Universal Powder - what’s a reasonable price
Have a chance to buy 4 pounds of Universal. What is the going rate? Thanks - Brett

I suspect $200 for a four pounder is at the low end of the possible price spectrum .

Craig might be on the low side but close. Check sites like Natchez, Powder Valley or Precision reloading and you will get a good idea. But nowadays I don't fret too much on price as I can't buy what I consider my custom reloads. I always say you never pay too much, just too early. Natchez has some decent deals from time to time with no hazmat and if you can find a Hodgdon powder you can use, they are a little more reasonable then Alliant.

Hodgdon Universal Clays is one of their three "Clays" powder they stopped producing some time ago. It is very rare to find it these days which may cause an increase in the price when you find it. It was announced it would not be produced for at least three years. Since then Hodgdon has come out with newer powders fueling speculation Universal Clays may never be produced again.

Unless it's a powder I already use, and it's a pet load, buying any less than a years worth, of something no longer made, hardly seems like it's worth the effort. It's prolonging the inevitable. On the other hand, if you've got one foot in the grave and the other on a banana peel, go for it.
The curse of having an engineer's mind, is laying wide eyed, in bed, running the numbers: '533 3/4 oz loads, to a bag, gets me to station 5, the 6th time around.......' Life was so much simpler when all I had to wonder about, was Who Shot JR? I like Daryl's theory of 'buy it when you see it'. |

It's not that Hodgdon stopped producing Clays, Int'l and Universal. Problem is it's going into Howitzer shells and not to the civilian market. This is why, as Daryl said, buy it when you see it. You never know when a plandemic or a conflagration or government overreach makes products scarce. The old "Ant and the Grasshopper" analogy.

I took everyone’s advice and grabbed it this morning. Appreciate everyone’s feedback! Brett

Int'l Clays, Universal Clays and Clays are pretty much "Unobtainium" Powders. Whatever the asking price is what you'll be paying. No going rate for these powders. No different than 7625 or PB.
|
Hmm, got a 5 lbs of Universal, 4 lbs of 7625, and 1 of PB--Mike are you saying this could be part of my retirement portfolio?
Sorry guys. Not for sale. |
Yes it could! Harold, if you saw how much Clays, International, Universal, PB and 7625 I have stashed away, you’d reinvest your portfolio!!
And no, it’s not for sale. That said, for the right price…… an 8 lb of Clays, PB or 7625 can be replaced with a VH 28 or .410 with 30” or 32” bbls. Just sayin’. |
