An early lifter....

John, I was very pleasantly surprised last evening while perusing some old issues of DGJ and found that wonderful article by William W. Headrick beginning on page 84 of the Autumn 2000 issue. Headrick is probably the preeminent gun photographer today and his work has appeared in DGJ from the beginning. He does your Great-Grandfather George L. Osborn's Parker justice, don't you think? And to think, I've had the great honor and pleasure of shooting that gun... and my first impression when I hefted it was, Gee-rifus Ev, she don't weigh nuthin'!

So in the hammerless guns, we saw what Parker called straight hand, pistol grip and half pistol grip. In the hammers, we saw straight hand, pistol grip and ball grip. And then there is the Osborne/Dunkle gun with the finger waved pistol grip, I'm not sure what the correct term for that is. There are a few early hammerless with true ball grips, and one is shown above. What some people call ball grips have no increased radius and are what Parker called half pistol grips.
Other people views on what is correct Parker terminology is always appreciated.

It's a family Parker that was originally ordered by my great-grandfather. As the first double vent-rib, it has a whole lot of meaning and family history - and Parker history - which DGJ left out in their article (which Dean alluded to in his post).

A long personal story there - but, when I have a chance to catch-up a bit, I'll try to post again with more information and pictures of that very unique Parker.

In the interest of getting a grip, and in the interest of Parker appreciation, returning this thread to the top.

And an early top action hammer light 16 ( bottom gun) with frame grooves in Grade 2 and no checkering on the stock or forend. Never had any. Damascus barrels. This gun was purchased new in Salt Lake City by a Mormon pioneer family and taken north to a new settlement in British Columbia. Been in the family since sale to me. Still unaltered and unmessed with. These guns are so often intertwined with the story of America, aren't they?

It will be in the field for prairie grouse next fall.

Thanks for bringing this thread back Bruce. My last purchase was a hammer gun with the checkered ball grip. The talent it took to checker the ball grip is incredible.

A very unique checkering style ,CHE 20 Ga. ,Stock is original to the gun ,not sure about the checking ,this guns been looked at by many knowledgeable Parker Folks and the concensus is the stock is the one it left the Factory with ! I hope Bruce you were looking for others to post some grips also ,if not ,I apologize for sticking this in here ,I figured most would find it neat ! Russ

Parker's are all about details. They were costly then and costly now and the stock details are part of the reason.
