Twelve or twenty? Seems like a bargain to me if it is a twenty or even a sixteen.

Best,

Mike

Jeff Kuss 02-06-2011 03:14 PM

If it was an 0 frame trojan, it should be a twenty.

charlie cleveland 02-06-2011 04:26 PM

it was a 20 ga.. sorry shoulda posted this the first round. one of the venders there said that there was more people with 20 dollar bill in their pocket than those that hundreds....i was one of them fellows that had just a 20...it dont hurt to just look most of the time but it did when i seen that little 20 trogan.... charlie

Those little guns aren't worth a hoot. Wait until you see some nice tens or long barrel twelves. Little guns with no finish are way too expensive. Call me if you find one with a bunch of color on it.

Nope, good for nothing. The bottom is my O Frame V grade sixteen, weighs 5-14 with 28" barrels, has no finish left on the barrels or wood. I don't know what I was thinking when I bought it for $2800. Of course the finish may be worn off these little guns cause they were carried thousands of hours while following the pointing dogs around.

The top is a nice little well worn G grade 16 that belongs to my shooting student Joe Wood.

Don't know where those funny lookin birds came from.:)

As a matter of fact about 80% of the shotguns I own weigh 6 pounds or less.

Best,

Mike

And here is a Parker 28 gauge that weighs 5-5. Again another little gun and some more of those funny lookin birds!

And here is a Bobcat I took with the little O frame sixteen. I found a covey all scattered out and started hunting singles. Little 25 pound Molly pointed a three foot cedar tree and when I kicked it he ran out. The first shot probably killed him but I shot him again so he didn't jump up and give my dogs an ass kicking.

And not to belabor the point but here is a picture taken by my wife of me walking in on a point in Montana in September. Again that is the Parker sixteen O frame and we managed to put seven huns in the bag that day. It was block management / walk-in public hunting on a piece of ground that we had never seen before and no one had sent us there or pointed us that direction.

Too expensive! Not worth a hoot! Shame on you Bill!:)

Here's a little Trojan twenty with lots of color Bill and the second picture is my Trojan sixteen also with lots of color. These guns were likely refinished by the same hand and are nearly twins except for the gauge.

And here is a little O frame 16 gauge 28" DHE I owned - weighed 6-2, no case and not much blue or stock finish with a couple of Bobs I took with it and the dogs that pointed them for me in the next picture. I like little dogs too!

And here are some nice pictures my shooting student Joe Wood took. I was using the 16 gauge O frame V grade. There is just not much a fellow can do with these little guns but if he is creative he can get a little good out of them. Lord knows you can't sell them and can just barely give them away.

Here is another picture my shooting student Joe Wood took. That is the Parker Reproduction 28 again. As you can see I have only found a few things to do with the little guns and have to do the same boring things over and over. I did manage to down one of those Bobs even though I was undergunned.

Just having some fun Bill. I really didn't take offense and a big 12 bore Parker is certainly a great gun.

Bill Murphy 02-07-2011 08:36 AM

I do have a few little guns. My favorite is a little blued all over 1900 vintage VH 28, about the seventh or eighth 28 made. Factory bored cylinder and full and straight grip.

Dean Romig 02-07-2011 09:05 AM

On the 0-frame too Bill - Sweet little gun, how long are the barrels? Is she whippy?

Bill Murphy 02-07-2011 01:28 PM

26", Dean. Not whippy. The trick to eliminating "whippy" is shooting the little guns a lot. I don't think you can wear them out. I have been shooting another 2 1/2" chambered VH 28 for 51 years now with 2 3/4" shells, factory and reloads, and it is tight as new. I may bring my first Parker (my 28" 28) to the Southern if you will be there to wave it around. It is the gun that started me on Parkers in 1960.

Dean Romig 02-07-2011 01:33 PM

I believe a small, light gun can be controlled much better, whether whippy or not, by holding one's pointing hand beyond the forend.

Mike Shepherd 02-07-2011 03:11 PM

Bill those sound like optimized Bobwhite guns. I envy your having two!

I have looked at dozens of VH 28s on the interenet and can't get a feel for the pricing of shooters.

I have a 20 and a 28 Birmingham boxlocks factory choked cylinder and choke (the left barrel is marked "not for ball". I also have an Ithaca Grade 4 sixteen factory choked cylinder and full. The little O frame 16 V is factory choked 8 and 12.

Fun stuff.

Best,

Mike

Bill,

It would be nice to see your 28 alongside one of your 8 gauges. My avatar is an 0 framed 20 next to a 4 framed 10 gauge. The one time I was able to shoot at the Southern, I followed up the 10 gauge lifter with the 28. I new I had made a mistake after the first station, but I was already committed.

talk about a differance harry....what were you thinking... would love to hear the story.... and bill i dont think i would have owned up and said i had some of them good for nothing guns..ha my best to you gents... charlie

Harry Collins 02-07-2011 08:58 PM

I don't want to put words in Bill's mouth, but I took his statement to mean that worn out small bores were over priced.

-- Any `12 gauge M12 with original 32" barrel, whether plain or with solid rib will command a premium over the same conditioned M12 with 30" barrel- very few made, and most were in the 3" Magnum configuration-according to Riffle's M12 book- Charlie- a 2E 12 Smith with 27" barrels and a gold inset bar- usually on the quality pre-1913 Smiths you didn't see the gold bar inset in the top rib until you bought a Pigeon Grade- Did you get a chance to mesure the barrels and look over the gun? Smith did offer either 26", 27" or 28" barrels on their Skeet Special 12 gauges, but that was in the 1930's- they also then offered the HOT in either selective or non-selective mode- A good friend has a 12 FWE Skeet Special with 27" barrels, HOT selective, straight hand stock, checkered butt, and the later bulky schnabel style forearm.

charlie cleveland 02-09-2011 10:06 PM

i would have liked to have had that model 12 winchester with 32 inch barrel it was a nice gun...francis i looked that no2 grade lc smith over goo it had a letter with it stating the 27 inch barrel were factory... and thesigle selective trigger was also factory....the lc smith boys said a few of these gold bars come up every once in a while....i have a lc smith no 4 grade and it its a plain jane..no gold bar no ejectors and just fair lookin wood...some body must have just liked the engraving or didnot have the money to jazz the gun up... would you believe it were geting a pretty good snow as of now...looks like im gonna have to move north to get away from it...makes 4 th snow this year....we aint had 4 good snows in the last 40 years....guess ill get up and see if i can track a rabbit in the morning.... charlie
