The Parkers are wiped down and will take a brief rest as the Michigan firearms Deer season begins on Tuesday.

I have as big a case of Rifleitus as I do Parkeritus. I like em all but favor Pre 64 Winchester M70's. As Deer season looms on the horizon I'll take a couple more to the range tomorrow just in case they need to come off the bench and hit the field. My favorite is a FWT 358 with a 225gr Sierria in thick cover it's a stopper. The 270 and a 300 H&H will be backup to a Std grade 257 Roberts and two custom built rifles a 257 AI built on a pre 64 action and a 7X57AI built on a Sako action.

I think a different gun every couple of days keeps things interesting. Life's to short to hunt with just one gun....but thats just me and I am a few degrees off plumb when it comes to fine firearms:rotf:

The Mauser 7x57 is my all time favorite.I have a old Ruger 77 full stock
with a 2x7 Austrian scope that has laid many a big buck low and hogs and Fallow deer and just about everything else that walks or runs in Texas.

im not putting the parker s away im taking the old shotgun with punkin ball load along with some sort of rifle usally a 270 or a 7 x 57 r drilling... getem at 30 yards with the parker anduse the rifle anything farther out.... i too hunt with several differant rifles during deer season but it cost me a deer ever once in awhile hunting with differant guns... couuld not find the safety on a sks rifle one day cost me a least a shot on a nice 6 point... does this ever happen to you using different rifles.... charlie

If there's a better calibre than the 7 X 57 Mauser I'd like to know what it is.

Good luck Richard and hope you get something with that nice .358 Winchester. I never heard of the .358 until an old friend showed me his Browning BLR (steel frame) with an empty box of Winchester 200 grain Silvertips . He hasn't shot it for years because he can't find ammo for it. So I bought some Lee dies for .358 and used his shell casings. He was thrilled when I brought him over his old box plus some extra cases I bought and reloaded for him.

I've shot the BLR dialing in the scope and what a nice round and gun. It printed some nice groups and the recoil really wasn't as bad I thought it would be compared to my 30-06. I have the new Super grade Model 70 with the pre-'64 style controlled-round feed and new designed trigger action.

This round has a cult following and seems to be gaining some popularity.

I have in the past looked for one but since reading your post I've searched again the auction sites for .358 Winchester model 70 pre '64.

Pre 64 300 H&H gets my vote. Just nalstagic (good luck with that word!) ch I think it started all belted mags?

I have hunted with a .358 Win Mag for years and have always used the following as a real STOPPER !!!

Federal Premiums with 250gr Nosler boat tail ----expensive ,but effective .

l'll be taking one of my Ruger #1's into camp - either 25.06 or 30.06. Also will be introducing my grandson (the same one who shot his first ducks this fall) to deer hunting. He'll be shooting a left handed Ruger M77 in .270.

I had the 358 out one day and a very nice buck was chaseing a doe but as he was over my self imposed 200yd max with that rifle I just had to enjoy watching him. He was probably a solid 300 yards out but if I had the Weatherby 257 he migh have rested in the freezer. It was a dead calm morning and I had a solid rest. Not an easy shot but not overly difficult either.

It's off to the range with the 270 and 300 H&H....maybe I'll take the 264 Win Mag as well:whistle:

Whatever rifle you choose, I hope you don't drop a buck with Bovine TB. That's one reason why I quit hunting in MI.

There are areas that are designated as CWD (Cronic Wasting Disease) but I'm nowhere near them. I have shot does in the CWD area's with no ill effects and fortunately haven't encountered Bovine TB. Where were you hunting that this was a problem?

I have always liked Sako rifles, I picked up a nifty model 85 last year in .204 it's a little rough on small rodents! Ruger #1 is tough to beat too.

Sako Finbear 30-06 for me.

I know it may be a bit much, but I have been using my 1949 model 70 in .375 H & H. I hunt out of a tower on my farm and have clear shots to about 300 yards on a big circle around me. When you hit them, it is like the were hit by the hand of God. No running, no tracking and no follow up needed. With the 6x Lyman All American, I have yet to miss a shot with it.

Bill I also have a 375 H&H in a pre 64 M70 but have yet to blood it:crying: I have shot deer with a 416 Taylor:eek:, built on an older tang safty Ruger M77. It will drop then no questions and doesn't tear one up as much as a 270.
I have thought of working up a load for the 375 but haven't gotten around to it.

I have included a couple of pics of the two custom guns I'll use this year. The first two are the 257AI the rest are the 7X57AI. This rifle has been to colorado for Mule Deer and to Africa where it took Impala, Bush Pig and of all things great and small a Giraffe. this animal had been caught in a snare and was cut just above the hoof. It was limping badly and you could see the infection with binoculars and the PH made the call to end its suffering. The only reason it wasn't brought down by Hyena or Lion was probably due to it's size.

Note the trap door in the but of the 7X57 the stock is drilled out to hold 3 additional cartridges.

Thanks Charlie, they are both nice guns and have put the meat on the ground. With my sickness they don't get out as much as they should thats why I use so many different ones during our short 15 day season. Last year I shot a nice buck with a Kimber Super America 280, it won't be out again for years. The rotation continues.

