Northeast SxS at Hidden Hollow
If you have never been to Penn's Woods, or as we know it, Pennsylvania, you really should experiance it. The beauty of the sunlight casting through a canopy of green is a delight to anyone! For we who appreciate classic SxS shotguns I know of no better manner in which to enjoy Penn's Woods than the annual Great Northeastern SxS Classic at Hausmann's Hidden Hollow.
Here's our Crusty Old B..., make the COB! http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p...1_edit_038.jpg Between shots COB could always be found scrounging 2 1/2" 16 gauge hulls. http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p...1_edit_004.jpg A bunch of PGCA members between stations on Friday, which is a practice day. http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p...1_edit_018.jpg Dean, Dave, and Rich enjoying the splendor of the woods. http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p...1_edit_015.jpg Dean in action! http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p...1_edit_011.jpg Here's Larry! http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p...1_edit_013.jpg Opening Day shooting over the water. http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p...1_edit_041.jpg Mike Koranda traveled from Duluth Minnisota to participate! http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p...1_edit_030.jpg Rick is also from Duluth. http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p...1_edit_029.jpg Finally, this is me shooting my Super Fox. I should have shot a 10 gauge... http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p...1_edit_021.jpg More reports to follow... |

Well it's Hausmann's and guess what? Yup, it rained! It started out sunny but started to cloud over about 9:30, and by about 11:30 as we were on our last 2 stations it started to drizzle. The drizzle turned into a heavy rain for the next 3 hours or so. Cold and damp with temps in the mid 50's. This is June?? All the shooting came to an end, the tent was filled up with buyers and those of us who wanted to stay dry. When the rain keeps you from shooting, the only other thing left was to eat so we did. When I left at 3:15 the sun came out and it's beautiful right now. Attached are a few photo's.

These are some of the anything but typical sporting clays stations at Hidden Hollow!

Mark,
Thanks for the pictures and the ones on double gun bbs. Did anybody shoot the Bo Whoop event? How were the targets. Any details would be appreciated. John |
John,
The targets [5pr] were incredibly challenging for the Bo Whoop. First target appears at about 40yd. and the second target [coming from the right] is at about 60+yd. when you get get back on the gun for the second shot. Three shooters tied with a five [ I only managed a 4] and a shootoff decided a winner with a 2 out of 10 pairs. To say the least it was a blast and was well run by the Fox guys. Like the challenge at the Southern it is the main reason I attend. The clays course is very challenging and there are an interesting mix of targets. But the reason that everyone should try to make this shoot are the great group of shooters that you meet representing the various manufacturers. To the Fox guys, thanks for a great event and to the Parker guys [I don't have to mention names] it was a pleasure and an honor to spend the weekend with you all. What a great group of guys. Also a big thanks to Kathy Romig and Debbie Frye for putting up with our behaviour and spoiling us with handmade sandwiches and snacks at the nightly happy hour. It don't get no better than this. Can't wait till next year- hope yopu can make it with your 34'' made for Bo Whoop gun. Daryl |
Thanks Mr. Corona,
Sounds like a great time and great event. I might have to put that one on the calender for next year. That is if they will allow me north of the mason dixon line. |
John,
If need be I'll sneak you across the M/D line with my Virginia lab and her Eastern shore of Maryland partner. Lose the Southern drawl and you'll be in like Flynn. [The club is located off Flynn Rd.]. Sorry I could'nt resist. Besides, the club is located far enough away from Gettysburg that nobody really knows who R.E. Lee was nor what he attempted to do. God bless Ole' Virginny. Daryl |
Sounds good.
Your story about Gettysburg was way cool. It has me on a kick here of late. Told it to one of my assistants the other day and she got goosebumps. Hope to see ya soon. John |
John,
When my grandson and I left last weekend from the Old Forge shoot I took him to his first Civil War battle site- Cold Harbor. Other than SxS's and shooting them the CW is another one of my passions. Daryl |
Doctor Truitt, the long barrel guns at the Northeast Shoot will have you salivating. The Bo Whoop competition was a gun exhibition more than a shooting exhibition. X Grade Foxes and B Grade Parkers were not numerous but they were there on the firing line.
|
My two cents on the Bo-Whoop targets is that a shooter absolutely needs a 12 ga. gun with at least .035" of constriction and some tried and true time-tested loads. A good amount of practice at similar targets is a plus. The #1 target launches from a good forty yards and angles away from the shooter crossing left to right at a high rate of speed and only presents an "on edge" silhouette to shoot at. The #2 target launches from easily fifty yards away in a slow right to left arching loop dropping to earth some eighty yards away.
I think skill and luck play about equal parts in this game and I had only a smidgin' of each as I only broke one of the #1 targets in the only 10-shot round I shot. |

It's good to hear you gents are safely back at home. I agree with Dean, some heavy choke was needed this year on both birds. I started out on Friday with a Super Fox with its #2 barrel, choked 24 and 40. I couldn't do much with that right barrel. Most of my shooting was with another Fox choked 42 and 42, and some practice shooting on the second bird with a Fox SBT gun, choked 43 thou. All with 1-1/8 ounce loads of hard 7.5's. Best breaks were with another Super choked 50 and 51, using Winny AA Super Pigeon loads with 1-1/4 ounce of coppered 7.5's. But that Fox was just too heavy (9 pounds) to catch the first screamer. Yep I do have some Parkers too. Frank

Mr. Romig,
Could you tell us a little bit about that very nice looking graded hammer gun you are holding. Wow a 34" flat rib 8 bore, straight grip. That is one very interesting gun. Whats the story behind it? Wow |
Dr. John, it is a sixteen gauge, Grade 3, 0-Frame with lightening cuts, in extremely high original condition with the exception of the 25 3/8" barrels. I can't comment on the originality of the length of the barrels but where we would normally see keels there is only wax or some other substance visible. It belongs to Morris Baker and better men than I have tried to coerce him into parting with it.
|
Mr. Romig,
Thank you. That is a very desireable gun. Man it looks like you guys had a blast. Thank you for sharing. Hope all is well. John |
We had a fantastic time!! I have other pictures that Ill post tonight.
|
We certainly did have a wonderful time. There was a great group of people in attendance, especially those from the four collector organizations. Although several PGCA members attended our display area, Dean Romig, Larry Frey, their wifes, Dave Suponski and son Danny were the real workers. This is a great display and shooting venue. I can't wait for next year.

(I know I hit that chopper at least once... ) 5. It was a bit wet on Sunday and Danny got a little squirrelly with the golf cart a bit too close to Larry... somehow he missed sprayin' gumbo on the A Grade. |
Those pictures are very nice but I want to see the pictures of Anderson during the chair race.....:biglaugh:

Perfect...:rotf: Please take note that COB never lost control of the glass.....It's a long story......What's that ol sayin...What happens in PA. stay's in PA......Not anymore.....
|
I think those two orbs floating around COB's head are his guardian angels.
|
Good glass control is a paramount as good gun control...your just lost (and thirsty) without it.
A week from Thursday some of us more rugged souls will head to northern Michigans Upper Pennisula and do it all over again for the U.P. shoot. I don't expect to buy anything at that shoot:whistle: |
