A Parker lifter in a game painting

Today I finally had the opportunity to view the “Duck Duck Shoot” waterfowl exhibit at the Genesee Country Village & Museum. The exhibit is in their sporting art gallery and is nearing the end of its showing term. I think it is up for another month or so.

The exhibit includes art, decoys, clothing, accessories and a number of guns. Including a punt boat with a couple of punt guns. The Parker 8g hammer gun in the exhibit is owned by our Craig Larter. It was a very enjoyable and well presented exhibit!

Anyway, one large painting in the exhibit clearly features a Parker lifter. The gun is very detailed and accurately depicted. I assume that the piece is part of the museums usual collection and not on loan.

Brian, did you note the artist's name?

Brian Dudley 05-13-2023 11:31 PM

I did not. But it was painted in the 1890s

Western NY has a very rich waterfowl tradition, we are blessed with the Finger Lakes, Lakes Ontario, Erie and many inland marshes. The GCM did a very nice depicting that tradition and featuring many local artists including Roy Mason and LB Hunt. The display runs until October.

Not to mention Lake Champlain to the east.

This looks to be the work of Richard LaBarre Goodwin. He has many similar scenes attributed to him. Many are on a door with game, gun, and satchel. He uses different firearms in his work. This is the first I have seen this painting with a lifter.

A trompe l’oeil painting. Brian can tell you what that is from his art school background🎨

You are correct. When I enlarge the original photos on my phone, I can see that is the name.
