8ga Shooters attending the Southern group gathering

If you would enjoy shooting your 8ga with other enthursiasts come join our group on Friday at the practice 5 stand, 10am. Rick Hemmingway has blocked out time for our gathering. If you plan to participate please PM or email me at superfoxcollector@gmail.com so I can give Rick an idea of the time required. 30 targets This will be BIG! Thanks Craig

CraigThompson 03-27-2022 04:28 AM

That gives me enough time I hope to shoot one of the 10 gauge guns before the 8 gauge .

charlie cleveland 03-27-2022 11:38 AM

please up date us on this shoot when it happens...I can not make it there but am sure interested in all 8 ga things...charlie

Craig Larter 03-28-2022 05:41 PM

If you personally own a 8ga Parker and would enjoy shooting the 5 stand, but do not have ammo, contact me and I should be able to help out. Craig

I talked with a guy on the Castboolits forum the other day . He bought Ernie Hausemanns 8 gauge Bonehill and I told him about this event in Sanford and he said you’d already told him about it and planned on attending .

I actually shared the post with him, knowing George is an avid 8 guage fan.

This’ll be my second time there to shoot . I did snag a ride on a friends plane a few years back and went around looking for about five hours then we flew back to Virginia . And yes sir look forward to meeting you !

CraigThompson 03-30-2022 03:35 AM

I’m watching James Garner in a movie called “Streets of Laredo” in this movie Charles Martin Smith carries a double 8 gauge . The gun is a Holland and Holland 8 bore Paradox hammer gun with a Jones underlever .

Mike Franzen 03-30-2022 04:21 AM

I have never had the pleasure of shooting an 8 gauge but it is something I would like to do.

John Davis 03-30-2022 07:56 AM

I shot the event the first year with one of the Parker 8 gauges made available for loan. It was great fun but a bit intimidating to shoot a gun that’s bigger than you are.

JAMES HALL 03-30-2022 03:25 PM

And it spun you around like a top. You got a hold of some of them heavy loads.

Mike Koneski 03-30-2022 05:34 PM

Next on my agenda is an 8 bore Parker. That will complete the ensemble. :rotf:

That’s what you say now

Craig Larter 03-31-2022 07:35 AM

We have made a few changes to the 8ga 5 stand shoot. Now you can shoot the 5 stand either Friday or Saturday until noon for score. A trophy will be awared for the high score, only your first round will be used to determine high score for the trophy. We still plan to have the group shoot on Friday at 10am.

Will this be a register at the clubhouse event or an event that’s handled at the 5 stand table ?

True, true, true. When is the ensemble ever complete? Seems to be in a constant state of flux. Just sayin'.

Loading some 1 1/2 ounce today with Clays and #7 1/2 and five red beans as filler

Craig Larter 03-31-2022 01:35 PM

Please note the time change at the request of Deep River---Friday and Saturday until noon. No registration required just tell the 5 stand score keeper your shooting a 8ga for score.

charlie cleveland 03-31-2022 09:04 PM

nice light loads....charlie

I wonder if you could use a 1/4" fiber wad or card under the sp8 wad then with the 1.5oz loads all the shot would be contained inside the wad? I havnt played around with any of the 1.5oz loads since I dont have any powder besides Bluedot.

The object here is to use something that’s simple as long as it works . And using the beans as a filler is simpler and quicker than fooling with card spacers .

Bill Murphy 04-18-2022 12:11 PM

I will be there to shoot my eight on the five stand. I shot 50 five stand birds with my lightweight DH eight at our club on Sunday with some 7/8 ounce 12 gauge loads out of chamber inserts. The 7/8 ounce loads seemed to catch the eight gauge chokes because I hit some long birds. I can't even catch up with my 12 gauge loading, so my eight gauge loads are a bit in the future. It will be nice when Morris gets the eight gauge project underway.

keavin nelson 04-19-2022 10:28 AM

Bill
where did you find the 8 to 12ga chamber inserts, nice idea if they work ok.

Bill Murphy 04-19-2022 11:26 AM

All of my eight gauge chamber inserts were hand made by a person who no longer makes them. I don't know how to find eight gauge inserts now. Someone should make them now, considering the eight gauge interest.

charlie cleveland 04-19-2022 01:50 PM

I ve seen them on ebay from time to time....gauge mates use to make and sell them....charlie

charlie cleveland 04-19-2022 01:58 PM

bill that light weight 8 ga is almost like cheating..ha good luck with the shooting I wish I could be there with my short barrel lifter 8 ga 27 1/4 inches...who ever cut the barrels really done a good job on it...the keels look factory done it....nice scatter gun....charlie

Louis Rotelli 04-19-2022 04:29 PM

I will be at the southern and would seriously consider making inserts if there is enough interest. I will also have my dent removing tool which is guaranteed not to bulge a bbl. and various parts for sale

Craig Larter 04-19-2022 04:45 PM

Louis: I would buy a two pair of 8ga to 10ga inserts sized for a Parker 8g chamber. Craig Larter

Bill Murphy 04-19-2022 05:17 PM

Lou, for your information, an 8 to 12 insert doesn't have to be made of steel. I have a pair made of brass. Of course, an 8 to 10 insert is too thin to be made of brass.

You’ll have a table under one of the tents or ? I’d be up for a pair of 8 to 10 2 7/8” as well as a pair of 8 to 12 . If you’re here Thursday I’ll have plenty time to talk to you .

Louis Rotelli 04-20-2022 10:50 AM

I do not have a table but I will be there Fri / Sat. I will be around the Parker / LC tent area
most of the time. If I get enough interest I will start making them. Bill if you can bring me one of the ones you had made I'd appreciate it

Allen Peterson 04-20-2022 02:14 PM

I would like a pair for my big Enos James double 8. I will look for you.

Bill Murphy 04-20-2022 06:24 PM

Lou, I will have a pair of steel ones in my DH 8 gauge Friday morning.

8 Gauge Event

We held the 8 gauge event at the Southern as planned, it was a hoot and we had quite a few spectators.

However, one of our own here, Craig Thompson really had a look of determination in his eye and he outshot the group with a score of 28 out of 30 targets.

Congratulations Craig, you made it look easy!!

Thank you sir !

John Davis 04-24-2022 07:03 AM

Congratulations Craig! Great shooting.

Dan Steingraber 04-24-2022 02:01 PM

That's great shooting.

Craig Larter 04-24-2022 02:32 PM

A big shout out to Stan Hoover for buying the 8ga trophy from his own funds, thanks. Big thanks to all that participated and Rick Hemmingway from Deep River. The 5 stands ran flawless and everyone shot very well. We had 7 shooters total, 5 Parkers and two British 8's. Hopefully we can encourage more 8ga gun owners to participate in the future especially our LC Smith and Lefever brothers. It was really big fun and it made everyone laugh watching target after target black ball.
