Roger Coger.....
Roger Giles, a long time forum and PGCA member, has been conspicuous in his absence here for the past few months. He's been fighting some health problems and hasn't been able to get on the computer.
I just wanted to let everybody know that he's come home today for hospice care. I've been down visiting him in the hospital several days a week since he went in and was just down to his place this evening. He's weak and isn't doing well but is now home with his much loved wife Anita and lab Dixie. Will be back there again tomorrow and throughout the coming weeks. If anybody has a word they'd like me to pass along to him please drop a PM and I'll make sure it gets through. Regards, Destry |
I'm so sorry to hear of Roger's difficulties. He is one of the good ones. Please give him my most sincere regards. He will be in my prayers tonight.
|
Just tell him there's a guy in Nova Scotia pulling for him. A friend of yours says a lot about Mr. Giles.
|
Destry, Please relay our well wish's to Rog. We had a great conversation some years back at "Legal Spirits" down in Easton,Maryland. He is one of the good guy's. Danny and I will be pulling for him here and thank you for the update.
|
Destry,
Roger is indeed a lucky man to have a friend like you. He is definitely one of a kind and I enjoyed hunting with him in South Dakota and seeing him at the Southern. Please pass along my sincerest best wishes for him and Anita. |
Roger
I hope Roger get better. I miss him at the S x S events in the spring. Tell him, please, I hope he get on his feet soon. Thanks, Frank
|
I'm down to visit again today and Nancy Muderlak has come to see him as well. Spoke with Fred Preston this morning and he's going to come in next week. The house is brimming with Parker folks.

I sure have missed Roger and Anita at the Southern. Last time there, Linda and I and Roger and Anita went to dinner together and had a great time. Roger is most noted at the Southern for his caustic comments about Sporting Clays. He couldn't understand why Bill Kempfler didn't put in some trap fields. I am especially grateful about Roger's posts about Robert Owen and his son. I only wish that I could have spent some time with Roger discussing his relationship with the Owens.
|
He's moving to a hospice facility near his home in the morning, I'm going down to visit in the afternoon.
Bob Owen called while I was there the other day and is hoping to visit soon. We had a good visit with Nancy Muderlak while she was there. I've had lots of emails and have been passing on all messages. This is an end game situation for the guys that don't know what hospice is. He's in no pain and in full grasp of his faculties which I guess is all that you can ask for at a time like this. Destry |
I suspect he will be in Hospice of Northwest Ohio. My Mother-in-law was there prior to her passing. If so, he is in a great facility.
|
I don't know Roger but my prayers go out to him and his family.
Thanks Destry for visiting Roger. |
tell rodger old charlie pullin for him too... charlie
|
My deepest condolences for Roger and I hope that he somehow pulls through. Roger is one of our long time characters and a Parker enthusiast. He and his buddy Jack came with us to South Dakota quite a few years ago and enjoyed themselves and the food.
An image I hold of Roger is him with his custom stock comb of cardboard and duct tape. God be with you, Roger. |
Prayers for Roger as well. ch

Our friend Charles Roger Giles has gone across the river to rest in the shade.
He will be missed by all that knew him. A fine man and a fine shot, his like is not often found in this world and we are less for his passing. |
It seems lately that we are losing too many friends. God bless Roger's family and may he be in a better place where the birds are flying and the weather is perfect. RIP Rodger.
|
My sincere condolences to Anita and to the family. Destry you are right..we are less without him. God Bless him and his family.
|
Thanks Destry, for keeping us informed about Roger's health situation and now, his passing.
Roger was a very colorful man and a friend to many, and from what I hear, a lot of fun to spend time with. My prayers are for his Anita and his family and friends. Again we are diminished. |
life is but as a flower it soon fades away...but let us give thanks that we were allowed to have known such a man.. i know the pain the family and close friends are going thru but the LORD PROMISES US A BETTER PLACE ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE RIVER THAT RODER HAS CROSSED... may the LORD WATCH OVER THE FAMILY.... CHARLIE
|
I'll look for him on the other side of the river when my time comes to make that trip. I'm sure he'll have a good squirrel woods found and a bottle of scotch on stash to share.
He was game to the last. A few days ago, when he was still somewhat vocal, we had our final good talk. He wanted recent skirt chasing tales and a report on this springs duck hatch, happily I was able to supply both in abundance. Anita his wife said that he wanted to be cremated and that they were going to have a memorial service sometime in the near future once everything settled down a bit. |
Requiescat in Pace' Roger. God Bless You and Your Family

Damn, I was hoping for one more hunt with Roger. I have very fond memories of the ruffled grouse hunt that I had the privilege to be on with Roger near Iron River Mi. Than talking with him at the S X S shoot was always a pleasure. He was a fine person and I will miss him. Frank Halsey

