8ga Results for the VC

5 Attachment(s)
We had a great time on Friday shooting the 5 stand at very long and fast targets. Mike Koneski won the event shooting an excellent 18/25. Mike was shooting a Parker GH. Second was Ken Georgi with 17/25 shooting a English boxlock. Third was Daniel Bawell shooting a Parker TL O grade with a 14/25. Three gentleman shot a 13/25, Mike Smith, Craig Larter and David deFernelmont. Other participants were Rick Simmonds, Craig Thompson and Stan Hoover.
Two new first time 8ga shooters were Daniel Bawell and Jeff Stegmeier. We had a total of 10 shooters. Thanks all for participating it was big fun. I look forward to seeing everyone at the Southern.

Thanks Stan. No lie, that was a tough 5-Stand! I think out of the 7 or 8 traps there was only one target that was inside of 40 yards.

The distance didn’t bother me as much as not being able to pick some of them up quickly :banghead:

Most shooters don’t do well with distance. I had to laugh at the delay from “boom” to break on all but one target, that incoming looper from the base of that right tower.

Just to let you guys know that I didn't set the targets. #1 and #3 were ridiculous. If this event is held there next year things will be different. Either way, great shooting guys and thanks for your efforts.

But at least you could see it. Shouldn't be a problem with 34" barrels.:)

Correct Daryl, you could see that one at 70 yards just as it cleared the tree tops

I hit that one a time or two by shooting well under it catching it falling . Actually surprised me that I hit it LOL’s !

CraigThompson 09-14-2023 04:44 PM

It is my sincere hope that the five stand at Backwoods will be more shooter friendly

Even though further away it was more friendly than 1 or 3 IMO. I had better luck with it on the way up although about everyone else shot it or shot at it falling.

I haven't scampered anywhere since I was 14. Those traps were not adjustable to throw a curl, just up and down. This ain't Rock Mountain you know.

Craig's comment about the difficulty of the Backwoods 5 stand reminded me of an important piece of side by side history. The Backwoods contribution to the Southern Side by Side 5 stand brought 32 inch full choke double guns back into shotgun games after years of being stuck in closets.

Bill I didn’t have the speed bag there . That’s for tower shoots . I’m down for five tower shoots at Prospect Hall this season and plan on shooting 10 gauge at all of them . The speed bag holds 75 of my 10 gauge loads which is about all I shoot at one of John’s tower deals .
