Cabelas & Damascus Barrels
Just spent a little time at Grandville MI Cabelas in their Gun Library. Took my 1879 GH 12 Guage in to see what they might offer. I was told they do not buy Damascus barrel guns. I questioned the local rep as I have seen them listed in their Gun Library. He emailed the regional rep in Pennsylvania and got back a flat reply, No longer purchase Damascus steel guns. Curious if any others had run into this lately?

Cabelas still sells guns? Last time I was in one I was informed that "handling of a firearm before a purchase is strictly prohibited - if you wish to inspect a firearm closer, you may do so after purchasing" I'd never been so politely told something so ridiculous in my life.

If your gun has sound barrels why not join up and sell them here?
|
It's Bass Pro Shops these days and no longer the Cabela's we used to know.
Mergers are rarely better for the consumer - Bass Pro Shops case in point!! . |
There are much better places to sell your gun
|
...or to buy anything anymore.

Big box stores have been unable to beat the smaller hunting and fishing stores. It is just a fact

Smaller stores aren't as concerned with having a team of lawyers and investors telling them what they can do and what they can't do. . |
What Dean and Mills said - look what happened to Dick's Sporting Goods - our local NOVA store used to be a stand-alone HUGE 2-story building with its own dedicated parking area - also huge, easy and convenient. When the owners decided to no longer carry military knockoff style type guns (AR-15 platforms & etc.) or dedicated "sniper type" rifles (their words), in the wake of a string of shooting incidents, the dominoes fell quickly.
They had a great firearms and ammo section; sold everything from bricks of .22s to gun safes at very competitive prices. Sporting rifles and metallic ammo bit the dust first; in one unannounced (THANKS, DICK!!) 4-day selling frenzy they blew out all of their hunting and target shotgun ammo. Next went gun accessories and cleaning supplies. When they unceremoniously announced that they were "consolidating space and inventories" by moving into our local moribund (read soon-to-be-dead) Fair Oaks Mall, the bottom really fell out. I don't know of anyone who is firearms oriented that shops there anymore. Anything we seem to need is readily available at current competitive prices (high though they be) at our local gun shows. If you're into Spandex and Under Armor, Dick's your boy; the last vestige of their connection to the outdoors is a medium-to-small hunting clothing section that is maintained for the lingering image, I imagine, of what they used to be. |
I've posted this before. I live five minutes from the ORIGINAL Dicks Sporting goods in Binghamton, where it all started. The gun counter is relegated to the back and by the charter when it went public, that store can't ever be closed. My father knew Dick Stack, a highly respected man, but I can't say anything terribly nice about the family now. They have an agenda, and it isn't good for our sport. We can see where their money goes up in these parts and it's surely not to protect our interests.

I patronized Dick's original Binghamton store from 1975 when I met my wife until they went "humanitarian", so to speak, about 2 years ago. I still buy my license each October at their Vestal Mall store for grouse hunting with my wife's extended family friends and relatives. I bought and read the recently published history of Dick Stack's life and business career with great interest. I view it as a very sobering chronicle of the demise of the small business / full service ethic of local sporting goods businesses in America and the ascent of the "whatever" ethic of the Big Box stores to which they all seem to inevitably succumb.

Cabelas did have a policy of not letting you handle/inspect guns until you bought them after the Bass Pro take over. Friends of mine that worked in the Gun Room at the Wheeling, Wv store were embarassed when they had to tell me this. The policy has since been changed, at least here, and you can now ask to inspect and handle the guns.
They would have really low balled you on that gun anyway. Better to sell it here. |
Speaking of Dicks.
Here is a head scratcher. Locally we have 3 Dicks stores. Two of them have removed all things firearms and ammunition related as Kevin mentioned above. But the one store still has everything. Long guns, hand guns, whatever. I dont get it.??? |
I am so disgusted with Dicks and Stores like them ,I won't even buy Golf Balls from them absolutely Not a Penny goes to them from my house ,and I reprimand all of my Hunting Buddies that still patronize them !

Company stores V franchise stores? . |
Dick’s got woked!

I refuse to shop at Dick's. In addition to the reasons above, they are overpriced.
|
They're like all typical hypocrites. Dicks WILL sell ammo and firearms if the local market has nobody to fill the void and if they didn't open a Field and Stream nearby. The same reason they jacked ammo prices up on older stock as soon as the run started two years ago. They WILL, by God, profit from you in turbulent times while also banging on their bully pulpit.
|
You only had to see the ads that Dick's was running during the holiday season to know what's wrong with the company. The management team is obviously more interested in making sure folks have a fashionable workout outfit than anything else.
