I'd like to see the rest of the BH 28. Is it one of the first 28s?
|
This is my father's VH, now mine. It's the one that got me involved here when I first started looking for replacement barrels. Big mistake. Bitten by the bug and suffering some serious "itis".
The stock was really rough, so in the late '70s or early '80s, I re-did the wood and stripped and cleaned all the metal. This wood saw a lot of hunting after the re-finish. It is hand rubbed oil (Lin Speed was the brand). Probably at least 20 coats, cut down with 0000 steel wool between every coat. The wood fared better than the barrels ultimately. Bill the BH 28 was made in 1930. Here are some additional pictures. DelGrego redid the colors sometime ago.

Linspeed

Jack, I really like Linspeed finish. Here's a '98 I refinished (my first) about 55 years ago with Linspeed using the same process you did on the VH. Every few years, a few more drops hand rubbed in brings it up to "speed".
Also, here's a l&r of a butt stock (not Linspeed); can you guess the grade? |
Nice grain Fred. I'm not great at guessing. It is a simple checkering pattern, squared off at the end. On that alone, I'll eliminate ABCDGV. Is it a Trojan with a capped PG? I have not seen that checkering pattern before but there's a lot I haven't seen in this life.
Cheers, Jack |
COB i'd like to see more of the stright grip Bernard.
|
Jack, That was a trick question as the gun is not a Parker though the "Trojan" grade is close. It's a 12ga Ruger Red Label, American made like the Parker.

THIS IS FOR A DH 12GA.

Here is my before and after of my VH 20GA. Had a stick of english I was dying to use. Made a dramatic difference in the look of the gun I think.

I always liked the wood on this early DH short barreled 10-bore, and if I remember correctly it ended up going to an old curmudgeon in the Maryland area...;)

SC TRAP GUN

Chris, that is a rather nice piece of wood on the old DH ten. However, I don't shine them up, so that's the best that one is ever going to look. Stripped and reoiled, it would be outrageous, I guess. Was that once your gun?
|
Murph, You are right it's a nice piece of wood, and that's the way it looked the day you picked it up in the on-line auction... I always thought you should have at least bought that guy a beer who came here to the PGCA forum asking advice on whether or not it was a good gun for him to buy with those odd length short barrels... It sure was nice of him to tell you where it was listed when you asked which web-site it was on..... Nope, it never belonged to me, but like you, I admired it's unique features (including the wood)...

Calvin per your request here are some more pics of the CHE Bernard 16. It will make a fine Pheasant gun....even better with the set of 12ga bbls that fit to it.

Rich,
If you are referring to the pic of the three gun's against the fence they are my AAH, Dave’s BH, and Deans ball grip CH. That pic was taken at Addieville a couple of years ago after our shoot with the Fox guys. The AA was restocked for me by Abe Chaber a few years ago and is my favorite clays gun. |
Sorry, I should have credited those guns with the owner's names.
The other straight grip I showed is my 28 ga. Repro grouse & woodcock gun. |
Larry I remember that gun from Hausmanns shoot two years ago. She is a beauty. No wonder I never saw Dean with it, It's NOT his:nono::whistle:
