Ya'll know how I hate to brag about my dogs

but I know many of you have a keen interest in them and I try to keep you informed of their exploits. :)

I entered my French Brittany Red in the NSTRA open trial in El Reno, Oklahoma this past weekend. It is actually four trials, two Saturday and two Sunday. He placed 1st in one trial Saturday, 2nd in the other, and 3rd in one trial Sunday. This qualifies him as a NSTRA Champion.

I also ran Molly and Belle but they had no luck.

My trial gun is a Parker VH12. My shooting student Craig Parker came over from Watonga and watched the trial and took these pictures with his phone (edit Tarena Wohl took the last picture - I am the Brad Pitt double on the left):

Thomas L. Benson Sr. 02-27-2012 07:37 PM

Mike: Great job it takes alot of work and skill and you should be proud of what you and your dogs accomplished. Thomas

Congrats. I used to have a Brittany. Great dogs. I thought Joe Wood was your shooting student. Did he graduate?

Mike Shepherd 02-27-2012 08:11 PM

Thanks all!

Most of the skill was in the last three hundred years of dog breeders. The dog came with all he needed built in. I just learned how to run him.

Ed, Joe Wood is still my shooting student. Craig is a new shooting student. I have many including Chuck Heald, Chuck Kribs, Daryl Halquist, Mike Lowery, etc...

Best,

Mike

Mike ,Great work and something to brag about ! I have only ever tried one Trial it was a Puppy get together ,Ended up placing 2'nd ,No big deal like this but loads of fun ! Congratulations ! Beautiful Dog ,how does it compare to working with The Brittany Spaniel , as you probably know ,the Britt is my dog Type also ! Russ

Mike Shepherd 02-27-2012 09:05 PM

Thanks Russ.

Well my dogs are registered in the AKC as Brittany Gun Dogs (American Brittanys) and in the UKC as French Brittany Spaniels or Espagnuel Britain (SP?)

They aren't quite as leggy as the American Britts. I have never had an American Brit. The French Brittany is what the American Brittany came from. Mine are usually natural retrievers, avid hunters of dead and wounded birds, laid back in the house and energetic in the field. The French Brittanys inlcude black and white dogs and dogs with black noses.

NSTRA is amatuer. There is no prize money or puppy stakes. No paid handlers. Naturally it is not as competitive as the big money horseback trials. More like the American Trap Assocation and less like the Pro Golfer's Association

Best,

Mike

Congratulations and thanks for the pictures. I was given a 7 mo. old brittany, legal name "Trigger Trouble". My wife calls him "Trigger or Trig". I have many names for him.
Most, like my wife's Trig, contain words with only four letters. But besides being "birdy" retrieving is HIS game. If I leave my boots, Kindlin wood, small tools etc. laying around then I'm retrieving. I have had to sneak behind him on and off for two days to find my left Muck boot so I could retrieve it. He is getting his PHD at Shady Grove Kennels & Preserve
in Remmington VA. He has been there six days. We hope he is going well.....I have lost my phone.

Larry ,You have made my day ,I can't quit Chuckling ! My old Britt , Maggie loved to Retrieve also but only while hunting with another Dog and then she would race like a thief to the Bird ,Grab it and run off with it ! If we were alone ,she would go to the Bird but wouldn't dream of picking it up ! She also loved to dash out as fast as she could go and Fetch every Woodcock I ever shot and immediately proceed to bury it !!!!!!!!!!: :banghead: Dogs , Who Knows ??? :rotf:

As a fellow Brit owner........

OUTSTANDING!! In my line of work, folks keep bragging about their GSPs, Springers, you name it... I listen attentively and smile a lot....

I love my Brits who are next to me on the couch as I type this...

Best to you!

John

John we have six French Brittanys living with us in the house, 8 years, 5 years, 4 years, 4 years, 20 months, 4 months. Great companions.

When I was a kid we would go to Arkansas to visit my Grandparents. My Dad would take us squirrel hunting and then Grandma would make squirrel and dumplings and fried pies. We didn't have squirrel dogs but Dad and his brothers were pretty good without them.

Best,

Mike

If a man can't brag about his dogs then he's pretty lame in my opinion. Most dogs are better than most people.

Congratulations on an enriched life!
