choke constriction
 

I recently acquired an AH Fox 410 by CSM and miked the chokes at .022 & .023. I have no chart to determine if these equate to full, mod etc. If anyone here knows I'd appreciate the info.

Full=.390, ImpMod=.395, Mod=.400, Imp cyl=.405, Cyl=.410.

Rich, Colonial Arms' chart shows .11 as imp. mod.,.015 full and.021 X full. Looks like yours are OMG!

How does it pattern in what diameter circle and at what distances??? That should be a better indicator of effective choke.

Your chokes are very full. Parker 28 gauge full is .020. In a .410, .023 is over the top.

I haven't patterned it but based on what it will do to a target even using the std AA 2 1/2 skeet load I figgured it was very tight. I think these will see a trip to the gunsmith and get opened up considerably.

Don't go too far... you may regret it.

Please tell us a little more about the gun.

John the gun is a recent production (2000) from CSM. It's a Fox FE with straight stock, splinter forarm, double triggers and 28 inch barrels. It has a fairly nice piece of wood and a great checkering pattern. I've included a couple of pictures for you.

Thanks Russ. She's tight in the choke for sure. I have a friend with a VHE 410 thats skt/skt does anyone know what that constriction is?

Best way to find any choke is to shoot the gun, but I use this choke chart for basic constriction info.

Rich ,If she were mine and I decided to open the chokes ,I would consider just the right barrel and leave the left Full . You are like myself in the fact that the vast majority of Birds hunted and shot are over a Pointing Dog which allows for much closer shooting than the foot hunter without a Dog ! Any way ,just an opinion ,I don't have a Gauge for measuring bore dimension ,but on my Brass Galazan Gauge ,my Parker 410 is choked ,Right / I.C. and L / Mod. ,I shot many Woodcock with it last season and had no problems killing pointed Pheasants " Stone Dead " ! IC & M would be fine but what is that constriction? .022 & .023 are full and fuller and that just isn't going to work for what I bought this for. Galazan wants $500 to open the chokes:shock::eek:

how about the place in Penn. he does alot for trap shooters and sporting clays shooters. i think his name is john alum. the place is believe is alums gun craft.

I have a smith right here who is opening the chokes on a 20ga project from M&F to skt/skt. I'll see how these come out and if it works out then he can do the Fox. There is a gentalman from MA who did some choke work for me but i can't remember his name but I'm sure I still have the shipping carton. He was fast and reasonable.

Abe Chaber opened a little gun for me a couple of months ago and he did it from the breech... the correct way to do choke work. And he is a whole lot less than $500 and so is Mike Orlen!!

$500 to open chokes is absolutely absurd.

You know what they say... "If you don't want the job simply price yourself out of the market."
I don't think CSMC wants that kind of work... or at least their price reflects that.

In Mike Orlen's price brochure I have, it is $35 to adjust to more open choke.

Is that $35 per tube Frank?

It is not really clear on the sheet. I was wondering the same thing. I do remember I sent a set of barrels to open both tubes and to raise a dent. Total cost was $100 - $125 dollars or so. Turnaround was quick - I sent on Monday and got them back on Wednesday. Living in the same state for shipping sure helps!

When Mike did my 16ga the cost was per tube.

Galazan told me they sent these guns to dealers without them ever being choked so the customer could have them set at what they wanted. I wonder if they would have charged the original owner $500 to open the chokes?

For what its worth, the .410 requires a reasonable amount of choke to deliver patterns that are dense enough to get the job done. That's true for real or clay targets.
In my youth, i shot a lot of skeet with a .410 with Chokes of .006 and .008. that combination really smoked targets at Skeet distances. If you plan on using the gun for Sporting Clays or real birds, I'd be inclined toward a Modified (.008), Improved Modified (.011) combination. If you end up not liking that combination after using it for a while, you still have enough left to open them some more, if you'd like.

Rich, I am having my Fox openned up to by a guy here in MI, he is considered one of the best, works on compitition guns forgot his name, Terry Aller something like that, Terry Epley has his contact info, chargers $75 a tube. Tony G does not want the business at that price....!
