Very nice Jerry!
What level of restoration did you do to this gun? |
Thank you for the compliment, much appreciated. I restocked the gun from a blank. The forend is an original forend. The barrel blue is original. I used the correct over the grip pattern for the stock as well as the original grip cap & buttplate. I've since purchased a stock duplicator so this might be my last stock from a blank. This gun made 292 that I've restocked. I have a Fox Philadelphia Arms Company gun nearly finished now, it's the first one out of the duplicator. The gun looks exactly like a VH Parker in nearly every detail. I think out of the 292 doubles I've restocked 274 have been L.C. Smith guns. I was contacted last year about an article to run in Sporting Classics ( coming out in this next issue) but it was about my fly rods not doubles. One of the Senior editors came to the shop and did the photos and story, Bob McKinney, a really nice guy! Met his wife also, a very elegant person as well. Turns out Bob is double gun guy as well! Lot's of carry over from bamboo rods to double guns I've found. Jerry

So true! It's why I started making rods, I could not afford to buy a classic of good quality. I started commercial sales after making 50 or so rods I gave away or nearly gave away. I LOVE the Garrison and Dickerson tapers. The most requested tapers are the 8013 or 8014 Dickerson and the 209E Garrison. Also the 7613 and 7614 Dickerson are quite popular too. I fish nearly everything with a 8013 I made a few years ago. I flame them hard, they are fairly light for bamboo and pretty quick for bamboo. It's just another sickness and illness!
Was looking at the internal fitting of a Parker last week, I swear they fit the internals as carefully as they outside! Those guys were really craftsman. Jerry |
Jerry you looking for an apprentice?
Very nice work, even though its a smith :) |
Thanks John! Gotta love em' though! Jerry
im with you on gotta love them...maybe i can send you my old broken down remington hammerless 1894 b grade someday and let your new apprentice john work on it for me... charlie
I do love the Smith guns but these old hammer Parkers sure have taken a bite out of me as well! Jerr
Jerry, back when I was a pup, Martin Keane, the rod guru, used to deal in double guns. That is a great Eagle.
i dont think they made a parker of any kind that i would not give a home too..espically the big bore and the heavy frame guns and long barrel ones...and small bore and heck i love all them.. charlie

I believe Marty Keane passed away recently
Fantastic work Jerry. You wood guy's amaze me.....
Thanks again for the compliments. I think if a person has the desire and the patience that equals the ability. Jerry
I don't know,Jerry..I have two thumbs on both hands..I have trouble drawing a straight line with a ruler.I have always been envious of people that can produce something with their hands..
Bill:bigbye: |
Jerry, Thats why I use guy's like you. I have the desire.... but the patience...not so much....
I'm convinced it's not magic, it's truly patience and a desire. I'm really amazed by a bamboo fly rod when you think of those six pieces of cane glued together and whipped back and forth over and over again and the stress placed on the rod when fighting a fish. Even the tips are six strips glued together. It's pretty amazing stuff considering bamboo is actually a grass. Jerry

John, I figured Mr. Keane would be about 100 years old by now and long dead, but some of our heroes of the sixties were younger than we thought. I never met Martin Keane, but corresponed with him about shotguns he had for sale and enjoyed his catalogs of fly fishing gear up to recent times. Unfortunately, I didn't know what I was looking at. One gun I remember him offering for sale was a high condition DHE 16 bird gun for about $650. I guess I should have bought it. It seemed a bit overpriced at the time.

Bill - Did some checking with a friend who is more knowledgeable than me about fly fishing collectibles. He guesses that Marty died about two years ago
Marty Keane passed away January 30, 2009.
UP, for the discussion of Martin Keane and Jerry's flyrods.
