Question about engravings

Hello all!

Hope everyone is well. I haven't posted in a while, although I've been checking in every so often.

I'm wondering if anyone could tell me if gold engraving on a Single Barrel Trap SC grade is strictly a custom embellishment done later or if it was even common to do so. It's only one bird underneath that is embellished. It's a 1926.

Any info would be appreciated! Thanks in advance :)

Kerilynn

The SC with a single pigeon on the bottom of the receiver is the standard factory engraving pattern until the end of production. Very early SC grades from the introduction in 1917 for awhile were engraved in all scroll with no birds.

No, gold applied to Parker guns was reserved to the very highest grades and even so, it was usually by special order.

However, Dave Suponski has a SC with single gold birds on the sides and possibly one on the floor plate but I don’t know if this is documented as factory work.

Dave could answer this a bit better than I can.

Perhaps a Letter might tell the tail.

This upgraded SAA (originally an SC) features a gold bird on the bottom of the frame. Compared with a Meriden SC and an Ilion SC.

Yes! That is what it looks like :)

John's upgraded SAA is like mine, a DelGrego upgrade that used the outline of the SC grade pigeon to create the gold inlay. Only one or two SAA grade guns were made by Parker or Remington, so we really don't know what they look like. As far as I know, none were pictured in any book or catalog.

You guys are the best; I knew you'd have the info- Thanks everyone. I'll order a letter, as well. I just didn't know if this was worth investigating. I don't know anything about single barrels. This is fun :)

I believe this SC on the end with the gold birds is Dave Suponski's.

Triple-click on the image for full magnification.

Oh my word! That’s just an amazing image all around. But yes, I see what you mean about the birds on the side. Just beautiful. Thank you

Here's a pic.

Very nice. I’m going to say that it’s an aftermarket embellishment but you never know. Get the letter.

Chuck Bishop 09-19-2022 08:53 PM

A letter won't tell you anything about engraving since only the stock book would be available for this gun

Well that's good to know- thank you-

Dean Romig 09-19-2022 10:18 PM

Chuck would certainly know. Maybe there could be G&H records.

K, your gun does not appear to be an upgrade to a grade higher than SC, just a standard SC engraving with an inlaid gold pigeon. Your gun is beautiful. Can we see the whole gun with wood showing?

I will definitely send more pics. I don’t have it yet, it’s in transit but I’m sure I have a couple when I get home 😊

That’s amazing coloration on the floor plate. I’m looking forward to seeing more pics of the rest of the gun. I think you might have something special.

Bill, there are two pictures of SAA 230784 in my article “The ABC’s of Parker Single Barrel Trap Guns.” Volume 27, issue 3, Autumn 2020. No gold inlays.

Here are the pics of the SAA.

John, were you ever able to get a letter on that gun? We don’t have records on it (missing book - I had 230760 ) but I was thinking G&H or A&Fco.

John Davis 10-14-2022 04:09 PM

Dean, I have not independently verified the grade or originality of this gun. However, the pictures and identification of the gun were provided to me by a highly respected and reliable source. I will say it is similar to my SA but more tightly engraved and with the additional engraving of the breech/chamber area of the barrel.

GunnerGrilli 10-14-2022 06:48 PM

That SAA is gorgeous!!!!

Thanks for sharing John.

Thanks,

Dean Romig 10-14-2022 09:14 PM

Some day I’ll hold that one in my hands and will dnjoy doing so.
