8g SHOOTERS. We will still hold the 5-Stand event as is. I am toying with the idea of changing the field event from 30 birds to 50. What would you guys like to see on that 8g field event? I know what I'd want to shoot. :corn:

I was good with last years 30/30 !

Daryl Corona 01-09-2025 03:47 PM

Can, let's say a fellow showed up and didn't own an 8 ga, he compete with a 20 or 28ga? Asking for a friend of course.

I thought you'd say that. I read somewhere where 3/4oz of shot is more than enough to break those soft targets there. That's just what my friend told me.:nono::)

:)

Big boys can handle 12+ lb guns. :rotf::)

Stan Hoover 01-09-2025 08:00 PM

I’m happy with 5 Stand and 30 on the course, or 50. You call it big Mike

now running out of venison tenderloin on Friday evening would be a big problem:shock:

matt koepnick 01-10-2025 08:22 AM

:corn:We had to scrap all extra-curricular activities last year. We're hoping to get her cleared for them next week at the BMT Doc's office. If so, I'll be planning for this sole event and prob asking lotsa dumb questions (as usual) to get me in the know ahead of time. All the last year posts sounded like it was a ton of fun.

Just load more shells Stan! As for the t-loin, I think we have that covered again this year.

If you are not having fun at this shoot you are not trying hard enough. If you like to shoot, like good food and questionable camaraderie then this is the place for you. You are cordially invited to the daily afternoon teas at the Grotto provided we can stay out of jail. Seriously, the best shoot of the year.

Are screw choke guns allowed? Asking for a variable-choke manufacturer.

I gotta say Koneski Acres and Backwoods are without a doubt the two best places to go . Not to take anything away from Deep River or Hausemann's but I like them more .

Kevin, we will turn a blind eye! As long as said choke remains in the gun for the entire event it’s OK. But please, none of those ugly extended versions! :nono: :crying: :banghead: :rotf:

While they're not Parkers, I'm guessin my fixed choke Win 21 Double trigger 12's are all good to use?. Mostly shooting 7/8 loads with these tight choked guys.

Yes they are. You just might find something else to add to your collection while you're here. Always some nice classic American SxSs on the tables.

That will do fine Matt. I'm sure there will other guns to tempt you but your M21 is a classic.

matt koepnick 01-10-2025 08:56 PM

We enjoyed the Southern in April 2 years running 2022-2023. Missed everything last year.
I personally enjoyed the "Gun Show" portion of the event. The venders' booths always got a fair chunk of change from us both. I'm guessing Northern is similar to Southern.

Daryl Corona 01-11-2025 12:12 AM

The Northern is truly a shooters shoot. Much, much more than the Southern. The vendors are few but there will be lots of horse trading going on amongst the participants so some really good deals are to be had.

Harold Lee Pickens 01-12-2025 07:47 AM

What Daryl said. Great courses and people. Only been able to make it twice so far but hopefully make it this year.

A Model 21 32" Trap gun won the 12 gauge Hammerless event last year. Just sayin'. :)

matt koepnick 01-13-2025 08:45 AM

We started looking at accommodations and were looking for general advice for places to stay somewhat nearby. Didn't know if there was a host hotel like Southern. Seems to be a kind of plan coming into fruition, especially with the Misses.. Yea!..

Harry

Harry, with all due respect if you don't like the event then don't come. Stop trying to poison the well. If you want to see "vendors" then show up at the Southern. My point is this a shoot for shooters, last time I checked the list you weren't on it. I don't come to Mike's shoot to spend money on anything else but targets and ammo. Not overpriced stuff from the aforementioned vendors.
Have a nice day.:bigbye:

Well if a choke tube is ok so will my adjustable comb on the parker...lol

Matt, Comfort Inn and Hampton Inn in Tunkhannock are 20-25 minutes away and new. Skyline Motel is in Tunkhannock and much cheaper. You can search for B&Bs or VRBO in the area too.

Only if it’s adjusted properly to begin with. 😂🤣

Daryl Corona 01-13-2025 10:27 PM

Now that the precedent has been set I should have my bespoke Fabbri back from Italy by June with it's adjustable stock, ported barrels, extended gold plated choke tubes and Hydracoil recoil reducer in time for this glorious event.

Daryl, I don’t think there will be a Team Fabbri for the Manufacturer’s Cup. :rotf::rotf:

As much as I find choke tubes to be a waste of $$, at least an adjustable comb has benefits and it is much less expensive that having a new fitted stock made for a gun. A properly fit gun with put the bbls where you need them to be, negating the need for changing chokes. Just sayin’.

Mike Koneski 01-14-2025 09:47 AM

Can’t begin to tell you how many times I’ve been asked “What chokes should I put in my gun?” before guys would go onto our course. My reply, “Choke is irrelevant, focus is important.” I don’t see guys changing them from one station to the next very often anymore. I recommend that if someone has screw-in-chokes, LM/IM and leave them in. Excellent choke combo and it takes all the distractions out of the process.

Before I started shooting the Bullshit game (sporting clays) I was very much into open choke guns for skeet -dove - quail . I will say I liked tight choked guns for trap then and still do . However I feel a heck of a lot more comfortable with maybe to much choke then thinking I don’t have enough . I seem to shoot in a more smooth manner with a tight choked gun at sporting , if the guns open choked I tend to try and shoot to quick and jump at the bird not swing in a smooth more precise manner .

I actually shoot with two brothers who own, I think 5 Fabbri's between them. If I could talk them into coming I'm sure I could slap together a team Fabbri. :bigbye:

Kevin McCormack 01-14-2025 03:12 PM

Like Mike said, I don't see them changing chokes between stations any more. Used to love the guys with the hand-held Dremel tool-like electric choke wrenches whirring them in and out to get the teal or the rabbit at the next station. Then there were always the times when their batteries ran dead - panic at the disco!

I’ve got a friend that lives less than ten miles from me that shoots NSCA stuff and usually places in the senior class concurrents at the bigger shoots . He shoots Kolar guns and tube sets . Anyway he told me he typically shoots M/IM at everything . Granted I’m sure there are some rare instances he might change chokes but I think he said his barrels and insert tubes are normally M/IM out the gate .

matt koepnick 05-09-2025 04:42 PM

My last M21 Win came with fixed Factory Lite Mod and loose Full constrictions. I was amazed at how many birds at the clays course simply vanished when hit. And I made regular hits on birds I would miss before. Not to mention they are killer on those darn Rabbits. Made me a believer in tighter choked guns.
My old mentor Mark Douglas from local Vintagers always used IM in both barrels of his Perazzi Double, explaining there was less chance of a hole in the pattern for clays to slip thru. He generally won our shoots.
