I’m not really into paintings or art, but this one just makes me stop and stare, I personally am not a setter guy currently, I have 2 Brittany Spaniels and love them. I know many of you guys love Setters, so I thought this might be enjoyed. I just enjoy this one, no matter the dog,

Nice ! The gun to me kinda looks like a Winchester Model 24 !
You may be correct Craig,
I was trying to compare since I'm not real familiar with that model, but it does favor that model. Stan |
Thanks for posting Stan, Ive not seen that one before.
Those two-piece shotgun shell boxes are from long before the Winchester Model 24 came out. "Bird Scents" was used in the 1931 Western Cartridge Co. calendar. Note the calendar in the background to the right of the window.
This one always makes me think of my Uncle Larry. HE came home after he and my father had been shooting crows at the Monroe Reformatory dump. He came into his basement from his garage, hung his hunting coat on the hook and went upstairs. A few weeks later Aunt Helen noticed a horrible smell from the basement. Larry forgot to put the crows from his coat in the freezer to use for decoys next time out!! |
That setter sure brought back memories, Looks like Old Sam.
very nice....charlie
Dave, Back in the 80's I found a quail in my vest the same way as your aunt/uncle did!!!! Kinda smelled like dead night crawlers in my closet.......!!!
My dad's duck hunting buddy had an almost dead mallard crawl into the spare tire well of his Cadillac in January. Got pretty high by May. Very difficult to find the source.
bet that caddy smelled badly.....charlie
By May, Mr. Mallard was just a sloppy mess. Not sure if the car ever recovered
Since this is a 1931 Western calendar, I would guess that this is a prototype Winchester 21 with a snap off forend. "Never seen such a thing." you say? I have a prototype 21 with snap off forend in cutaway persuasion. Check out the long blue receiver and the relaxed pistol grip, featured on early 21s. John Olin was CEO of Western Cartridge at that time and fond of the 21.

Stuck at home, truck is in the shop. Thought you might enjoy these decanters found at flea markets. Would be nice to add a quail and pheasant.
Those are some nice pieces there Harold,
the decanters look to be products of RGS & AWS? Stan |
Quote:

Stan, they are all old whiskey decanters from the 60s and 70s. The bird ones are marked A Singer 1969 Field Birds, and .May have been Jim Beam. The setter was an Ezra Brooks decanter
Right, I think the field bird decanters predate the RGS and the AWS.
I have the woodcock decanter and I know both Harold and Brett have the grouse one. I only wish I had the grouse one to complete the set of two that have meaning to me. . |
If I find another, I'll buy it and it's yours.
That’s a really nice gesture Harold. Thank you.

Have you seen these Dean? All from the same China Co. Knowles.
Yes Harold. In fact I have the woodcock plate but not the grouse pkate. Those setter pups are wonderful but I don’t have that one.

I love the old paintings- lithos and glass that feature hunting scenes with dogs. I have a couple of Edmund Osthaus pieces who is considered one of the best at depicting these images. A ex girlfriend who had a antique shop bought me the whole set of Buffalo Pottery plates featuring game birds and pitchers with game scenes that I have in my China cabinet. Has anybody got the glass vases that L.C. Smith gave away as prizes? I think there are 3 different variations of these.
L.C. Smith author and collector, Townsend Breeden and I were discussing the Smith trophy vases a while back. He lives in a town of not many more than 100 souls adjacent to the small town where I lived at the time. I dug through my ebay files for neat stuff and discovered that a Smith vase had been sold not long before by a person who lives in his little town, probably no more than a mile or two from either of us. We both missed it.