Roger was quite some guy and Linda and I will miss him. He sure was not one to attempt to blend into the crowd if the crowd somehow did not go his way. He reminds me a bit of Destry and another Mugwump whom I will not name. Excuse me if I capitalize "Mugwump" but I'm not sure of the proper form. I'm sure Roger would have told me if this form is correct, or not. Thank you Destry for keeping us informed of Roger's situation. Rest in peace, Roger, and Anita, please be well.
|
Oh I think it should be capitalized because life would be pretty dull with out em!!! "Mugwump" thats new word for calvin but it will be noted. thanks Bill ch
|
i too am lost as too what a mugwamp is....bet bill and destrey know....im still sad over rodger codger... charlie
|
A "mugwump" is a person who is a member of an organization or political party who agrees with the general "constitution" of the organization, but takes exception to those who violate that "constitution" for their own benefit. Roger definitely was an independent spirit.
|
Oh, my. I've been away from the forum for quite a while, and have just learned of Roger's passing. Roger was one of the good guys, and though I've never met him I'll miss his presence here. Who tell us tales about Ol' Klunker, and whom can we now count on to PTG? My prayers and sympathies are extended to his family and those of you who were close friends. Thanks, Destry.

I'll never forget the trip Roger, Destry and I made to the Southern one year. Those stories will live on forever and they still make me laugh.
Goodbye Roger. |
There will be a memorial service for Roger on August 13th at 11am with a luncheon following at the United Methodist Church in Rossford, Ohio. I plan on being there needless to say, anybody else that's going to attend please let me know.

With Roger's memorial service coming up on Saturday, I thought I'd post a few pictures.
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b3...ing2004002.jpg Ed Muderlak, Jack Apple, Roger Giles, and myself at Roger's home one evening for dinner. These were some of Roger's favorite times, we always had a few drinks and it was solid gun talk. http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b3...nrack001-1.jpg Several years ago, when Roger had moved into the current house, he finally had a spare bedroom which immediately became the gun room. First thing he did was go to work building a first class gun rack to display his firearms. This gun rack now resides in my home, one of his parting gifts to me. http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b3...nfordNC037.jpg Roger shooting at the first Parker / LC Smith Challenge. He was on the very first Parker final squad, something he was very proud of. http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b3...rdeating-1.jpg Roger loved to cook and host his friends for wild game dinners. This is one of he, myself, and Jack Apple after Roger and I had returned from a two day railbird shoot in Virginia. He made the rails into a marsala that would have made the angels sing. http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b3...lHunters-1.jpg Roger and I after our first squirrel hunt together. He liked to do it up right and have a first class field lunch after a shooting day. http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b3...rtleSoup-1.jpg One more I couldn't resist posting. The phone rang one afternoon and he just said you'd better get your ass down here for dinner. I got my hands on a nice turtle this morning and I've got a pot of soup on. It was so good I felt I had to take a picture of it for posterity.... |
Thanks for the photos Des, nice past memories.
|
thanks destrey for the photos...this is what hunting is about the pictures tell it all..... charlie

Thanks DH. Here's one that probably should be in "other fine doubles (5 shot)" or maybe "off topic". How about some of the old guy in his Harry Truman; I know they're out there.
|
Destry - Need more information on the squirrel hunting hat. Railroad engineer or USMC?
|
John,
That would be a BIGSCO hat actually, meaning Bought in Gas Station Corruna Ontario. They had a pile of them, I should have bought half a dozen. It's become my favorite warm weather shooting cap and it's getting pretty rough looking. Fred, That's the famous Harry Truman hat in the Parker / LC Smith challenge photo. It's the only one I could find of him in it oddly enough, though I know there must be more. That photo of all of us with our humpbacks cracks me up. There's you and Roger with every hair you ever had and both my senior by several years. Then there's me, bald as a hickory nut. You boys certainly must have some secret nobody ever told me about. Destry |
We were driving to the Southern a couple of years back and you and Roger were in a car next to us. We stopped for lunch and a bit latter we stopped in the middle of the x-way for cheese and crackers. Dave and I got tired and crossed over the medium to get off and stayed the night in a motel. Still have the marks on my door from a plastic traffic barrel that I didn't see. Hope he gets well soon. Paul

Paul,
If you'll read the thread you'll find that Roger has passed away and his memorial service is this Saturday. Destry |
Thanks to Destry I spoke to Roger shortly before he went into hospice. I can say that he was still a lovable curmudgeon. I hope to be as gracious under the circumstances.
Roger was one of a couple of you guys that left a lasting impression on my son Corey who came with to the first couple "Southerns". From the moment he met him Roger made Corey feel like he was welcome and equal among the men there. It was that way at the 5 stand and also at cocktail time and dinner. I have an image etched in my mind of Roger lookiing Corey right in the eye wearing that "give them hell" Harry Truman hat.....I think those weekends had an impact on Corey that lasts to this day. Roger will live on in our memories and in some others that will outlive all of us. Roger and I only spoke a few times in the last couple of years but I do miss him. All the best, Jeff Mulliken |
Good to hear from you Jeff.
There are a scant few men who made a difference in our lives when we were boys. It appears that Roger was one of those for Corey. |
Roger's service was a honor to the man, a full house at the church and lots of friends (including myself) getting up and telling tales.
