Kingsville

The great John Dallas and I are ensconced in a little lakeside cabin off Lake Erie not far from Kingsville, Ontario tonight. We're having a drink of the brown liquor and swapping tales of duck shoots long past. The wind is howling and the season opens in a few hours. We've made it, we've suffered the long hot summer, and the finest time of the year has finally come. Maybe this wind will stir the mallards up and we'll get some shooting 'long about daylight. Maybe not, but we're here and being here is half the fun of it. John will be 81 his birthday and I'm well past the half century mark myself, it's enough sometimes to just know you're still around.

Good luck.

A glorious day in the pouring rain and howling wind.
We killed every bird we shot at, 11 mallards down and picked up. And beyond all possibility, we BOTH killed a federal banded bird with a GPS transmitter AND each had a double banded Jack Miner bird as well. That is TWO of each! Life is good boys, life is good. |
Tell us the guns.
|
Im envious I have never taken a banded bird. Sounds like a wonderful hunt.
|
There being a fair chance at geese, I'm shooting my big Parker magnum 10 gauge. John is shooting his father's late 40s vintage Model 31 Remington pump gun.
|
A banner day!

Just Excellent! I Have only ever shot 2 banded ducks and 3 banded geese. Had an opportunity to help band geese at Crex Meadows refuge in Wisconcin many years ago, a grand experience. Will you be able to get any information about the transmitter from USFWS or whoever placed the transmitter??

Great shooting
Banded birds with GPS tracking devices shot with vintage guns; it doesn't get much better than that! Congratulations on a great hunt.
 |
i am glad that you two are enjoying your hunt.
I tried to count the Northern's on the lake out front this morning. Seventy something, difficult to keep up with those swimming buggers. |
