I Remember Gracie, and it hurts every time I do.
And I remember Kathy, and I just can’t talk (write) any more. I need to stay sane.

I have lost many over the years and it never get easier.

I was given our first Border Terrier for my birthday when I was a year old . I’m 63 now and I have the fourth we’ve owned at present . The other three have moved around a bit over the years but they’re in their final resting place . My father was cremated and he had said he wanted to dig the two up that were buried and have them placed in the burial locker that contained his ashes and put the ashes of the third dog in as well . And sports fans thats right where those three are . My fourth Border has a condition that the vet says is incurable so when the time comes she’ll be cremated and go where ever I go be it here or the Philippines . What do the Marines or Seals say “we leave no one behind” , I take that view on those little dogs .

Still miss Piper our Labrador, it’ll be 3 years this November, and Belle and Copper our two German pointers, both passed the Summer of 2015.

I don't go for that Rainbow Bridge hokum, but we had to put our first Setter "Deacon Blue" down January 2, 2019. Hard to believe it'll be six years this coming January. December 29 was the last day he hunted. I guided a group of guys on that day. A few months later I guided them again and they were very shaken that Deacon was gone. He was a great dog, He taught us so much about hunting over a pointing dog.

This photo is from his final hunt, doing what he loved to do.

Seventy six years of talented bird dogs, each one with a special talent of his or her own. Penny when I was three years old, then Rusty, Feather, Ranger, Jake, Kelly, Doser, and the best, Eva. Two Irish, two English Setters, one English Pointer, two Springers, and one German Wirehair. I have always been a one dog hunter. Now I'm first time dogless at 79. It was a great life for me. I'm keeping my eyes open for the next one.

Gary, thanks for your comments. I am looking for a pointing, and or retrieving pup that is hypoallergenic. The Lovely Linda lived though a multitude of dogs, but her allergies have taken over. I want a Pudelpointer, but any pointing or retrieving pup that wouldn't affect her allergies would be great. A black poodle that knows what a bird is would also be great.

Kevin McCormack 09-09-2024 07:42 PM

Spoony and Cricket, black Lab bitches, and the incredible "Smoke". Grouse Ridge kennels orange & blue belton English setter, the "once in ten" grouse dog. They all taught me a lot more than I ever taught them. In the woods or on the marsh they are with me still.

John Albano 09-09-2024 09:52 PM

Salt, Gans, Jack, Max, Casey, Jackson, Hannah, Will, Lily and Molly. One Golden and the rest labs of varying colors. Loved them all.

Four gone in just over a year. Missy, Bell, Scout, and today Ollie. All great true hunting dogs.
The first 3 listed were between 10 and 12. The loss of Ollie today at 5 1/2 years old was completely unexpected. Very aggressive liver cancer. No treatment.
Picture of Ollies first bird and a picture taken 3 weeks ago out tuning her up for the upcoming season.

Sorry for your loss Phil. Having lost our Sadie unexpectedly at the same age I know how painful this time is for you and your family. Our prayers are with you.

Blaze, Bo Whoop, Louie, Bunny, A.H. Foxy, Ruddy, Ice, first of our pointing Labs, Timber, and Sugar, who has a non operable oversized liver and adrenal gland, and will go to Mich and Georgia if possible, and finally kiss me Kate, who is currently doing the litter business.
A few photos of recent team members. Three dog=morning banana time with Sugar, Timber and Roxy, Ice on bird, and Mom cleaning birds with project managers, Ice and Ruddy, looking on.

Pudelpointer or a birdy Standard Poodle. Any ideas?

Timothy Salgado 09-26-2024 10:40 AM

Bill,
Being a prior NAVHDA guy, I'd say going with a Pudelpointer increases your odds of ending up with a great hunting dog. I had a German Wirehaired Pointer when I was involved with NAVHDA (And a GSP) , and she was low shedding and had a shorter, tight coat. Pudelpointers coats will run the gamut from similar to a GSP to a wooly long coated Griffon or German Wirehair.

I'm in the same boat doing research to find a another hunting dog since losing my Labrador to cancer a few years ago.

I looked into Standard Poodles also, check out the websites- Versatility in Poodles- vipoodle.org, and the United Poodle Association. There wasn't much more out there that I found other than a couple breeders with supposed field lines. ( all white and apricot colored dogs) The UKC - United Kennel Club has the Standard Poodle listed in their Hunting Retriever section and has a Breed Standard posted there. They may be a resource for breeders, I didn't take it much further than that though, as I decided to come back to one of the NAVHDA recognized breeds.
I hope this helps.
Take care
Tim.

Bill Murphy 09-26-2024 12:27 PM

I also had a short coat German Wirehair, my last dog, Eva. They are not hypoallergenic even with the short coat. The Pudelpointer is represented as hypoallergenic. Thanks for the information.

Tom, that field where Ice is on a bird, would that be in the Zionsville/Macungie area? Asking for a friend. :rotf:
