Ye Olde Purdey

2 Attachment(s)
Have always wanted one of the big three English guns. Never thought I would be able to acquire one. Fell upon an early Purdey, made an offer, and it was mine. Needs some love, but so what. It's a Purdey. Dates to 1863. Probably converted from pinfire to centerfire. Ordered a history letter for it. Will post better pictures and the letter when I receive it. Will be eating bread and beans for a while but ok with that.

Congratulations!
That gun almost warrants a visit to Dave Trevallion over in South Berwick.

Very nice find Bruce. You can order a letter via their web site, and small parts if they have them in stock, so to speak. Bread and beans are just fine. I am still eating my share from a similar “find” last summer. Post more photos when you can.

Stay safe,

Bruce, That is a great find! I like the Jones rotary action and it looks like it is in fantastic shape.

I got a Purdey under similar circumstances. It is an 1866 Thumb break action. It was at a Dealer for several years and then went to auction. I got it for just under 1/2 what the dealer was asking. It is well used and has some wear, but I am in the club!

I did get the letter, which I thought was worth it. I don't shoot mine enough, it is a wonderful in that respect. It is hard not to fall in love with English guns after seeing how well they were made even in the 1860s.

Congratulations again and post more pictures when you get the letter.

Looks like a fine old Jones lever hammer gun. And an original CF gun at that. At least from what I can see. Hope you can post more pics.

They must be coming out of the woodwork. I found mine stacked in a corner in a bad gun store.

Let’s meet at Ernie’s in June and shoot some five stand with “ye olds.”

Bill Murphy 02-01-2022 04:21 PM

Ernie has not scheduled a shoot on his website. ??? A Purdey sub-event? Sounds like a great idea. By the way, Bruce, your Purdey is a real screamer, so much condition. Mine isn't anywhere near as pretty, just a common Whitworth barrel bar in iron pigeon gun from 1921, yes, with hammers, one of the last.

John Davis 02-01-2022 06:42 PM

My Purdey is a single barrel trap.

john pulis 02-02-2022 08:34 AM

It always falls the first weekend in June. Ernie usually schedules, and posts such in SS, by March, so I would expect to read/see/hear by the end of this month.

Heck, Bruce, cut out the beans and you might be able to get a Boss or H&H somewhere down the road (and without the beans, the girls might like you better, too!:)) What a wonderful gun you have there!

Which reminds me, does anyone know what the H&H Badminton pair at LBS brought on Gunbroker this weekend? I was watching them but missed the end. They weere a composed pair put together by H&H and documented by them. They looked like two nice cased guns and were at 10,250 about 4 hours before the end of auction.

If it was on your watch list, click on all and see what it went for.

john pulis 02-04-2022 08:09 AM

Ernie’s is confirmed, June 2-4, as per Pete L’s posting.

john pulis 04-30-2022 07:28 AM

Ernie’s is a month away. Any interest in getting together and shooting a five stand with these?

Hi John,

I am going for the first time this year and would love an excuse to bring and shoot my Purdey...

She is well used, but looks and feels better in person than this picture I just took...

John Davis 04-30-2022 01:24 PM

A most humbling experience.

john pulis 04-30-2022 09:42 PM

Jay and John, they are beauties. Any excuse works for me as well. Let’s arrange to meet. We drive up on Wednesday, and will be staying at the Holiday Inn Express in Vestal. I never shot that SBT, but why not.

Purdey did not make many of those. Nice find. I’m sure there’s a story behind that one

Something like 55, mostly for the American market. Probably paid too much but the heart wants what the heart wants.

Bill Murphy 05-02-2022 01:18 PM

55 Purdey singles and how many Woodwards?