I sent an additional $12 along with my application to the NRA in 1955, and recieved an unfired 03A3 in cosmoline. I fit a Scotty Harris stock blank to it, and a Timney trigger a few years later. I passed it on to my son a year ago.

We can't just gloss over a CHE Parker with a set of rifled barrels. Can you tell us a little more about this?

nope we needs some pictures and more info on these rifled barrels please....sure would like to know how accurate at what distance these barrels would be.... charlie

If memory serves me correctly (thats a big IF) there was a PP artical on rifled barrels. It might have been Double Gun Journal also. I know I read about these somewhere.

Sure would be nice to reread whatever article about the rifled CHE. I don't remember whether the records on this gun were ever shared. How about that, James? Is there any documentation on the barrels? An early owner, maybe the original purchaser, was fellow Marylander Dr. Robert Snavely. When I was just a pup, Doc Snavely probably shot the rifled barrels occasionally. However, he was more a Parker collector than one who insisted on shooting his treasures at game. He ran in some pretty fast Parker company. His two closest hunting and shooting companions had a couple of Invincibles in the closet, before much of anyone else had even seen an Invincible. Doc Snavely is the only person I have met face to face whose name is actually posted in a Parker Brothers order book. I found our "home town boy" in an order book when copying the Parker Brothers records at Ilion in 1998.

Twice I have posted on this forum detailed photos of Doc Van's rifled 12ga barrel C with two sets of barrels, complete with rib markings and inscription to C A Winship of Palms, California. The last post was on 12/09/2009. The gun is a rondell engraved C.

There is no evidence that Doctor Snavely, or anyone from Maryland, has anything to do with Doc Van's rifled barrel C. Palms, CA is between Los Angeles and Santa Monica.

bruce has the rifled barrels been fired at targets or game that you know of... i have no info onshotgun rifled barrels in a side by side and espically it being a parker.... charlie

My deer rifles(big deer mind you): Two 1887 vintage .45-90 Winchesters, an 1886 lever gun and an 1885 high wall single shot. I tried to 'fit in' better this year and bought a mint early 80's Win mod 70 xtr in .30-06 and mounted a 3-9x Leupold on it. When it refused to shoot in much better better than 10" at 100 yds after an expenditure of about $150 in bullets, powder, dies, etc, I got the High wall out... with some careful reloading and a 410gr bullet it printed in 1.3" at 100yds and 3.1" at 200 yds.... guess which gun went on the moose hunt and which may be a permanent wall hanger... Now I just need to calibrate the tang sight on the single shot out to at least 300yds. The old guns will get the job done. I put two shots into a caribous heart at 250 paced off yds with the '86 once; the holes were within 1.5" of each other.

Richard I would check the scope rings and bases to make sure they are tight. i had one ring loosen up on a Ruger 416 Taylor and didn't figure it for several rounds. Next check the guard screws in the trigger group and floorplate. If there is a screw in the forarm (I don't recall as its been a long time since I owned a post 64 70) check that as well. to tight is as much a problem as to loose. My longest shot at a Whitetail was with a post 64 M70 in 243. 447 paces across a winter wheat field to a 130 class 9 point. he resides with honor on the wall next to the gun room entrance. Those guns will shoot. I have had a scope go bad once or twice as well.

As has been mentioned the Ruger No. 1 is a wonderful and simple rifle. I bought mine in .270 in 1981 and mounted a Leuopold Vari-X III 1.5 - 5X on it. It is perfect for my purposes and I think the last time I needed to adjust the scope was eight years ago... in fact, I haven't had it to the range in as many years. Once every year I will take one shot with it at about 100 paces just to see if it still prints where I last set it. Sunday morning while in the deep woods I took a (sitting) shot at a knot on the side of a big maple trunk. I knew when I squeezed off that I had pulled a bit to the left. I walked to the tree and sure enough, the bullet hole was exactly 1.25" to the left of the center of the knot and 2 inches high (which is the elevation I set it at eight years ago). Incidentally, earlier Sunday morning it slipped off of the tree trunk I had rested it against while I was occupied at an urgent task and it clattered down on a rock wall. I thought "No big deal, it has taken abuse before." but when I looked it over I discovered that the scope tube was dented. I was then determined to take a shot to see how badly I had knocked it off but as I ststed above... it is fine. What a great little game-getter!!

There's no dust on a Ruger #1 thats for sure. When my Parker project is completed a custom #1 is next...then the wish list will be complete.....except for the 410:whistle:

Mannlicher-Schoenauer Model 1952 rifle in 30-06 with a Leupold VX-III 1.5-5 in a Paul Jaeger side mount. Double set triggers. One sweet rifle.

jap rifle 6.5 converted by some one to .257 roberts then converted by me to 25-06 turned down bolt costom stock with 3 x 9 weaver one long range gun.... charlie

my last few deer have succumed to a 4 3/4 inch Freedom arms 454 Casull....they usually run a little before dropping
but it is very easy to carry and I am a tracker and cover a lot of ground......if a rifle is the item of the day it is a remington 760 carbine with a Redfield 1 x 4....for muzzleloading season it is a TC encore....can't wait for the snow to hit!

Just back from opening day - my Ruger #1 30.06 did its job. Big bodied 7 pointer with a gnarly rack is hanging
