Well headed out to a local antique auction Saturday ,where there was a Parker Brothers ,Grade 6 advertised ! At first ,I was a little disappointed to find what I did and then I thought ,Hey there's nothing to be disappointed with in this gun ! It is a very late Remington era 16 Ga. Built on a # 1 Frame with some unique stamping and the , Parker / Ilion New York Grip Cap ! Appears to be all original with a few handing marks and patina ! I happened to be the final bid ,thought I would share some pics. with you fellows ! Hope you enjoy them ! Best ; Russ

Looks very nice Russ. Good find
|
Congratulationd Russ, A wonderful late Remington gun. Between you and Angel with these 16 gauges you're killin me...:)
|
Has anyone seen the " Heart Stamp " before on the Barrel Flat , and what does it mean ? Russ
|
Russ, Check out page 582 in TPS. We are not sure of the meaning of these symbols. I have seen the sunburst symbol of a few late guns but never the heart symbol. Interesting....
|
very nice - did it come in that case?
|
Hello Rick ,Thank you ,Yes it was in the case and the case doesn't appear to have any special markings to relate it with Remington ,but I haven't really given it a good looking over or cleaning just yet ! Dave S ,I thought the Heart was unique also !
|
see you found us a good quail gun....now if we can find the quail we will be in business...great lookin gun.... charlie
|
Thank you Charlie , I didn't post the picture but it is stamped IC and Full ,so she would make a fine Quail gun ,just don't know if the Quail would cooperate !
|
Beutigul find Russ. Congrats and put me on the list. I would love to own that GH, tell me she's got 30" bbls.
|
Wonderful acquisition, Russ. Enjoy!
|
Russ: Great find, small local auctions are a great place to find SxS's. Craig
|
What a wonderful find! I think I would like that choke combimnation as I have several similar to that. The VH 28 gauge is cylinder and full and I would be hard pressed to let it go. A GH 12 on a #1 frame just under 7 lbs is choker .005 & .027 and is death itself.

Harry ,I hunt mostly with Pointing Dogs ,and I love the open choke in the Right Barrel and Full in the Left also ! Seems to be a Great Combination ! Russ
|
guns choked improved cly...and full are hard to come by in my neck of the woods... most quail or bird guns as they were called were ordered with pretty much open chokes in miss...ive always wanted a gun with cly or imp. cly and full...but they aint to be had around here.... i new and old turkey hunter of years past that sweared by his imp. cly and full choke 12 ga ...hed use no 7 1/2 s in the open barrel for them head shots and a load of 4 s in the full for them 35 yard shots.......im gonna on one of them kinda choked guns someday... charlie

Way to go Russ. I got to hang around with you on the weekends. Beautiful little gun.

When we first began to see bumper stickers and window stickers back in the '70's of such things as "I *heart* My Labrador Retriever" or "I *heart* My Grandkids" or "I *heart* My Volvo" and so on and so on... we thought they were clever and novel but soon got sick of seeing them. Littel did we know that Parker (under ownership of Remington) actually started that fad with that little heart which, of course meant, "I Love My Parker". |
Dean ,I knew some one would know ,and it doesn't suprise me who it was !!!!!!!!!!!
|
Nice gun Russ and congrats on finding it. Seems some 16's are coming to light these days. I'm going to debut a transition DHE 16 at the Southern this weekend:). I think it's choked M/F, the clays will tell me.
|
Thank you Rich ,We all know a lot of the fun is in the Hunt ,I really get a kick out of locating a Parker ,This particular gun was found by a phone call from a friend who said his Father went to preview an antique auction and said ,Man you ought to see the gun there ,some kind of highly engraved Parker ! It was the only gun there ! It was about 60 Miles from me ,but I made a Bee Line the day before to the preview and decided to go on Saturday to the auction and see what happened ,I am glad I did ! Now ,how about a few pictures of the transition gun ,I would like to take a look at her and I am going to miss the Southern !:corn:
|
I'll post some pics when I get back. I'm looking forward to picking up a Fox 410 while I'm there :)
|
Sounds Great Rich ,I am sure we will all look forward to seeing both !

Anyone looking for Quail might try Kansas.....we got into several covies this past november....It was so mutch fun....I remember the wild quail in ohio about 1963 we had several large covies that lived in a huge field across the street from my house. The problem, I only could carry a sling shot...I was 8.....But I remember them. They were all gone by the time I got my first SXS 12ga. from my dad at 13. The hi brass hunting ammo was so charished and never wasted! I think I still have some of that ammo! Thanks all SXS ohio....(-:

Kenny ,Thanks for the advice , My dad tells of the Deep Freeze here in the early Forties which did our Quail in ! Seems my Grand Dad had a small Farm here in SW Pa. where a few nice Coveys lived ,as my Grand Dad called them I am told " My Coveys " which he watched very closely I've been told ! The story is a Deep snow came and then melted a little and then the Deep Freeze that lasted for a long period of time ,the next Spring ,there were no Quail to be found ,so you can imagine my suprise about eight years ago or so when Maggie Set Point at the end of a ravine that dropped out of a Crab Apple patch at the edge of the lower Field ,I went in to Flush expecting Mr. Ruff and jumped a Covey of about Forty Quail ,Well the Good Lord was smiling on me that day ,the first Covey rise I had ever seen and managed to scratch down Two for an honest Double ," Two Dead in the Air " with my 16 Ga. Trojan and some good Spreader Loads ! Hence my Doubles Pin from the PGCA ! Russ

Here's an inset of Russ's pic showing the stamping. Thank you Russ. . |
Frank, the meaning of the heart stamp, along with several other Remington stamps such as the sunburst stamp have yet to be uncovered, to the best of my knowledge.
It’s too bad that so much of the Remington Parker information has been lost to time. Remington just didn’t seem to think any of it would ever be of interest… shame on them for not having the vision to record ALL of it. But in Remington’s defense, there was a war going on and so went their focus. . |
I just looked at my late Remington 1/2 frame and vhe 410, they both have the heart and star stamp on the barrels.

The heart and the sunburst are a couple of the most common Remington era inspector's (?) marks. Russ's gun has an XH date code -- X = December H = 1939. My 16-gauge 1-frame has an XJ date code -- X = December J = 1940 (edited) -- and it has the heart and sunburst marks.
Attachment 128056 There are a lot of other marks I've recorded as well -- Attachment 128057 Attachment 128058 Attachment 128059 Attachment 128060 Attachment 128061 Attachment 128062 Attachment 128063 There are more, but not sure how many pictures I can attach. |
One more thing, I've recorded the Ilion grip caps on 1-frame and larger, but I've yet to see anything but Meriden grip caps on 0-frames and smaller.

My grandson, Cam's, VH 20 gauge on the 0-frame, No. 228145 was sent to Remington to be refurbished in the 1960's and got a new butt stock and grip cap then.
Anyway, I presume they did not send it off to DelGrego to do the work. The whole thing was facilitated by Orvis in Manchester, VT. . |
I mistyped in my post. The XJ on my 16-gauge should be X = December J = 1940. The date code with no number after it I take as the production date for the barrels. With a number, usually 3, after it is a repair code.

Hmmm… more cause for confusion…
J could be either 1940 or 1962… Thoughts on this?? . |

Without the 3 suffix Frank, those are dates of manufacture of the gun. . |
Thank you Dean and Dave for your replies. The gun I saw with the heart stamp also had a sunburst stamp, but didn’t have a suffix with the date code. Thus I’m assuming the date code indicates completion of the gun or barrels.
