reloading 16 ga
1 Attachment(s)
Any recommendations using these hulls for a low pressure load?
Powder? primer? wad? My original Trojan was lengthened to 2 3/4. Thanks :) |
If you should decide what wad you want I may be able to help you out . I have four different 16 gauge wads and darn near a case of each . The WIN WAA16 , the Claybuster knockoffs of the WIN wad in both 1 ounce and 7/8 ounce as well as over a case of REM SP-16 wads .
|
I buy those Fiocchi hulls as NPEs from BPI. They publish plenty of loads. I use their SG-16 was, and a powder no longer available, so my recipe won't help you but my 2.5", 7/8 oz loads are delightful. Years ago, I had them tested using 7625, and PB is virtually the same at about 6700psi.
|
Those are nice factory loads for fluid steel barrels, I like them, but generally shoot 7/8 and 3/4 oz reloads. Luckily have appropriate powders., what powder is available for you?
|
For what it’s worth, the last time I tried reloading Fiocchi hulls, several primers separated from the hull. The fit was not tight enough. The hulls were 12 gauge.

If you are shooting them thru a Trojan witn 2 3/4" chambers, I wouldn't worry about the pressure. If your worried about recoil, the pressure does not enter into the equation.
I do have the 16 ga forum low pressure loads info on my home computer and will look up the Fiocchi info. |
I really appreciate the helpful responses. I have the Claybuster CB0100-16 wads and Win 572 and Hogdon Perfect Pattern on hand and Win 209 primers. I have Cheddite 209 primers and Longshot on order. So whatever works :)
It's a puzzle when many options are out of stock or discontinued. Thanks in advance, Clark |
Clarke, I find no loads listed in my spreadsheet for Win 572 or Perfect Pattern, but the spreadsheets are about ten years old. There are some for Longshot ( often called Loudshot, but never loaded it.
Wondering if I can send this file to your email, if you send me your email by pm, I can try. I also have some printed off that I will also try to take a picture of and post here. |

I have a big file of all different hulls, powder, primers, and wads marked low pressure that I can send to your email.
Here are some other loads I had printed. |

Try this again

I started loading the 16 using WIN WSF about the time WIN brought out the WAA16 wad . Since that time I’ve used Universal Clays some , Unique a fair amount , SR7625 a fair amount and maybe 8-10 pounds of SR4756 in a load the guy I bought several thousand WIN smooth red AA style hulls from . It’s worth noting all the 16’s I loaded were ounce loads .
|
On its way Clarke, hope it's useful. Also have files of regular pressure loads. Theses all came off the 16 ga Forum years ago
|
Clark, are those the only hulls you have, or that you prefer to load? Seems like worlds open up for the 16 with 2 1/2" Cheddite hulls. I've loaded those in 12 and they're good for one reload, seemed a bit floppy after that but that might just be a faulty observation as I was just starting out. I can reload Cheddite's a number of times and STS or Gun Clubs like 45,000 times.
|
I have some of these Fiocchi to use up, didn't want to just throw them out, but I may wind up doing that. I also have some 2 1/2 RST which Im guessing are the same as Cheddite.
I have some 2 1/2 cheddites ordered as well. Just got my 16 ga loader last week. Anxious to get started ! |
Hahahaha!! I was there. Now I can fill a landfill with hulls I will never use. My simple advice is get a short kit for the MEC and stick with 2.5 cheddite. If you need any I can send you some PM me.

Clark,
Here’s a low pressure 7/8 oz load with Cheddite 2 1/2 hulls and longshot FWIW.. Brett |
That looks like a nice low pressure load, Brett, I think I'll try it.
|
Harold,
I should have mentioned that these loads were roll crimped. I have similar loads with Unique, Universal Clays and Green dot as well. Best, Brett |
Thanks Brett,
From what I have seen, it just seems the way to go to use a 2 1/2 cheddite….the short kit is going on the MEC ! |
Hi. Brett and thx for sharing your load data. Just clarifying you use a .045 card on top of the powder and another on top of the shot?
Thx |
Rick,
Yes, that’s what I did. I used the card over the powder to keep it in place. It probably isn’t needed, but that was my thinking. Brett |
thank you. I will try these next.
Always like new to me recipes. |
|
What is the entry for "overshot device" and where does that go? On top of the shot?

Goes on top...Gives a better crimp for 7/8 oz shot. |
I shoot standard field loads thru my 20 ga Trojan without any issues.

All sorts of useful things in the pantry - chick peas!

I love it. I use small pinto beans. That way if I miss I might be planting something.

I had the following issue with the Focci 12 gauge hulls. They are somewhat flimsy compared to AA. I had a bunch of them that I cut down to 2-1/2 inches and reloaded them. While I was shooting them the gun (Parker ) would not close completely. I witched to another gun ( not a Parker) and they worked fine. Once I got home I check the other shells I had reloaded and found about 1/2 of the had the same issue . I then tried them in other 12 gauge guns. What I found out was the metal base seems to have a variance in the manufacture. So they all worked fine in old hammer guns and they worked in a Blaser and Kreighoff. I would try them once you have deprimed and resized the case and see if the fit in your gun. I have discarded the ones I have and will find another hull that works. Bob |
Would this be fixed with a Sizemaster Bob? I have a 12g Sizemaster and I had that issue but once it was fired in that Parker they didn't need to be resized again. They weren't Fiocchi though, I believe they were once fired Cheddite. It was only in one VH I have that gave me an issue with that hull. I did not fire the Cheddite they were given to me so I have no idea what chamber they came from and if they had expanded to fit that chamber. I hope this makes some sense.
|
Bob, I think the solution for me is to keep it simple. I'll use up the Fiocchi I have and discard the hulls. Going forward I stockpile the RST for the 16 ga. It seems the best recipes for 16 ga are for the 2 1/2 hulls.
Thanks, Clark |
