Hammer gun weight
Are hammer guns generally heavier than hammer less guns? I picked up a grade II top lever that comes in at 8 lbs, letter confirms the weight. What I find interesting is it’s on a 1 frame, 30 inch barrels with unstruck barrel weight at 3.1. Seems like a lot of weight.

Yes, 8lbs for a 1 frame gun is very heavy.
Not that it could not happen. I once saw a 2 frame 12g gun with a cannon breech that weighed more than most 3 frame guns. Over 10 lbs. |
That’s wild, I’ll have to check the stock to see if it’s weighted.
|
how does it balance?
|
Typical Parker balance, right at the hinge. The weight seems to be centered. I’ll be coming around in Feb. I’ll let you know and I’ll bring it with me.

I have a 1-frame 12/30 T/A hammergun that currently weighs 7.54 lbs. that has had no alterations whatever other than some very professional refinishing. I can’t imagine it has lost nearly 1/2 lb. of moisture in the wood…

This is mine, interesting dates and serial numbers....... hmmm. Yours must have been sitting awhile. C grades are very nice? I'll get an actual physical weight, I got a feeling it's 8lbs or over.
Parker shotgun, serial number 44446, was completed on March 21, 1884. According to Parker Bros. Stock Book No. 16, it was a Quality G, Top Action Hammer Gun, 12-gauge. It featured Damascus steel barrels with a length of 30 inches. Its stock configuration was a pistol grip. According to Parker Bros. Stock Book No. 16, its specifications were: Length of Pull: 14 1/4”, Drop at Heel: 2 1/2”, Weight: 8 pounds. The chokes were patterned RH full and LH full. |

That's the truth! I researched the gentleman who originally ordered mine and I found this newspaper clipping on him... . |
My Grade 2 12 letters at 9.6lbs. It’s on a #2 frame.
|
Wow Ed - that IS heavy!!

The barrels are stupendous
|
The barrels for my heavy 12-gauge, Grade 2, 2-frame, hammerless are stamped 58. A lot of the 2-frame 12-gauges I've checked are in the 315 to 43 range

Do you have a letter on that one Dave?

I have a 12 gauge TA #1 frame grade 0 hammer gun with 32" twist barrels that weighs 8lbs. 4 oz. It does feel a touch muzzle heavy, but it is a great shooter and fits me well.

Today I’m using a Grade 2 three frame 10 gauge with 32” barrels at a semi local tower shoot . The gun was restocked with a straight grip before I acquired it with very dense American walnut and weighs about 10 1/2 pounds . It’ll most likely be used for the hammer challenge at Sanford and quite possibly the 10 gauge challenge . Gun has if memory serves 1 1/4” at the comb and 1 1/2” at the heel . I do fairly well with it if I have my head screwed on correctly .

That's neat! I grew up about 5-10 minutes from Seisholtsville.
