My two 10's !
At the moment I only own a pair of short 10's !
The W&C Scott I inherited from my maternal grandfather and the Ithaca my father bought about 32 years ago . I have had the Ithaca MAG 10's in Field and DeLuxe grades as well as a Remington SP-10 the year they came out and a Browning BPS . The 3 1/2" guns are nice enough but I like's my old side by's a hell of alot better ! Was at the club today testing some cast bullet loads in a couple lever guns and waiting for some friends to arrive to shoot trap and skeet . But as luck would have it , it was spitting rain/snow a bit so my "friends" chickened out ! So I decided to shoot the Ithaca at my target frame at 50 yards with my 1 1/4 ounce #8 loads . Bear in mind this is THE FIRST time this gun has been fired since we purchased it 30+ years ago . Anyway the pattern was very nice and dense at 50 yards with #8's so I think certainly I'll need to shoot a few rounds of trap with the old gun . But perhaps the next time I go to the rifle range I'll need to pattern my 00 Buck loads at 25 and 50 yards in the old Ithaca to see what I have or don't have ! Here's a couple pics of the old Ithaca at the range . http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f3...ugeguns001.jpg http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f3...ugeguns002.jpg http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f3...ugeguns004.jpg http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f3...ugeguns003.jpg When we got the old gun she had been used fairly hard . So my father took it to a gentleman in Esmont Virginia to be rust blued as well as have the stock redone and remove the decaying pad and replaced it with ugh a Pachmeyer White Line ! |
Figured while I was at the picture taking I'd snap a couple of my grandfathers old WC !
He added the Pachmeyer pad after he got the old gun back in the 50's I believe ! This has been my dove gun ever since my grandfather passed in 2007 . And it's the ONLY gun I've ever potted a deer using buckshot . http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f3...ugeguns005.jpg http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f3...ugeguns006.jpg http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f3...ugeguns007.jpg http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f3...ugeguns008.jpg http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f3...ugeguns009.jpg http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f3...ugeguns010.jpg |
Of those two old boys the WC is by far the better handling of the two atleast for me .
Thats also sort of the reason I'd like to add a Parker hammerless short Ten to my accumulation as well ! But lately I'm thinking a lighter Parker "bird gun" short 10 as well as a heavier framed Parker "duck gun" short 10 might be the way to go in the upcoming years  What can I say , I like to have several choices at everything :rotf: |

Very nice i really enjoy looking at those old 10 ga
|
craig those are really 2 nice guns....it would be hard for me to choose between these 2 guns....i like your idea about having a lite ten and a heavy ten parker... bill murphy has one of the lighest 10 ga ive heard ofanda couplea of the guys have 5 frame ten ga parkers...i think mr bensons guns barrels alone weigh close to ten pounds... yep tens are way cool big or little....im working up a buckshot load now for the 10 ga....keep shooting and testing and keep us posted..... charlie
|
Check this one out Charlie. 10 ga. 29" barrels 6 lbs. 8ozs. would like to try out a few of my lite ten loads in this one 1 1/8 oz of 6's would be murder on the crows.

I've shot that WC 500+ times since it was left to me almost 4 years ago . I am quite certain my grandfather never came close to shooting it that much in the 50+ years he owned it .
Tommorrow I'll try and remmember to take a picture of the muzzle's on that Ithaca . Going by the barrel thickness I would be willing to bet mine is choked right darn tight as well ! |

I bought this 1930-vintage NID No. 2 Super-Ten the year the Winchester ammunition catalogue had the symbol next to their only remaining 2 7/8 inch 10-gauge loading, 1 5/8 ounce of #4C, that it was discontinued and was offered subject to stock on hand. I bought all 24 boxes that Potomac Arms had at their end of season ammunition sale. Still have 19 of those boxes!!

Dave, I am shooting my New Old Stock short tens at the rate of about 1% of my inventory each year. I will have Linda ship the remains to you if I get hit by a truck.
|
that new old stock stuff about reached a hundred dollar bill...some of it a lot higher for those pretty boxes...even the peters flying duck has got some what outa my reach and its the most common old box found....but good thing we got the modern 3 1/2 inch around to shorten up and RST ready mades....i dont shoot to much of my new old stock stuff except at turkeys used 3 shells last year..... charlie

Took a friend out to shoot a Ruger Red Label he's owned for 4 or 5 years and never shot !
We first shot two rounds regular skeet ! He did okay for a first try and I used my W&C Scott 10 and got 48 outta 50 . Dropped a low 6 in each round :cuss: We then shot a round of trap . He changed chokes and I took out the Ithaca short 10 . My friend shot better at trap and I shot a 22 with the Ithaca . We shot another round of trap and he used the same gun while I used my Ithaca single barrel trap gun and broke a 24 . Another friend showed up and we decided to shoot Jap Trap . I wanted to shoot the Ithaca 10 some more but it's got just a bit to much drop for me and I deferred to my W&C Scott . We shot a couple rounds of that and all did fairly well ! |
glad yall done that good with the tens...this has always been my favorite gunfor over 50 years now...something magic about them may all be in my head but thats ok.... charlie
|
I am 100% certain every bird I missed on the skeet field and regular trap field was because I wasn't focused on the bird !
Jap Trap is another story ! I like to throw a little extra in the mix . The trap machine we use for this also has the wobble feature in it so not only does it oscillate left and right but also up and down ! That thing can throw some flat dropping birds and darn near a springing Teal . I would say both my W&C and the Ithaca 10 are choked full or fuller in both barrels of both guns . I am quite sure the hard left or right screamers out of the trap machine that I'd sometimes be just a hair slow getting two were easily 40 yards away when I popped them . My old Ithaca single barrel could get very decent in my hands if I shot it enough to become used to it ! But after shooting Krieghoff's for a good many years with all my patterns at 70/30 that old Ithaca that is 50/50 takes a bit to get used to again . I have to mentally remmmember that gun shoots as flat as a pancake :rotf: The old Ithaca short 10 barked my cheek a bit . First time I've had that happen in a number of years . Think I may get a slip on comb thing to raise it a bit before hunting season . Well that is if it patterns my 00 Buck loads worth a darn . Think I'll reload all my 10 gauge hulls this weekend and maybe get some 16's with 7/8 ounce's of shot ready for my Fox AE and shoot that next week . |
THink now I need to also put forth some effort and get set up to reload 2 1/2" 12's and 20's then I can shoot the other two W&C Scotts !
My old 10 W&C shows it's age but the 12 and 20 are easily 95%+ . Last year I had the 12 and 20 W&C at the Baltimore Gunshow with thoughts of liquidating them . And once again I'm glad I never brought them in the building . |
love to see some pictures of the small bore scotts...one thing about having full chokes if you miss with the first barrel you still have a secound chance with the other full barrel..that is if target is going away from you... i dont shoot trap or skeet but thats because all the clubs are50 miles or better away...but ive shot my fair part of pop cans and 30 inch targets...my best shot ever with holes in a aluminum drink can is 13 pellets at 50 yards...no 4 shot in 3 inch 12 ga rem...turkey load in a 10 ga lc smith using those ga reducers.... ive tried all kinda loads at the pop cans from no 8 shot down to bb with the 8 ga down to the 410 at this distance...the no 4 s still hold the record at 50 yards.... this will give you fellas something to shoot at when you dont wanta go to the range...who knows maybe you can beat my record.....ha charlie

I'll see if maybe I can't photgraph the two smaller W&C's . I don't believe I've ever photgraphed them and posted pics on the net ! May be this weekend or next week before that happens . When they start Speed Weeks at Daytone I kinda let most of the other stuff slip to the wayside  |
them old race cars make a lotta people go to the track...i like the round trackers but 1/4 milers are my favorites...i got a old blue tick hound and if you ever go out the door with gun in hand he will go tree a squirl or something within a few minutes...have to tie him up when i go deer hunting forgot a couple times and it want be long till hes found me...usally go to the truck and let him in the cab till im done hunting..... charlie

