40 mph winds and lots of quail. They turn with the wind and are gone . A great time as usual . Tom Wooden , Mike Franzen, Russ Lindsay and me.

Mike Franzen finishing a plate of calf fries .

A pair of 24 “ guns , 12 and 20 ga.

Dogs too tired to eat.

Great pics Bruce and thanks for sharing your hunt!

Aaron Beck 12-12-2022 04:30 PM

Awesome. would like to know more about the short barreled guns.

Bruce Day 12-12-2022 05:32 PM

TPS has a list of 24” guns. There are not many . Some like them , others do not . They do best when you need to swing fast and are in heavy brush.

Aaron Beck 12-12-2022 06:58 PM

That sounds like the daily condition. If they are factory they must balance correctly.

Mike Franzen 12-14-2022 12:42 PM

Both guns are are factory correct barrels. TPS indicates one 24” 12 gauge being manufactured. The one pictured is 30,000 serial numbers earlier and surfaced just a few years ago. It’s a VH, 1 frame, made in 1903 choked IC and LM. The other gun is a beautiful DH 20 gauge that belongs to Bruce. He can tell you more about it but it’s a straight quail killer in his hands.
PS … I’m not entirely sure what calf fries are but they taste really good.

Garry L Gordon 12-14-2022 02:51 PM

I’ve seen the good Mr. Franzen’s short barreled gun and it’s a beauty…and will kill quail.

GunnerGrilli 12-15-2022 11:30 AM

Great hunt guys, thanks for sharing!!! Appreciate the pics. Well done.

Thanks,

Bobby

This is one of my favorite photos from some years ago . New Lewellin setter pup Fielder , almost 6 months old, first quail hunt , first day . Stop the truck to get the guns out, let the dogs out, the pup goes on point and holds . Can’t be , she doesn’t know what she is doing but Bert backs hard.

Step up and a big covey flushes.

A fabulous memory-pic Bruce!

My Gracie did the very same thing at 5 months on a VT grouse... and she retrieved it!

You don’t see many “out of the box” savant pups. I’ve had one in 30+ years. I’ll bet that pup and you had some memorable days.

So you run a setter and a pointer together? Very cool! Must be amazing to watch.

Bruce Day 12-16-2022 01:40 PM

Yes. They run well together and do not compete.

PGCA Pres Wooden is competitive . If Russ was going to retrieve , Tom was also .

Russ was shooting an 1890’s PH 20 with laminated barrels. A rare gun .

Garry L Gordon 12-16-2022 09:21 PM

Good to see they’re both well broke. I hope they weren’t hard mouthed. :)

I love my 24" PHE 16 for shooting over pointers, especially in hvy cover. Nice hunt Bruce!

They weren’t hard to break to hunt dead. We took them to the buffet at Kentucky Fried Chicken and told them to find the wings. After a couple trips they were almost ready. They still have a tendency to eat the bird if they think no one is watching.

Aaron Beck 12-19-2022 04:59 PM

if you live in Alaska do you need a bush plane like a car and a road grader like a ride on mower?

Richard Flanders 12-19-2022 05:15 PM

No... look to the left of my plane.... you need TWO graders!!

Aaron Beck 12-19-2022 05:35 PM

one for the fairways, one for the greens.

Jim Beilke 12-19-2022 09:39 PM

A man can't have too many road graders
