Leather covered pad

5 Attachment(s)
Wanted to share some pics of the leather covered pad I just recently put together for my english hammer gun I picked up at the Southern. When I got the gun the pitch was rather extreme and wanted to slide out of my shoulder pocket. So my first order of business was to correct the pitch and put on a nice recoil pad with a bit of english "flair". This was my 3rd attempt at a leather covered pad and I'm learning something each time. If you have ever done one, you can understand why they are so expensive! Thought it turned out pretty nice and added a nice touch.

Sweet.

very nicely done John

I did one for my first hammer gun, also English

yes the effort does make you appreciate the trade's skills

That’s a superb job. Bravo!

Very nice! I'm curious how you effected the "Purdey roll" (the fine line scribed into the leather covering around the juncture of the pad with the stock). Rich Cole had a great video on YouTube of his rig (a soldering iron fixed in a jig on his vise sears the line in as he rotates the pad the radius of the stock). I use(d) a more primitive method of a creasing iron heated over a candle rest and used a straightedge to scribe the line freehand - hairy but effective and nicely finished!

Very nice John ! Put the next one on a LC Smith for Easton to shoot at next year's Southern ! Smith needs the help. Just saying for a friend.

I made a fixture that uses a small washer as a roller to go around it. I think heat would leave a more distinct line.

Very nice John, have thought about trying this. Where did you source the leather for it?

John Reed 05-19-2024 09:08 AM

Keavin there are several different sources for thin leather you can find online. This particular piece of pigskin I think I found on Etsy, and actually came from Italy. The most important part that will make the job much easier is start with a pice that is around .020" thick. This will make stretching it around the toe and heel of the pad without wrinkles much easier. Be patient and don't give up after your first attempt. Each one you do will get a little better.

Tandy has all the weights, from 1-2oz to 10-12oz. Pigskin, calveskin, cowhide and from 1/4 shoulder to full hides.

Professional looking, beautiful job!

Hobby Lobby also carries smaller pieces in very thin thicknesses appropriate for use in doing leather covered pads. They don't carry the size and thickness varieties like Tandy or Weaver, but have a nice selection of pre-dyed sizes.

St. Louis Leather has about anything one might want and they will skive down for you.
