Damascus barrels with dents

I am looking at possibly acquiring a DH 12 gauge with Damascus barrels. The ad says it has dents in the barrels, some of which you can see when looking inside the barrels. My good sense says barrel dents and Damascus barrels are a bad combination. The Parker addict in me says here is a DH at an otherwise reasonable price and maybe a good gunsmith could fix the dents and make it safe to shoot at a not too ruinous price. Thoughts and advice appreciated

I think it also states 27 1/2 barrels if its the one I am thinking of

Mills Morrison 02-05-2012 07:34 PM

That is the one.

Mills I thought again and edited my post, sorry about that I had my head up my you know what

No problem. I will not be offended if you buy it.

Mills, it shouldn't be a problem to raise the dents, I think I paid 50 bucks to remove last year.

I would want a barrel wall thickness measurement .

That is a good idea.

Mills:
You are actually in a better position for dent removal with Damascus barrels. They tend to reform better/more easily in the process than fluid steel. Any good double 'smith should be able to handle the job. Emphasis on "good."

Best, Kensal

Thanks Kensal.

Mills
How is this going ?

Mills Morrison 02-10-2012 08:20 AM

The DH sold pretty quickly, but I found another one I like. The posts here have been very helpful. With all the old wives tales on Damascus, the fact that they have some advantages over modern barrels gets lost in the shuffle.
