8Ga 5 Stand Competition-Southern

There will be an 8ga shooters 5 stand competition on Friday, April 28 at 9:30 am sharp at the Southern. The shooting competition will take place at the Dove Field Practice 5 Stand. This is not an official Southern event, there is no sign-up. You can pay for your targets right at the 5 Stand. 25 targets with 5 two shot singles so bring a minimum of 30 shells. No practice rounds with your 8ga before the event, please. Nice trophy awarded for the high score. In case of a tie, the longest run or a sudden death shoot-off if required. Any questions contact Craig Larter by PM or superfoxcollector@gmail.com

TTT, a little over three weeks before the fun begins. Looking forward to a good turn out and seeing many old friends.

Stan Hoover 04-04-2023 12:13 AM

Thanks Craig for taking the lead again for the 8 gauge fanatics.

Can’t wait to see everyone at Deep River again and shoot the big guns, from what I hear, we have a few new converts:)

Stan

Oh you’re talking about on the course . Other than possibly Drakes on Wednesday I don’t plan on shooting anything other than in the dove field .

Mike Koneski 04-05-2023 02:24 PM

We'll shoot a warm up round at Drake on Wednesday. The rest of the time will be on the dove field and the course at Deep River.

I'm pretty sure there's enough to go around so that each has one:corn:

True fact, I know a fellow who we'll call a gentleman, he had 4 - 8 gauges, I think he has since thinned the herd, so to speak:rotf:

If it’s the fellow I’m thinking of he hit Sanford last year with all four and left with :cool:three . Think he got lightened of another in January and last I heard there was a deal pending on the third one . But I believe I heard him say the DH would stay for the duration

If you own an 8ga Parker and would like to shoot the 5 stand but don't have ammo, PM me and I may be able to help out. Join in the fun, I guarantee you will have a big smile on your face. Craig Larter

I don’t have one but I want one. Haha. Would love to have a nice shooter. It’s on my list for the southern.

Jay Oliver 04-06-2023 12:28 PM

I need to stop messing around and get an 8ga. Parker as well. I have let a few slip away that I wished I had bought now...

Mike Koneski 04-06-2023 11:21 PM

Dan and Craig, just announced by Rick Hemingway is he will have two 5-Stands ready to roll Wednesday AM. 20 & 16 Challenge plus a 12g event and a pump gun event. That said, David, Dave and I will be at DR on Wednesday.

Rick said there is no 10g Challenge planned, so y’all can cross that off your list. (My words, not his)

So now we can shoot for score Wednesday ? With no 10 gauge that’ll reduce my bring shoot guns by atleast one .

I will be there Friday morning. I just bought a 8ga hammer gun from a member. I will pick it up and be shooting it for the first time Friday morning. I did already have 50 Track of the Wolf brass 8ga. 3 1/4" Shells and an original Parker 8 gauge caper.

Looking forward to being part of the 8 gauge club and the shoot on Friday morning.

As for loads, I am getting to work with 2 different recipes: I am going to try: 5 1/2 drams of 2F and 1 3/4oz and 6drams of 2F and 2oz of shot. It's a heavy 7 frame gun...I can't wait!

Mills Morrison 04-08-2023 04:23 PM

Congratulations Jay and welcome to the club!

You’re priming with large rifle primers or large rifle magnum primers ?

Mike Koneski 04-08-2023 05:59 PM

I think you’ll be the only guy shooting BP in that event! Did you’re there Sunday, shoot the BP event with that gun. I think it begins at 1:00? We’ll probably be on the road already so I may bring some of my BP shells just in case we’re still there.

Jay Oliver 04-08-2023 07:13 PM

Those are Wincheter large pistol primers, which should be fine with 2F. I did order some felt wad material as that is better than the fiber wads(though I use both).

I will be well on the road Sunday as well. I think I have shot that event in the past when it was on a Thursday. Can't wait to be a part of this!

Stan Hoover 04-08-2023 08:10 PM

Congratulations Jay,
I look forward to comparing to 7 frame Hammer Guns, I assume yours is a top lever??

Looking forward to watching you shoot those black powder loads, I just haven't warmed up to the idea of shooting blackpowder yet, although I do now have the cases.

Stan

Is your lifter a five or six frame ?

Jay Oliver 04-08-2023 10:19 PM

Stan it will be nice to finally meet you. The 8 gauge I am buying is a top lever. I could see adding a lifter at some point :)

Craig,

My lifter is a 7 frame.

Look forward to meeting you also Jay,
I could spot you some light 1 1/2 oz loads for the Friday morning event if you would like to save your BP loads for the black powder specific event.

Stan

Craig Larter 04-09-2023 07:01 AM
