For those who are interested in Parker engraving here are some photos of C grade guns.

I (of course) especially like the setter on the second gun. But nice selection.

Thanks

Craig Larter 05-29-2012 03:43 PM

Thanks for posting the pictures, I enjoyed them very much. My one and only Parker a C has the five ducks on the trigger plate. I really like the gun with the mallard in flight------tell me about that gun. Thanks Craig

Thanks for the pics Bruce.

In looking at the deep relief pheasant it almost looks as if the engraver took a floor plate with a more standard engraving scene and decided to cut the left side in a deeper style. This is the first time I’ve seen anything quite like that.

Thanks for sharing these Bruce. It is nice to be able to see a side-by-side comparison of all the variations of engraving on C grades.

Larry, that's the uncommon deep cut Germanic engraving. Here's another:

I'm with you Russ; I would love to see everyone’s C grade floor plate pics posted here. Here is a 32" strait grip gun that I'm sure some have seen but others may have not.

Russ Jackson 05-30-2012 11:27 AM

No Russ, just a couple of mutts.

Obviously there are C-grades and then there are C-grades. What a difference in engraving styles and quality! It's very enlightening to this beginner to see a variety of C's in order to understand this variation. Thanks for sharing all the photos!

Larry Frey 05-30-2012 02:22 PM

John you are correct, there is a lot of variety amongst the C grades. For those who were able to attend last years Annual Meeting the theme was C grade guns. We were treated to an informative discussion about the grade by Mr. Day who was backed up by a large (10' appx.) screen video display running in the background. On top of that we had 20+ C grade guns from 410 thru 8 gage and all were wonderful examples.

Larry showed the C that has the topknot quail. Those are Gambel's quail native to the far west, sometimes known as California quail. I know of three Parkers with Gambel's quail. Certainly rare in Parker engraving. Also rare are the C grade rondell side plate engraving produced from 1900 to 1905 on a minor percentage of the C's . I've also seen it on one D and one B. I think it can be attributed to one engraver but I don't know whom.

I had a question the other day about what is a rondell. I coined the term as applied to Parker round side panel engraving about 7-8 years ago after noticing it and learning that no one had been mentioning it. It reminded me of the rondell insignia on British air force ( RAF) aircraft. I think the use of the term has caught on, but if anyone has a better descriptor, have at it.

Craig Larter 05-30-2012 06:50 PM

Bruce: Very nice rondell C, I have a good friend with one that has been to Turnbull's. Boy it would be fun to make a Parker collection out of just C grades, all just a little different.

This is the same C pictured earlier by me ,not quite Rondell engraved but just a little later I believe ! Russ

Dean Romig 05-31-2012 06:47 AM

What is the year of manufacture of that one Russ?

Will you be at Hausmann's this time??

Russ Jackson 05-31-2012 09:16 AM

Good Morning Dean ,This C,is early 1904 ! Sad to say ,I won't be making it again this year ,was the original plan if you might recall our conversation months back ,but Nieces Wedding on Sat. and Wedding Brunch on Sunday will prevent it ! I just yesterday got an invite Via E Mail to participate in the Ruffed Grouse Society Shoot here in Pa. in August ,I am contemplating that just to get my feet wet since I have never shot any of the Shooting Games ! Any of you Parker Guys doing that shoot ? Russ

Harold Lee Pickens 05-31-2012 10:02 AM

My vote is for the setters engraving. Brush Buster, where is the RGS shoot in August? Ihave been the chapter chairman for our local RGS for the last 27 years. I live about 5 miles from the Pa.line and generally shoot in Claysville, Pa,Washington County@ Split Rail.

Russ Jackson 05-31-2012 11:25 AM

Harold ,I am going to try to post a link , I figured it out once before ,lets see how the old Memory is working this morning !!http://www.ruffedgrousesociety.org/U...tonPAShoot.pdf , Now if it works ????????????:)
