe years ago ,I did purchase a letter " But I can't seem to locate it " and there was no significant info. on this one either ! Thank you for taking a look Chuck ,I appreciate it ! I know I hadn't tried what Dean had previously mentioned and I will give that a try also ! This gun draws quite a lot of attention from everyone who has seen it ,it is a shame there isn't some provenance on it , undoubtedly it is a special gun , I feel very fortunate to be it's Care Taker for a while ! Russ

Wow! Thanks Russ.
