What to do?
ADD said it was a 20ga gh damascus steel 28" bbls clean bores
Gun is a 16ga gh damascus steel 28"bbls clean bores
The gun is to be a hunting gun for me in the woods so I didn't what anything I would have to worry about the wood getting bumbs and scratchs and this was the gun but it's a 16ga, now thats not a bad thing but I have one already in a VH so I was looking forward to a 20ga.and I though I bought it right under 1100.00 As you can tell I"m having trouble making up my mine to keep it or send it back? I know it's hard for someone else making my mine up but has this ever happen to any one else? and what did you do?:banghead:

We never have enough Parkers. Keep it and find a 20 to go with it.

You better appreciate who your audience is: I am sure I am not the only one with several Parkers in my safe that were not exactly what I was looking for, but.....

Sounds like you may have gotten a pretty good deal on the 16. You can always keep it and sell it/use it for trade if/when you find the 20 you are looking for.

Harry& Jay Thanks I would agree can't have to many parkers! If I have the funds that would be great. I was looking forward of taking the 20ga into the wood in Dec. And of course the thing about finding a higher grade 20 for the money I spent. I will be thinking about useing it for trading down the road if I keep it. Thanks again.

I would like to see that $1100.00 Gun. What add ? Sounds like something I have been looking for . I hope I dont get in trouble here.

Frame size is( 1) I will try and get some photos I will warn you it's nothing special. The add that it was for sale!

My rule of thumb on Parkers is: As you go down in gauge from 12 the price/value increases exponentially: If the 12 is $1,000, the same gun in 16 should be $1,500, in 20
$2,500, in 28 $5,000 and in .410 $10,000. A 10 gauge would be @ $1,250.

George, Yes I was thinking that I was getting a great deal on the gun and I'm still thinking the gun is worth the money, My hole thing is looking forward to the little 20ga and finding out it's not, even though I have other 20ga's not a Parker! Were would a 14ga be? I looked the gun up in the Parker book and of course it's not in there, I did the S# here and was made in 1901 has a butt plate that started in 1902 and a grip cap made between 1878 to 1890?

Allen: Send for a letter from PGCA and if they have the card on file the letter will tell you much about your Parker. A 14 gauge would be a very rare item. Better still, joing PGCA ad get your letter for $40 instead of $60.

I can feel your frustration. I once traveled a great distance to buy what I was told was a very nice GH Parker. When I got there, upon seeing the gun, the tubes looked a bit small and yep, it was a 28. Was I disappointed, NO! I even paid the asking price! (True Story)

Geoage, I'm a past member and havn't posted here in some time.If I keep it I will send for a letter. I feel sorry for you on your long travels. If that was me it wouldn't have been a Parker great story! I'm working on photos. Thanks everyone for your replies.

It happened to me last month when purchasing a DH. The gun was advertised as a #3 frame with Damascus. It came in as a 1 1/2 frame with fluid steel. I thought about it for two days while it was sitting on my desk....and that skeleton butt plate began to speak to me, then the grain in the wood...so I polished it. End of story...it shoots pheasants like no tomorrow.

Glad to here it worked out for you and it only took two days. Only if mine would have been a 28 or 410 boy would I be happy.

Looks like a keeper to me if the barrels are true and sound. Is the buttplate a replacement ? I would like to find one in that price range in a 16.

I always look at the condition of a Parker's DHBP as an indication of wear and judging by yours I would say the gun has good honest wear but is in very good condition and doesn't appear to be abused. Definitely a keeper in my estimation.

I didn't realize that we knew what year various buttplates were first used. Can you give us a reference for that information? By the way, I think the buttplate on the pictured gun is usually used on a #2 frame gun. Am I correct about that?

Bill, for info., I have the same buttplate on a 6 frame, hammer 8 gauge. Considerably more worn, however.

You're right Bill, I don't think we do know exactly when a particular style of dog's head buttplate was introduced. The one on the GH that is shown here is the same as the one shown on top left of pg. 103 ot The Parker Story and the serial number of the TPS gun is 108998 which is, of course a 1902 gun. This however, does not set a time-line for the introduction of that particular buttplate and we should be careful not to make such generalizations as were posted.

Bill, that buttplate was used on everything from #2 frames to #7 frames but I've never seen one on a #1 frame gun. However, that particular gun may have been equipped with a #2 stock.

Ok guys sorry I looked back at the book and it doesn't say it was started in 1902 just that it was on a 1902 gun my bad. didn't mean to get the hairs up on anybody!
