Shipping shells for testing
I know you can't use the USPS. The UPS site is a little confusing. Can you just put "Shotshells" in the label description and go with it. Thanks!

The UPS Store won't take live ammo at their locations for shipping or receiving. I was told by UPS HazMat to order a pickup at your home for outgoing shipping. UPS service locations that sort deliveries will take ammo, but most locations have limited hours or are out right closed to the public.

The other option is to contact the testing company and request they e-mail you a UPS shipping label and any other labels required.
Our government has allowed this problem with shipping companies to happen --with an individual not being allowed to ship ammo as previously allowed |
FedEx will also not allow you to ship shells over the counter, you need to, as has been outlined, have the testing company send you a prepaid shipping label. I did this just a month ago with Precision. I purchased the UPS label and they emailed it to me. I put it on the shell package and just dropped it off at the local CVS store as they take UPS returns. No problem.

I recently did some research on this topic as I wanted to compliantly ship shells for testing to both Tom Armbrust and Precision Reloading. As mentioned above USPS and FedEx would not allow individuals to ship hazmat material. UPS allowed me to ship them as long as they were picked up from my home address, shell box was appropriately placed in an outer shipping box, and a limited HazMat label attached to the external shipping box, and it must go “ground transportation”. The downside is this adds significant cost and time to the process. I went to our local UPS distribution center and they would not accept the package because they ship via air. The staff there was very helpful providing all the regulations for an individual to ship limited HazMat packages. Neither Tom or Precision Reloading said anything about sending a label.

I have a personal and business account with UPS. Due to my FFL the business account will only deliver with an adult signature. I ship via my personal account so no signature necessary and only ship ammo ground delivery. Not a big deal since it's only going to IL. I have shipped flats of ammo in the past with no problem as long as it goes ground.

Enter all the data for the shipment on my account page. Then pay and print it out. We normally have shipments coming here every week so I just either wait for the delivery or I call our UPS driver and meet him to give him my parcel. Easy peasy.
Anyone can go onto the UPS site and create an account. That way you can schedule shipments and pay/print your shipping labels. |
Thanks Mike

Testing
If you ship to Precision look on the bottom of their web page and will see Ballistic testing, there you can download a label to attach to your package to go through UPS or FedEx.I have done this and dropped package at local ups store and paid shipping there if I remember and it wasn't too expensive but I'm only 60 miles away in the same state. If you ship to Tom Armbrust you are on your own.He doesn't care how you get them there but does a great job of testing. We are good friends and a while back he needed some powder he was out of to test a few loads.I had extra on hand so filled several 10 gauge hulls full with a fired primer and crimped them shut and shipped ups. I was a little worried I might get in trouble but he got the package and all is well.
