New Paper Shells

Thanks for the heads up. I ordered 10 boxes just for the cool factor. Free shipping so that helps out on the cost.

CraigThompson 12-03-2021 12:16 AM

Wish they made some that were ounce and a quarter of #6’s trucking along at about 1350 FPS . Here pigeon pigeon pigeon :rotf:

Chris Pope 12-03-2021 08:27 AM

Thanks for the heads up!

Gary Laudermilch 12-03-2021 10:33 AM

Twenty bucks a box = ouch. If they make some paper 20's I'd be tempted.

keavin nelson 12-03-2021 10:53 AM

The wads in these are interesting, not your standard wad, perhaps developed just for this paper shell?

Andrew Sacco 12-03-2021 12:57 PM

Pretty cool looking. $20 is steep, but after spending a gajillion dollars on guns what difference does it make? There are worse ways to go broke : )

Mills Morrison 12-03-2021 01:17 PM

Higher ammo prices seems to be the "new normal". I too wish they had some in small bore.

Mills Morrison 12-03-2021 01:34 PM

How do you get free shipping?

I wonder them being a limited production run is part of the cost ?
Like some brass manufacturer's require a minimal order of 50k pieces to do custom batch. I think Federal says it takes about 3 days or so to complete the waxing/drying part for the paper tubes which adds significantly to production time vs plastic.

Mills Morrison 12-03-2021 01:39 PM

I am hoping enough people order them to make it worthwhile to add them to the permanent line up.

Milton C Starr 12-03-2021 01:53 PM

I like they went with a old school style headstamp.

Andrew Sacco 12-03-2021 02:04 PM

How would they work in a 2 5/8" 12g VH? I sometimes over obsess about such things.

They had those in plastic by the pallet load at a sporting goods place in Alabama couple months ago . A friend was down there for work and bought four flats and brought them back I think he paid about $80 a flat .

Bruce P Bruner 12-03-2021 02:16 PM

I succumbed for a couple of boxes for display. Just think, in a couple hundred years they’ll be worth a lot more.:rotf:

They would work nicely in my VH, though it’s a 3” chamber.:rotf:

Jay Oliver 12-03-2021 06:06 PM

I bought 10 boxes of the 1145fps. That's my reaction when anyone posts an ammo link these days...thanks Dave!

I think they should be fine in the one steel barreled 12 gauge Parker I have, though I was also thinking they would work well in an early A5 I have that I should shoot more.

This "New" item, offered under the Remington brand at Vista is for retail to consumer sales only. There still is not sufficient supply of raw materials to offer to the retail or distributor trade at this time. For the volume trap/skeet shooter, at $20 a box this will not garner much attention. For the casual shooter and someone who has a vintage shotgun, perhaps the price is worth it. Buyer's choice.

If they were Flyer loads meaning 1 1/4 ounces of #6’s going at 1300 plus I’d give them the $200 for a flat no problem . But a flat of these for pigeons would last me maybe a year .

John Davis 12-03-2021 08:53 PM

These got a lot of attention over on trapshooters.com. Mostly negative because of the price. But as I noted over there, Vista is offering STS shells for $15/box and Nitro 27 at $17/box. If you’re going through a flat or more a week, it’s all pretty pricey.

Craig,

Federal ran some Paper Flyer loads in Copper 7.5's earlier in the year. 1330 fps if I remember correctly.

I got a case but haven't broken into them yet.

In for four boxes over here. Most likely to go on display with my vintage stuff.

I have blown money on lesser things so I splurged. After all its almost Christmas.
Shells arrived today. I like everything about them. 5 boxes will go to friends for Christmas.
I will keep a box and shoot the rest on some quail and dove hunts.

I think the box is attractively designed but one of the Peters Vintage Bobwhites in place of the clay would look even better.

charlie cleveland 12-12-2021 03:04 PM

these look like collector boxes to me a hit from the start....charlie

Phillip Carr 12-12-2021 08:50 PM

I bought 97 flats a couple of years ago from an estate. Averaged $4.30 per box. I don’t need these paper shells I wanted them.
That said I have been shooting RST shells for years. With shipping they are about $20 per box.
I went Mearns quail hunting 4 times this past week and only shot a box and a half of 20 gauge shells.
So about $30 to hunt 4 days.
I don’t shoot clay targets very often and won’t be shooting Eurasian dove in any large number with any of these paper loads, but the smell alone reminds me of when I was a kid and will be worth every penny.
I don’t drink $100 a bottle scotch very often but occasionally I splurge and enjoy it.

Bruce Hering 12-13-2021 06:26 PM

I wonder what the pressure is in the 1145 fps load ? Any ideas or info ? EDIT OUT: I looked and they are out of stock on several choices (one of them my choice)

Phillip Carr 12-13-2021 08:42 PM

I am not sure. Nothing listed on the box. It does state Reduced felt recoil. Then also stated do not use in Twist or Damascus barrels.

Bruce, these loads would be loaded to standard velocity and pressure. Since it is a paper shell, and Remington has not loaded paper shells since 1960 or so, I would assume they are the same pressure as a Federal paper shell. Most of the major factories load to SAAMI pressure, nothing "low" like with a handload or RST. A 12 gauge shell would be in the 10,000 psi range.

Phil, Nice box, but a bit perplexing. The part that says 14 Grs. TARGET was Peters medium height brass shell for bulk smokeless powders. Their medium height brass shell for dense smokeless powder was the HIGH GUN. The Load No. 397x was for a TARGET 1 3/4-dram, 5/8-ounce load. Load No. 187x was for the HIGH GUN 14-grain, 5/8-ounce load.

Frank Srebro 12-14-2021 07:55 AM

I ordered a flat yesterday in 7-1/2 shot and 1145 speed. I always liked the Peters brand and perhaps was overly influenced in my youth by the Peters Packs the Power adverts in the sporting mags. The hardware stores in town didn't carry Peters and I'd ride my bicycle two towns up the line to a store that did. I was fortunate to do some fox hunting ahead of trailing hounds back then with a good man who took me under his wing, and when the baying swung towards me there was nothing like the confidence of having two Peters high brass 2's in my Western Arms double gun. They were the regular 1-1/4 ouncers at 1330 or so speed. Well anyway, I like Peters blue paper shells. Yeah I know these new Peters are target loads but they'll work just fine for birds in any number of my double guns. :)

Arthur Shaffer 12-14-2021 11:00 PM

I looked at these when I first saw them but nothing led me to believe they were low pressure, just a vintage look.

Victor Wasylyna 12-18-2021 12:52 PM

I shot two boxes of the new Peters shells through my VHE. Let me tell you: The smell is amazing!

I am ordering another flat.

-Victor

Mike Poindexter 12-23-2021 08:04 PM

I shot two boxes of the 7 1/2's at trap today. Used an old Ithaca SBT that had experienced chamber tightness with fired cheap steel base ammo. Checked these shells with a magnet--solid brass. No problems with extraction. May buy another flat if they still have them.

Gary Laudermilch 12-23-2021 09:29 PM

Boy, you guys are really hung up on the Peters name and a pretty box. Why not get hold of some Federal paper hulls and load them to whatever specs you want for $5.50 s box. And they smell just as good! Oh, I forgot, Parker guys are always a cut above!

Here you go, Frank. The real deal. Sold earlier this month at Ward's. $15.
