Old standbys or new advenure?

I bit the bullet and picked up a box of 20ga bismuth loads using a Cabela's gift card I've been carrying around for almost two years. We hunt a few places in South Dakota where non-tox is required but not many; still have most of the 16ga non-tox I bought several years ago. Now deciding what to take: Fox A Grade and Sterlingworth 16's (the old standbys), or Fox A Grade and Sterlingworth 20's (the new adventure).

Without a doubt the "new adventure".:) On second thought, take one 20 and one 16.

Phil Yearout 10-31-2024 03:45 PM

Yeah; just not crazy about messing with two different sets of shells etc.

Chris Pope 10-31-2024 03:56 PM

Bring them all. And have one vest set up for 16 and the other for 20. Some days feel like 16 and some days feel like 20 when in SD...

Daryl Corona 10-31-2024 04:16 PM

Like Chris says. Last week in SD I shot a 20, a 16 and a 28. I feel bad leaving one of the girls behind.

Phil Yearout 10-31-2024 04:43 PM

You guys are no help :cuss:

allen newell 10-31-2024 05:52 PM

Take the sterly 16 and 20

Garry L Gordon 10-31-2024 07:22 PM

What Cris said! I have several vests and on trips dedicate each to a gun.

Just make sure the vests will hold all those big Kansas roosters you're going to have to tote out.

Whatever you decide, the anticipation is to be enjoyed. Post photos for those of us who must live as does the vicar.:)

I love the multiple vests concept. I’ve been using separate pockets/separate shell loops to keep 20 and 28 GA (current and RST) shells separated in the grouse woods. Heaven knows that most of us have multiple vests…….

Nope; only got one vest. I think back about my dad, and me in simpler times. Only owned one gun between us (it was his); hunting was just grab the gun and a pocket full of shells. Wonder what dad would even think about me having the opportunity to ask this question. I have an idea but…anyway the 20’s don’t get out much so maybe it’s their turn.

Chris Pope 11-01-2024 06:53 AM

It just doesn't seem fair to the folks that built those guns so many years ago to just arbitrily leave a couple of them at home...

Chris Pope 11-01-2024 06:58 AM

...and Phil, I only make this point because I'm still feeling guilty for not bringing the Parker 16 ga 0-frame to NH. It was a terrible decision on my part.

Phil Yearout 11-01-2024 08:26 AM

Well. my good wife may have provided the solution: individual small bags, one for lead shells in each gauge, one for non-tox. Grab a gun, grab a bag. Easy peasey! Now why didn't I think of that?

But the 20's enforce the rules.:):)

Phil Yearout 11-02-2024 09:28 AM

OK; y'all talked me into it. A Grade 16 and A Grade 20 are packed, along with my 16ga Stevens 5100 (rain gun) because it looks like rain up there :cuss: Taking more ammo than I'd shoot in a month!

Daryl Corona 11-02-2024 10:13 AM

No matter what you take Phil, have fun and be safe. Not a bad choice, just saying. You never want to say "I wish I had brought more ammo".
