28ga Two Barrel Set
3 Attachment(s)
A friend of a friend has a Repro 28ga 2 barrel set he wants to sell. I’ve attached a couple of pictures. I’m interested in buying the gun. I haven’t seen them in person but will in a couple of weeks.
From what you see in the pictures what would the approximate value be? I’m seeing listed prices in the range of $9k on auction sites. Best, Brett |
Guns being offered for sale should be in the Members only section with a price being asked
|
Sorry I wasn’t clear. I’m interested in buying the gun and want to get some advice on what a fair price might be from the experts here.
I just changed the original post to make that clear. Best, Brett |
Handsome piece of wood!
What are the barrel lengths and their respective chokes? . |
Dean,
26” IC/M 28” M/F kind of looks like burl. I like the configuration also; SG/DT/Splinter.. Brett |
I may be all wet but IMO that $9k is a hopeful figure. If I were wanting to buy it I would offer $7,500 - $8,000. But that’s just me…
. |
It’s kind of hard to put a value on the second set of barrels. I guess it’s what the market will bear.
|
If I were in the market for a two-barrel sed 28 gauge Repro I would want to find one in Q1 & Q2 and Mod & Full.
. |
Good point. I would be tempted to open the chokes on the longer barrel set, honestly.
|
I wouldn't open the chokes on that gun, it would diminish the value by $1,000
. |
Ouch!

I think prices have jumped way up from the 6500.00 that was the norm pre inflation for a nice two barrel set. I might pay 7K if I wanted it and I think that is all the money!, and that would depend on the chokes, stock dimensions and such. The pictured gun is very nice and if stocked correctly a guy may spend 7500.00 and still be happy. Opening chokes if properly done does not affect value of the used guns that much. I feel the only choke that really needs cutting is the full as they were way over choked from the factory at .033-.038 I had my 28" barrels opened from .014/.033 to a usable .003/.020 = Skeet 1 and full. When grouse hunting, I like a 28gauge gun with 28" barrels and grouse chokes. If you want a Skeus parker for hunting that has that over choke barrel, this is what needs to happen. Note: the barrel flat is marked full, recut to .020 is still FULL.....(-: Thanks all, SXS Ohio
|
I’m going to have Eyster open my .035 “full” barrel to around .020 this spring, and I thought the same thing, it’s still basically full choke…
|
Falling into the FWIW category, there was a 28 gauge in yesterday's auction with Beavertail forearm, DT, choked Q1 and Q2 with 26" barrels in case that hammered for 7K, plus $1,400 for the BP. $8400 total.

Tom - that’s just like the one I’m putting together with the straight stock I bought from Brian Dudley.
But mine will have both the SG and the PG for future generations to choose from… It’s going to be willed to my granddaughters. I had purchased the gun for Kathy. With the BTFE and the PG she loved it and was learning to shoot with it. I had used her Q1 & Q2 barrels and BTFE coupled with my DT and SG back end for some of my VT bird hunting. I will be sending both stocks to Geoffroy Gournet for engraving of the initial ovals with the following instructions. . |
Tom, yesterday's auction was a strange situation with "A rich man and his money are soon parted." I hesitate to use the word fool, but the price was a couple thousand too high for a 26" Repro. The previous posters' advice is well chosen. However, the pictured gun is beyond exceptional in features as well as wood.

I edited my last post.

There is what appears to be a pretty nice 2 barrel set 28ga on GB right now, starting price $6800, Buy it Now $7100........ If that helps at all.
|
Joe, would you please post a link or the auction number? I can’t seem to find it on GB..
Best, Brett |

The one you are looking at, is a straight grip, two trigger gun... Which, IMHO is more desireable than the PG stocked single trigger I just posted, so take that into consideration. Oh, and the one I posted appears to be beavertail forearm, I'd definetly call before buying that one, as he didn't post dimensions, or barrel configs. but, looks like a nice gun.
|
Joe,
Agree on all counts. I’m always surprised at listings that don’t include basic info like choke constrictions and stock dimensions! Best, Brett |
That gunbroker gun is beyond nice. All my Repros have double triggers but this one would tempt me.
|
Has anybody called them to ask for the chokes and other specs?
I just called and got the indoor range. The gun store is closed today but will open tomorrow at 10 a.m. . |
Look @ picture 5 half way up the barrel next to center rib; looks like big spot of bluing loss
|
I sent a message to the seller via Gunbroker asking about chokes and stock dimentions. His response was messy but from what I can gather the 26” barrels are Q1/Q2 and the 28” barrels are M/F. LOP is 14in.
|
I emailed the seller asking for details & about photo #5 showing bluing damage on the bottom of the 28" barrel. I asked 3 times for a photo of this area. He did answer my other questions, but would not send me a picture of the questioned area.
|
No bueno!

Look at it this way: You’re buying a 2-bbl. set for 2-bbl. set money and diminishing your value for the other set of barrels to near nothing. I believe it’s unwise to pay 2-bbl. money and get a 1-bbl. set of value out of it. I love the orig. M/F chokes on my 2-bbl. set when shooting 5-Stand — lead those 50 yard high crossers by a canoe length and watch ‘em go “POOF”. |
Looked at the photo of the barrels and to my eye it seems to be more serious than a bluing blemish. I am no expert by any means but it appears to be a fault in the rib that an attempt was made to correct. Would have to see in person but seller says sale final and that raises another flag. This is in photo #6 as i count them, on the underside of the barrels by the rib.

Those chokes make that gun far more desirable to me!! . |

Definitely worth further investigation! If he won’t provide better more detailed pictures of this area I would steer far away from it… especially with no possibility of returning the gun.
. |
Expanding the photo from Deans post it looks like a rib problem and an attempt to add filler to a gap of some sort.
|
Okay fellas , I put this gun om my watch list the day it was listed and I have never had any dealings with this seller but just a Heads Up ,there are now two of these listed on his site ,but they sure look like the same gun to me ! If you look up Gun Broker Item # 969657115 you will see it has seven days left , then if you look up item# 969167948 you will see it has 4 days left but both guns have the same flaw in the bottom rib !!!! Is it just me or is something fishy about this auction ????
|
No, it's not just you Russ!
. |
Very fishy
|
I would steer away for sure. While his ratings show as being good, if you deep dive you will find some bad ones.

I saw the gun from my original post today. The “case coloring” is mostly worn off the receiver and on the forearm latch. The stock has marks from handling/hunting and one fairly deep nick near the stock oval. The finish on the buttstock is “rippled” for lack of a better term. The underlying wood appears to be burl and may have shrunken/changed shape over time.
Otherwise very nice. Long barrels are choked f/m, short barrels m/ic. Stock is 14.25, 1.5, 2.25. With a slip on pad it fits me well enough. I’m kind of inclined to pass. What would case coloring from Turnbull cost, approximately? Does anyone know if the stock finish could be improved without completely stripping? All ideas welcome! |
