How many rounds a year do you shoot?
The thread on the EPA ban of lead shot on depredation permits has me wondering what will the effect be on us as shooters and collectors of old double guns. Some folks who don't shoot much obviously will not be affected as much, others who shoot a lot will be. My sense is most people who have some classic doubles whether it is a Parker or Fox, Elsie etc will not be affected that much and will pursue their quarry with bismuth, nice shot etc. Thus prices of classic doubles may not be all that affected.
Me - 3000 - 4000 rounds of lead annually on clay pigeons. Another 1000 rounds of lead for hunting, mostly crows and a few on pheasant. About 150 non-tox rounds on waterfowl. So how much shooting do you do with lead shot? |
I'm about 1200 - 1500 rounds on skeet and SC with a few rounds of trap in the mix. I take less than 100 shots at wild game per year.
I would shoot a lot less skeet and SC if the price of ammo escalated to $1 per shell, that's for sure... but it wouldn't affect my hunting ammo expenditures. |
I average about 2500 rounds a year on the clay games and maybe 75 on game between upland and stocked birds. I would hurt to have to shoot a lead alternative.....:banghead:
Let me correct this. I checked my calender because I keep track..Total targets in 2010 was 4,625 and add a few hundred more for Danny and now it would REALLY hurt.. |
Last year I shot about 6300 just in registered skeet, not counting some practice. Thats a lot of reloading!!!!!
|
Based on my use of primers and shot I estimate as many as 4000 rounds per year at targets. I might slow down to half that during a year when I'm busy with other priorities...
In a good year I shoot perhaps 100 rounds at waterfowl and maybe 50 at upland birds. Mark |
I would like to hear from some of our hot shots on this question. We know who they are. How about Mark Conrad, Doctor Truit, J.D. Shank, Smith guy Reverend Charles Brooks, Fox guys Mike Campbell, Frank "Silvers". I used to shoot more than ten thousand a year until I lost the sight of my right eye, only a fraction of that now. How about it, guys, come clean.

3,600 just clays alone..Bill

I shoot about 4,000 a year at sporting clays (I shot about 500 a week while in Italy 40 years ago and was a fairly good shot then. I just don't shoot enough to get good again.) I get invited to about a dozen dove hunts a year and will shoot about 14 boxes of of shells. I don't get the wildfowl shooting I would like so I doubt I shoot 25 nontox a year.

I'd say I shoot around 500-750 rounds a year at ducks and geese. I know that seems a lot but when your season come in the 3rd week of September and doesn't go out till the 2nd week of January, you hunt at least three days a week, in a good area....
Other game maybe 200 rounds a year. That counts doves, squirrels, barn pigeons, that kinda thing. My clay shooting is way down there in maybe the 500 cartridge range. Some years more, but that's probably average. If I'd shoot clays more I probably wouldn't shoot up so many shells at ducks! Destry |
4,000 to 5,000 a year as a guess. Almost all at clays of some kind or another. Some Doves, some Pheasant. Used to hunt a lot of Prairie Chicken/Grouse, but not so much any more.
Also like to try my hand at Quail once or twice a year. Sam Ogle, Lincoln, NE |
probably 1500 at tin cans and paper targets and about 300. at squirls crows ducks phez deer rabbit and a few quail....and a few at turkeys..most of these are reloads from the mighty 8 to the lowly 410....i belive that the new law will efect prices for all of us... charlie

In Georgia, I used to shoot two rounds of skeet twice a week with friends. Here in Maryland I can shoot out my back door but have only shot a few varmints, clays with my nieces, and vintagers, southern, and Hidden hollow. So put me down for about 300 per year.

We just got a notification from Bill Hicks that March 1 ammo goes up 15% I think it was, then on June or July 1 another 15%. I think that is for all ammo across the board. Folks should look into this and maybe stock up if they're short on anything.

If I told you, you wouldn't believe me. 2 trips per year to America for ducks and doves 10-12k per trip. Generally my friend and I go to the a sporting clays course and just have at it twice a month 500-700 rounds, we might pick a station and shoot it till the traps are dry. I try to shoot skeet and wobble trap 4-6 rounds a week. 20-35 pigeons over my dog fro training twice a month. I guess being single has some advantages.

Wow, I dont really know.
A few years ago I was at the range every Saturday or Sunday (usually one 100 bird round plus four fitasc sometimes two 100 bird rounds), plus tournaments. (my wife had alot to do with me cutting back, we reached an understanding or at least I was told to understand ). The past two years I have really cut back. So now maybe 4000 a year. You guys should definitely ask Carl Brandt. I bet even now as he has cut back, definitely burns up the most powder of us all. It definitely shows in his shooting. IMHO he is the man for the Parker Team and will always be so. He is gifted. |
I don't shoot much thats why I'm so bad at it, I need more practice.
I don't shoot clay targets from October through December as it's hunting season and I bet I don't shoot much more than 200 rounds at upland birds in a season. Clays begin in April and I shoot two rounds of sporting clays a week. Add in the shoots like Hausmanns, The U.P. Shoot (thats a min of two cases in a weekend) and the three or so local shoots and the number adds up in a hurry. My guess at targets is about 5000/yr, out of that I only keep my head down on 4000 of them and stop my swing on another 1200.:rotf: I now realize I'll never be any good but practice makes perfect:whistle: |

Sheesh... two-hundred rounds for a measely ten or fifteen upland birds in a season .... I guess you do need practice :corn: I now realize I'll never be any good but practice makes perfect:whistle: I dunno Rich... jury's still out on that one buddy...:bigbye: |
How many rounds a year do you shoot
Last year 7425 on clay games, over 3700 of these were with .16 ga. and with patterning & live birds probably around 8000 total.

Wow! I can't believe I was outed by my best buddy. Thanks a lot Doc.:rotf:
Well, all kidding aside, I did used to burn up a lot of powder. 10 cases was just slightly more than a 1 months supply. I'm guessing that I used to shoot over 25k rounds per year, but I have learned that throwing a lot of lead does not necessarily make you a good shooter. It does give you some experience to call on. If you want to shoot well, take some lessons from a good instructor that will work with you to develop a reliable technique. Strive for a sharp focus, a quiet mind and a smooth swing. Concentrate on the easy targets as intently as the hard ones. Shoot with other good shooters (here's where my pal Doc Truitt comes in) who can point out what you are doing wrong. A good coach can see what you can't. So nowadays I'm shooting less that 10k/year and better than ever, thanks to a little help from my friends. End of sermon. PS: Its time to start warming up for the Southern. I'm ready when you are John. |
John
Not only is Carl a gifted shot but a great guy. David PS-maybe the gifted shot part comes from a lot of hard ,smart work? |
Carl-There are easy targets???:vconfused:
