2 1/2 low pressure reloads
 

hi all,

does anyone know of a low pressure 12g 2 1/2" reload recipe or where i could locate some. i have a bunch of RSTs hulls and would like to reload. this is a great site for those like me who are new to relaoding. i tried to track a reference to a sherman bell article for 12g but could not locate it. many thanks, john

some body will come up with old sherman bells recipes....welcome to reloading.... charlie

You just need something for RST hulls - it wouldn't matter if they're 2 or 3" hulls. What wad can be used in RST's ? Would BP's have something ? Paul

John, Here are a couple of loads that member Dave Miles sent me awhile back.

2 1/2" Cheddite (RST) hull
Cheddite or Winchester 209 primer
20 grains International Clays powder
GU-1222 wad.
1 oz. lead shot/6 fold crimp
1220 FPS@6800 PSI


2 1/2" Cheddite(RST) hull
Cheddite or Winchester 209 primer
22 grains IMR PB powder
GU-1222 wad
1oz lead shot/6 fold crimp
1225 FPS@7200 PSI

Paul, Gualandi Wads..... Outfits such as Precision Reloading use their own numbers in the catalog but they can be cross referenced.

Does anyone know if the 12 ga. 2 1/2 inch Polywad Vintager uses a cheddite hull? and would the above work for used vintager hulls?

Brent, I believe the Poly-Wad hull is cheddite also.

Apparently, the Cheddite hull is used by many outfits. The headstamp with four stars and four digits designating the gauge is found on RSTs, Polywads and Gamebore to name a few.

Im having a problem locating the GU-1222 wads. Grafs doesn't list a 1oz Gulandi wad online ( at least I cant find them) would there be another 1 oz wad that could be substituted?

It's my understanding that Graff's isn't going to carry Gulandi wads anymore.
You can get them from Ballistic Products.
I'm quite sure this is the same wad, though I haven't ordered any myself.

I've been thinking about a similar question for a pile of 2 1/2" Vintager hulls that I want to reload. I learned from this thread that they are Cheddite hulls and I can tell that they use the BP Piston Skeet wads. The shot charge is 24 grams with a folded crimp. I'm still trying to figure out the powder or what i could use with good results.

The powder charge is 20.5 grains of a dark gray small flake powder. It resembles Bullseye in flake size but is darker and more uniform in color. It is also just a tad darker than Power Pistol. (I know that I can't identify a powder just by appearance but I can sure eliminate a lot of them).

I have a Ballistic Products recipe sheet for 2 1/2" "English" loads and their Bullseye 3/4 oz recipe uses more than 20.5 grains of Bullseye and their 7/8 oz load uses a little less so Bullseye looks like a promising candidate but they use Fiocchi hulls and a different wad.

I am still new to shot shell reloading but have been reloading rifle and pistol ammo for 30" years so I do know enough to not just start stuffing the hulls with whatever's handy.

Can anyone tell me what small flake powders look like Bullseye but are darker?

Can anyone suggest an alternate powder that would work for a low pressure load with my components? I have plenty of Clays and Universal Clays on hand.

Jim, When you are mentioning 24 grams I assume you are talking about 12 gauge loads. Correct?

Yes, 12 gauge is correct.

Jim, Clays can be loaded down to a low pressure load. I myself use IMR PB or IMR SR7625. Also I use Remington and Winchester hull so hopefully someone else will chime in here for load data using Cheddite hulls.

I think PB is one that might work. I have used it before for 2 3/4" loads in Winchester hulls. I may give it a try.

Cross Referencing GU 1222 1225 wads
 

Anyone know how to cross reference GU 1222 and GU 1225 wads with those available from BP or Precision?

Would like to use Dave Miles nice 2.5 inch loads but need the wads/ a cross reference to those BP and Precision have....or ?

Does anyone reload the 12ga 2 1/2 paper rst hulls? I have been hunting with them in #7 shot and am very happy with the results.Paper shells and a damascus DH just go together.

I just loaded up some two and a half inch polywads with the recipe on this thread. After some experimentation on getting the right hight to prop up the last crimping steps on my MEC Jr. I ended up glueing three pennies to put under the hull at the last station. And 2quarters and two dimes under the crimp starter station. They loaded nicely and I shot a round of skeet through my old Trojan. They shot nicely too.

I solved the problem of not finding adequate data for short (2 9/16th inch) shells for my short cambered 16gauge guns by trimming 2 3/4 inch hulls to the short length and using a roll crimp. You can use the same load data published for 2 3/4 inch folded crimp shells because the interior volume is very close to the same between the folded crimp 2 3/4 inch hull and the 2 5/8th inch hull with a rolled crimp (which was the old standard for 12 gauge shells). Besides roll crimps either in paper (Federal) or plastic are so cool and using the the Federal paper you have the advantage of that great smell that cannot be duplicated by plastic shells. I use vintage roll crimp tools picked up on eBay cheap, in 12 gauge anyway which adds to the fun of loading. Circle Fly sells over shot cards and if you want to go completely retro they also sell fiber cushion and fiber nitro cards. The early Lyman reloading books have several nice low pressure 1 1/8th ounce loads in 12 gauge using SR 7625.

Brent - just put a piece of wood or steel under the piece of sheet metal that holds the shell for the start and final crimp station. Pull up the spring and you can slide the sheet metal out and glue something under it. If you're loading a shell a 1/2" shorter, that's the thickness of shim you'll need. Mec sells a spacer for shorter shells for about $25 - you can make your own cheaper. You can also adjust the whole machine down with the bolt going through the main shaft. There's two holes in the shaft and two holes in the base - find what works for you. Paul
