Wife reminded me that I did not shoot a deer last year and we were low on venison.
I had passed on several Ohio bucks this season trying for one of the big 10s or the 12 running around on my Ohio farm. Shot this mediocre 8 pt yesterday just before 5 o'clock, no blood in the 6 plus inches of snow, tracked it a while an found 1 drop of blood then another 20 yds ahead, then spotted it down below piled up dead, cant believe there wasn't a heavy blood trail as bullet passed thru taking out both lungs.
Was a real bear of a drag up a damn near vertical hill, and just as hard to get him on the tailgate by myself. Should be a fine eater. Oh, this was muzzle loader season, using an inline 50 cal CVA.

Congratulations Harold,

Always rests a little easier when the freezer has adequate venison for the new year!

Harold Lee Pickens 01-04-2026 11:12 PM

Thanks Stan, the wife likes venison, the rarer the better.

Nice!!
You’re a better man than I am… by a long shot Harold. Such a drag would kill me.
Thank God I still have venison from two earlier deer in my freezer and plenty of moose meat from our October hunt east of the Allagash Wilderness Waterway.

A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. Waiting for the wall-hanger is a frustrating occupation. Congratulations.

Congratulations and buy yourself an ATV cuts down on heart attacks !!!!!

Dean Romig 01-05-2026 01:02 AM

Right Craig, I hear those John Deere Gators are pretty decent…

My granddaughter, who lives within sight of my house, has a great low mileage John Deere Gator. One of these days, I hope to talk her into selling it to me.

Harold Lee Pickens 01-05-2026 01:05 PM

An atv would not have made it to where this deer dropped, and even with a winch would need 100 yds of cable.

Dean Romig 01-05-2026 01:11 PM

How on earth did you get it up that hill Harold??

Nothing against UTV’s as I like them as well but I’ll take an ATV a lot more places than a UTV can go or fit . I probably do some stuff with it driving wise that I shouldn’t but old/lazy tends to bring that on it seems :rotf::rotf:

If you know a boring or utility contractor maybe they will give you some of the flat nylon rope they use to blow through tubes and then pull the fiber back. Once it is used you can get it by the garbage bag full here and it's quite stout. I keep a lengthy piece in the barn for just such a scenario as you have encountered Harold and I have used it, what a life saver. You might need a tractor or your truck to pull em out though. An ATV will not do it if there's much distance and verticality, a gas UTV might, an electric UTV probably will. It takes a lot of torque to get all the stretch out of the line and then pull the animal up. The Ranger or Bad Boy type EV will get the job done, forget the Gator. Ask me how I know :banghead: Congrats on your buck !
