The Rifleman

The Rifleman, starring Chuck Connors. Season one, episode 22, The Boarding House. Written and directed by Sam Peckinpah, 1959.

In one scene, the bartender pulls out a sawed off shotgun from behind the bar. It’s a Parker lifter. Would love to know where that prop is now.

Richard Flanders 10-01-2022 12:26 PM

I"ve seen that one. Interesting tidbit: Chuck Connor's real name is "Kevin Aloysius." And he played major league baseball and in the NBA. Pretty talented guy!

Dean Romig 10-01-2022 12:54 PM

Connors looked like he could really park a baseball!!

At 6'5", I'd guess so! What a great show that is. I watch it all the time here and never tire of it.

Bill Davis 10-01-2022 01:32 PM

I agree! An excellent show. Chucks been gone a long time. Johnny Crawford, who played his son Mark on the show, passed away earlier this year at age 76 I believe.

Paw - Paw watch out Paw!!

I had a Chuck Conners “Cowboy in Africa” lunchbox when in the first or second grade . Think that show was only produced one or two years .

Here are pictures of probably the same gun when Lee Van Cleef took it away from Micah in episode 26 of season 1.

Mills Morrison 10-01-2022 06:23 PM

I wonder if it is the same one used by Kevin Costner in Wyatt Earp?

Mike Franzen 10-01-2022 06:40 PM

Use this to answer gun queries used in movies , TV , etc.

As Richard said, Chuck Connors played pro basketball too.

I believe that shotgun sold on GunBroker last year. It was the factory original one, with a 15" LOP and original barrels.

Back in my Las Vegas Stagehand days, I worked around stage props daily. Never any firearms, but lots'a other cool stuff.
A coworker whose dad worked on movie sets back in the 50s somehow ended up with one of the M1 Garands used in the musical "South Pacific". Nothing nefarious, they just gave it to him at the end of production.
I can tell you from first hand experience that the M1 worked just fine.
BTW, that spring powered clip springing out on the last shot will get your attention!

randall rosenthal 10-03-2022 02:20 PM

well ...i loved "the rifleman" but my 96 year old mom watches a few hours of "gun smoke" every day and loves james arness (great surfer...his son was world champ)......one day she asked me if i ever shot a gun or rode a horse......

Arthur Shaffer 10-03-2022 03:12 PM

Just remember the correct answer to every single question on the SNL Spanish game show "Que es Mucho Macho?":

{Insert Name} es Macho.. but LLoyd Bridges es Mucho Macho!

"sea hunt" first episode mike nelson rescues a downed jet fighter pilot under water. amazing what you remember for 60 years and what you forget in a day! haha...going a little far afield here....sorry.

I recall an episode where in a demonstration of his shooting prowess
ol' Luke shoots the phineals from the "Madera House" street sign.:draw:

Hopefully, in the hotel room behind the sign were a bunch of bad guys
needing to be taken care of and not a couple of weary travelers.

Parkers in the movies

Just running off memory, but I believe that another Parker shows up in the original ' Monte Walsh ' with Lee Marvin. It is a good picture and I highly recommend it to all the lovers of the older style westerns. M

I just watched an episode of the Rifleman that included "Little Joe Cartwright" - Michael Landon(birth name: Eugene Maurice Orowitz!) - as a bank robber! Turns out it was episode #3 of the Rifleman from 1958 and before Bonanza started in 1959. Definitely the earliest episode I've seen. He was in another episode(#18?) of the Rifleman in 1959.

todd allen 10-10-2022 09:36 PM

Have you seen the episode where the Rifleman kills Sammy Davis jr?

There was also an episode in season 1 which featured Hoss, Dan Blocker, I think it was called "The Sister".

Richard Flanders 10-11-2022 01:01 PM

I have seen that one with Sammy D Jr, a while back, but I remember it vaguely and was surprised to see him on the show. I've seen the one with Hoss also

calvin humburg 10-11-2022 04:31 PM

Yup, seen him on all in the family the other day too. Chucks ability with that 92 is astonishing.

Dean Romig 10-11-2022 05:10 PM

Hi Calvin - It's been quite a while - Good to see you back!

 You most definitely do Calvin!

Bill Murphy 10-12-2022 04:35 PM

Dan Blocker was a race car owner. My grade school buddy, grade one to high school, Michael Sheridan, was his partner in the racecar business. They both died very early in their potential lifetimes.

charlie cleveland 10-12-2022 05:02 PM

heh calvin make that two friends you have...charlie

Here is the Parker lifter Micah used in season 1, episode 4 of The Rifleman. It sure would be nice to own it today!

Stan Hillis 01-17-2023 09:47 PM

I would like to see the Sharps that Burt Lancaster used in Valdez Is Coming to shoot several hombres off horseback at nearly 1000 yds.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Re2K_wql6hc&t=25s

Another I'd like to see is the double shotgun used by Viggo Mortensen (Everett Hitch) in Appaloosa. Great western movie, BTW. It was a 12 ga. that was sleeved to look like an 8 ga., by the movie's armorer.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Ep5QLIy96M

Two dang good westerns, if I do say so myself.

Bill Murphy 01-18-2023 08:34 AM

Yeah, Calvin, it was Dan Blocker, the Bonanza star, that shared ownership of race cars with my childhood buddy, Michael Sheridan. They had garage space in Kensington, Maryland in a place called "Gasoline Alley". Mike and Dan were both about the same size, so it is hard to believe that they could sit an open wheel one seater. Mike was quite the mechanic and I suppose Dan Blocker was the money behind the partnership.

John Allen 01-18-2023 10:24 AM

When I first started in the gun business one of my mentors was Don Criswell. He was a CPA and handled accounts for many of the Hollywood production companies. He would sell or lease guns to them with a buy back option. If you look closely at shows like Andy Griffith you will see Winchester model 21s,Parkers and great lever actions on the racks behind the desk.

Dean Romig 01-18-2023 11:14 AM

I've seen those Mayberry guns John, every time I see that show.

Great American values in that show...
