States that Allow Huntign with 8 guages?

Is there a list of states that allow the 8 gauge shotguns for hunting non waterfowl?
Ohio does not.

Mills Morrison 10-26-2023 12:46 PM

Last I checked, they were legal for deer and turkeys in Georgia and SC

CraigThompson 10-26-2023 12:59 PM

West by God Virginia , I’ve used two of them for tower pheasant shoots there and when I go for deer the three days before Thanksgiving I’ll have my DH 8 along . But for deer they say no buckshot only single projectiles .

CraigThompson 10-26-2023 01:00 PM

I would assume FL since Phil dumped an Osceola Turkey there .

Mark Landskov 10-26-2023 07:23 PM

A few years ago, Minnesota banned shotguns larger than 10 gauge for turkeys.

charlie cleveland 10-26-2023 08:04 PM

miss. is ok with 8 ga.except for federal birds.....charlie

Phillip Carr 10-27-2023 12:20 AM

Arizona and New Mexico also.

Jeff Elder 11-01-2023 03:07 PM

State birds only, not uncle Sams birds. They outlawed it for migratory birds in 1918

Mike Koneski 11-01-2023 04:15 PM

The Wards Auction that started today has two 50 count (shoebox) boxes of Remington Arms Co., Inc. ARROW 8-gauge NPEs --

Attachment 120372

and three rather ratty 25 count boxes of loaded ARROW 8-gauge shells. The company became Remington Arms Co., Inc. in mid-1920, after the 8-gauge was outlawed for Federal Migratory Waterfowl. I have several pieces of Remington Arms Co., Inc. ammo paper, 1921, 1923, 1925 and 1927 and none list loaded 8-gauge ammunition and only one lists 8-gauge NPEs.

Also three boxes of Winchester industrial 8-gauge shells in the auction.

Mike you sure can take a quail slam with an 8 gauge. I have shot Gambles, and Scale quail but not a Mearns.
Now you have given me an idea, maybe this year will be the slam with an 8.
I have called in coyotes and shot them.
Legally you can shoot all big game also, with the exception of a Bison.
When I petitioned AZ G&F to allow the 8 gauge I wanted to take a Gobbler. Finally this year I drew a tag, plan on filling it with my 8 gauge WC Scott SXS. Only took 12 years,to draw.

Mike Koneski 11-02-2023 07:11 AM

Phil, the plan is to head to southern AZ in January 2025 for a quail slam. Watched The Flush and they did an episode on that. All it took was AZ in January, shotguns, birds and dogs to get the wheels turning! We’d use an outfitter and his dogs. Most likely fly out too. :)

Phillip Carr 11-02-2023 07:58 AM

Mike PM me your telephone number if you want to chat about AZ quail hunting sometime.

Hmmmm kill stuff with an 8 think I’ve used three different 8’s . Also have a partial box of 8 buckshot I got from Wild Bill Joliff ! Might have to see if I can’t knock off a deer with period correct factory load !

CraigThompson 11-02-2023 09:58 AM

Don’t think I wanna pursue quail with my 8 . But I’ve got two factory original short barreled open choked 10’s I plan to use atleast once each .

$440 for both the "shoeboxes" of 8g hulls so far with a month remaining in the auction.