Put the two Ithaca's back in the safe today after I cleaned them and then pulled the Ed Kettner drilling out . Gonna see if I can get the cartridges going for that one !
I had originally thought I could use 444 Marlin cases but it looks as if they are about .04" to short and I can do a better job with 405 WCF cases and a set of CH4D dies ! Also need to tighten the old gun up just a hair as well . "Cartridges of the World" claims the 10.75x65R Collath shot a 200 grain bullet at modest velocity . I already have a 207 grain 44 cal GC mold . But the book claims this cartridge is .424" so I'll size them in a .429" die and use air cooled wheelweights and it should be fine . That gun with a slug in the rifle barrel and #1 Buck in both shotgun barrels should be pretty decent ! |
sounds like youve got things going well with that drilling...a mans just got to admire the work put into one of these things....the book cartiges of the world is a good book ive looked at it for hours ....get that load worked up it will be piggie season before long.... charlie

That ones a Kerner 16x16-7x57R ! It should be a comparative breeze to load for as I already have 7x57 dies and plenty of bullets . All I need to do is bite the bullet and buy a box or two of the not so cheap Norma brass ! This one however does not have visible hammers  |
ive got a 16x16x57r also its a suhl made gun by griffins also a hammereless gun...its deadly on deer...i watch gunbroker for the 7x57r ammo sometimes a cheap box slips by and i get lucky... these guns are the best.... charlie
|
Well Charlie I was thinking I might miss out on a range trip this coming week being Speed Weeks and all that !
But after getting the shrubbery chopped saturday and getting my rifle loading done an hour or so ago . As long as the weather looks good monday or tuesdat afternoon I should stay in schedule ! From wednesday until the follwing monday I doubt if I'll be much good for shooting anything . And if the 88 car runs very well I am POSITIVE I won't be much good ! If thats the case I might drink more then my self imposed two beers a race LOL's ! |
Oh yeah I almost forgot !
I now have about 110 empty 10 gauge 2 7/8" hulls left over from friday morning . I suppose I should get them redone saturday and sunday morning . After using Ponsness Warren 800 presses for so many years , using a MEC 600JR for the 10 gauge seems slow as heck :banghead: |
coparing them loaders would be like putting a T MODEL in the race with the no 88 car...i only have the 600 junior loaders compared to hand loading there the fastest thing on my bench... gotta go pound on a 57 fender not a 57 primer for a while.... charlie

Very nice! I just bought a Parker EH which I love.

Very nice Mill's !
I missed out on a VH 10 gauge locally about 18 months ago for $1,800 that was about 90% overall and have kicked myself many many times over that one ! Well i say VH as thats what the broker said it was . I just saw pics as we never were in the same place at the same time . A couple friends that are knowledgable in the ways of Parker's and saw this one said it was correct ! At the time I was looking for a decent shootable one and I "thought" I could find one for less money . Little did I know :banghead: |
A V Grade 10 gauge gun is a rare bird. I think I have only seen 1 or 2. Years ago I had one shipped here for a friend. The gun was bought from Elmira Arms. Great guns....
|
I think it was said on this forum: Just be patient and the Parker you are looking for will come available eventually.
|

But once I get a 10 I'll want an 8 and if and when one of those becomes available that may be a "to expensive" undertaking ! |
I was going to add you can buy all the Parkers that look interesting while you wait on the one you are looking for. I want an 8 gauge eventually too.

That is just part of the challenge.

When you take into consideration I'm pretty open to most any decent SxS as well as a couple different brands of O/U's . Then my "stupid" obsession with Marlin lever actions , Ruger #1's , variouse bolt actions and then there's all the bullet molds  Period flintlock and percussion weapons also empty my pockets on a fairly regular basis  Just glad I finally got over the "Contemporary Flintlock Longrifles" what I had in a couple of those a year or two ago and I could've purchased a nice 8 gauge Parker hammerless ! It's a never ending cycle :rotf: |
Craig,
Interesting, before discovering Parker Bros. shotguns I too accumulated a few "Contemporary Flintlock Longrifles", but before the CLA came into being. Two by Haugh, two by H. House and one each by Bivins, Ehinger, Brennan, Dawson and Viens. Still have, shoot and enjoy them all. If I may ask, whose work did you collect? |
