O Frame Barrel Weight?

I was wondering what the heaviest un-struck weight barrels anyone has encountered on a 0 frame 20ga?

Dave Purnell 03-20-2012 10:09 PM

The un-struck weight of my 28" PHE20 is 3lb-1oz.

CHE ,20 Ga. , 26" Barrels ,3Lb. 1 Oz., 1937 , Remington Era Gun . Russ

Bill Murphy 03-21-2012 08:37 AM

A-1 Special, 32" 20 gauge, 3-7. I guess 32" barrels are not really a fair comparison.

Bill ,I would like to get a look at that Gun !!!!!

Bill Murphy 03-21-2012 08:50 AM

So would I. I have had the barrels for years but have never seen the gun. I talked to the guns "caretaker" on the phone once. He was not interested in buying barrels or selling his gun. The barrels have had a nice life on a nice little GHE Damascus 16, but they don't get out much. Kevin McCormack once suggested that I contract with him to build an oak and leather trunk case for the forend.

Robert Delk 03-21-2012 09:02 AM

Why would anyone not want the original barrels for an A1 if they owned the gun? Talk about value added...

Bruce Day 03-21-2012 09:07 AM

How much were you asking for the barrels, Bill?

Frank Allegra 03-21-2012 09:13 AM

Bill, 32" barrels are a fair comparison as long as they were for a 0 frame. I know that there are a few heavy weights on 1 frame (Widgeon duck guns) but I'm just interested in 0 frame.

Josh Loewensteiner 03-21-2012 09:32 AM

Frank- congrats on becoming a PGCA member.

3-8 for each set of this 0 frame, 20ga, 2 barrel set (28" and 32"). The 28"s were finished an ounce or so heavier than the 32"s and both balance at the pin.

Bill Murphy 03-21-2012 11:32 AM

Bruce, no price was discussed. I wanted the barrels back with the gun.

Frank Allegra 03-21-2012 01:06 PM

I have encountered a set of 20 ga, 0 frame barrels that have chambers measuring 2 3/4" (1910). The wall thickness at the muzzles is .0056 (right) and .0062 (left). Were these "magnum" barrels and actually meant for the 2 7/8 shells?

Mark Landskov 03-22-2012 05:11 AM

My 1929 Trojan 20 gauge barrels, at 28 inches, show a weight of '3-3'.

charlie cleveland 03-22-2012 12:47 PM

my old 20 o frame marked 2 lb 14 ounce ive weighed them in the finished state as they are now at 2 lbs 8 ounce.... 26 inch in lenth factory lentgth..... charlie

Frank Allegra 03-22-2012 05:02 PM

Thanks to all for posting your findings. I was finally able to get a photo of the barrel flats. What do you think? They are the heaviest I have ever seen. Anyone seen barrels more heavy than 4lb 3oz?

charlie cleveland 03-22-2012 09:35 PM

not me... charlie

Frank Allegra 03-31-2012 10:02 AM

I recently received a PM from a member that posted a photo of his 4 lb 4 oz barrels. What do you Gents think?

Still searching for the answer. What are the heaviest barrels known or recorded for the 0 frame 20ga?

charlie cleveland 03-31-2012 09:52 PM

thats one long gun barrel frank....is it a shotgun that you know i hope so...long gun barrels have beenof high interest to me since a way back...im guessing them at 48 inches and i want miss it much...longest set ive seen on a double are 36inches but theres some parker boys with 38 s and 40 inches...longest breach loader barrel ive seen is a 48 inch long tom up in corinth miss... fella said he d sale it to me when he found one with loger barrels...i forgot ive got a old single barrel with a 40 inch barrel....thanks for the photo... charlie

Dean Romig 03-31-2012 10:18 PM

I'd say those barrels are closer to sixty inches if the man in the picture is at least 5' 6" tall.

Hi Charlie ,Not a Double but long Barreled !:rotf:

Frank Allegra 03-31-2012 10:44 PM

Charlie, to answer your question about being a shotgun that I know...the answer is No. I do know that it is a shotgun and it's a 4ga. Barrel length unknown to me. I think Dean has a good estimation of length.

charlie cleveland 04-01-2012 09:52 AM

russ what ga is this gun your showing and barrel length and whats the purpose of the scope... frank thats one mean looking gun and in a 4 ga makes it better...boy would i like to own a cannon like this one... charlie

Russ Jackson 04-01-2012 10:14 AM

Good Morning Charlie , The picture is of a Model 37 Winchester ,12 Ga. with a 40" Barrel ,The gun doesn't wear a scope anymore and has been refinished ,what the reasoning for the scope is ???? I have no idea ! I had picked this up at an auction years ago and when I got her home I stood it there and took a couple of pictures of it ,it had the scope on her when I bought it ! The other part of the story is ,I still have no Idea why I Bought it ! ! Just thought it was kind of neat ! :rotf: Russ

i have a VHE 30 in. at 3 lbs 5 oz

Don Kaas 04-08-2012 08:18 AM

I have DHE 20g #168,854 30" T3 0 frame marked 3/9. Russ Bickel had a set of 0 frame Acme A grade 32" barrels now fitted to a late GHE 20g that were marked 3/11 if I recall correctly. By contrast, I have a #2 frame DH 20g with 32" D3 barrels marked 5/5...

Frank Allegra 04-08-2012 09:10 AM

Don,
Although not on a 0 frame, That 5-5 #2 frame 20ga sounds interesting.
Do you know the original chamber length of your gun?

Don Kaas 04-08-2012 09:25 AM

The gun was shipped to Louisiana in 1919 as a 12 gauge D3. Sometime after that it acquired the heavy 20 gauge barrels. It is a straight grip with a skeleton butt and weighs 8 lbs. Unfortunately, this is after the factory records record such work.:crying: The barrels have 2 7/8" chambers and are choked .029/.029.

Dave Suponski 04-08-2012 09:55 AM

The 30" barrels on my VH 20 gauge weigh 3lbs. 7 ozs.

Daryl Corona 04-08-2012 12:25 PM

VH, 30", O frame, 3lb 9oz.

Angel Cruz 04-08-2012 12:45 PM

My 20ga Trojan 30 inch bbls are stamped 3lbs 4oz and actual weight is 2lbs .84 oz.

Bill Murphy 04-08-2012 01:56 PM

Angel, you're just trying to make us bottom feeders jealous. 30" 20 gauge Trojan, inddeed.

Angel Cruz 04-08-2012 02:08 PM
