My dilemma
 

I purchased a Parker VH 20g a while back. I should have sent it back when I noticed a shim fall out of the barrel. I didn’t realize what it was at first and the gun locked up fine. Well, recently I noticed the barrel is off face by a very slight amount. Cost to fix this is likely 2K. Wondering what I should do? Fix it and be into it for 5500 or call it a loss?

If otherwise the gun is in great shape and you enjoy shooting it, I'd recommend getting fixed. My gunsmith is Dan Cullity in Sandwich Mass. Brian Dudley of this forum is also a fine gunsmith.

My thought exactly. Figure I like the gun and it’s in good shape so why not. Also Dan Cullity is who I am sending it to. Spoke to him today. He checked out some barrels in the past for me and he is excellent.

Where did the $2K repair estimate come from, Seems way high.

I believe that would be the cost to re-weld and build the barrel hook.

I have had 3 guns put on face for <$300 each. I’m not sure the problem is being described correctly.

Maybe I misheard or misunderstood something. I wasn’t shocked by the cost but….

Cost is a relative factor. To each his own.

Put a brass shim back on the roll. .003" or less should do it.

Isn't the proper way to put a Parker Bros. back on face to remove part 29, take out part 28 and replace it with a size larger part 28?

All of mine were repaired with laser welding some more material to the worn surface. Modern tech solving century old problems. 10-15 minutes in the laser welder and a little bit of fitting then bobs your uncle.

I've seen actions tightened very well with steel shim stock attached with adhesive. Very clean repair and permanent unless you apply a torch to remove it.

Glue a shim in place. End of story.

My SC SBT has a shim; works very well. It's not even glued on; I just need to be mindful when I take the barrel off.

I think worst case scenario you’re more than likely $1500 high on your cost .

My maternal grandfathers 10 gauge W&C Scott crystal indicator gun has a shim around the hinge pin he put in it back in 1946 and it works just fine .

I have used two different gunsmiths that will use a laser welder to build up the hook then re fit it. One charges $450 the other $475. As long as the rest of the gun is good and you are happy with it, it seems worth it to me.
