Fishig Story #2

Actually this one might be more of a hunting story. I went back to The Cove where I had my tussle with the big carp a while back; cottonwood seeds are starting to fly and most of the ones that land on this water seem to end up here, so I thought maybe some hungry carp would be checking them out. I was hoping to see some big ol' carp mouths slurping seeds (they looked tasty enough to me!) and every once in a while a softshell turtle would pop up and get me excited or a second or so. I don't know what those guys do - they just pop up, look around, then dive. Maybe they're just nosey. Anyway, no carp did I see.

Years ago my wife bought me a "fishing chair" at Eddie Bauer back before it became a clothing store; it's been riding around in the back of my truck ever since and I'm not sure I've ever used it, but this seems like a good time, so I brought my 7wt, the biggest net I have, and the chair down and set up my carp blind. Found some pine tree shade, filled a pipe with good baccy (Country Squire's Shepherd's Pie - good stuff) and set about waiting for what I hoped would be some carp coming to dine. I don't know if there's such a thing as carp decoys but if I'd had any I would have laid out a spread.

Long story longer: Sherlock Holmes once referred to something as a "three pipe problem"; I only lasted one. The thought of a cold beer seemed more appealing than a second pipe so I broke down my blind and headed to the house. No carp. (don't know why I always look so dour in my selfies. Or maybe it's just concentration?)

Thanks; widest brimmed one I could find!

Good choice for your beverage!

Chris Pope 06-02-2025 07:04 AM

The problem, as I see it, would be there's no back, armrests or cup holders on your chair. There are some modern alternatives available.

Phil Yearout 06-02-2025 10:30 AM

Nah; if I got that comfortable I’d fall asleep :rotf:

Daryl Corona 06-02-2025 06:02 PM

Around these parts that's known as a dove stool.

Phil Yearout 06-02-2025 08:32 PM

I thought dove stools were all 5 gallon buckets with a padded top.

Well that's exactly right! But only a light sleep. When your dog, lying down next to you, starts whining it means something is happening...fish on or doves coming in...perhaps a duck setting in the decoys...then you wake up and kick into action!

Wait!! Dogs will lie next to you while you sit and fish-snooze or dove hunt-snooze?! Not mine. They’d be playing in the water or over the hill looking to point some quail. I’m going to have to get me one o’ dem dawgs!:)

You most definitely picked the right brew. Mine is Guinness Extra Stout but to each his own.
I remember going trout fishing with my late Kathy on the Squannacook River in central Massachusetts. It's a great little trout river and browns were my favorite there. She would fish worms or spinners and I would of course always fish flies. We caught about the same number of trout... what memories...

Picture from 1967 about three years before we were married... and yes, that's me at 18 (not the one on the bra)

What a wonderful memory Dean. My beverage would be a Guinness Extra Stout laid gently upon the surface of a Boston Lager or a Saranac Pale Ale with a wee dram nearby.

Phil Yearout 06-04-2025 12:08 PM

A special memory Dean; I'm sure you cherish it. I've only had a couple of real fishing partners, but here's one of my favorites. She's 21 now...

Andrew Sacco 06-04-2025 08:24 PM

You’ll get there Phil. Comes with sophistication

Phil Yearout 06-04-2025 10:58 PM

I’ve drunk my share of Guiness; just not what I’m looking for to cool off on a warm day. Sorry if that doesn’t pass your sophistication test.

Sarcasm Phil it was sarcasm

Garry L Gordon 06-05-2025 07:40 AM

You guys could settle this over a beer. Let’s get Chris and Dean in on it, too. I’ll buy…and drink an icy cold hazy IPA:rotf::rotf:

Andrew Sacco 06-05-2025 07:44 AM

It’s a non issue. I haven’t met a beer I haven’t liked.

John Dallas 06-05-2025 11:11 AM

I prefer beers I can't see through

Harold Lee Pickens 06-06-2025 09:23 AM

On vacation in Hilton Head , have found several good red ales, but Yuengling is my go to
