Jeffreys sxs today
I was hunting quail this afternoon at Myles Standish and ran into a nice gent who was carrying a 12 ga sxs Jeffrey's double gun. (I may be spelling Jeffreys incorrectly) Anyway, it was all original with straight grip english style stock. Engraving on it was still clean and crisp. Untouched. Very nice sxs. First that I've seen. I invited the gent to hunt with me and my setter later this week.
Just love to see sxs's in the field and meet folks who appreciate them. |
I have never seen a jeffere but I ve read about them they are very good guns...charlie

A guy on the 16ga site used to talk about his "Wee Jeff". Saw some pics of it; sweet little gun!
|
Allen, what are you using on quail theses days?
|
Garth, I only shoot 20 ga on quail with 7 1/2 or 8 shot. Depe6on my whim of the day, I may use a 20 ga Trojan with 26 inch barrels, or 20 Repro or my 20 GH.

Are the quail wild or stocked?
|
Nice to know you can still shoot quail in Mass. It’s been many years since I heard quail on the cape.
|
Steve, the quail are stocked by the state at a number of game management areas. 3 times per week during the season. Myles Standish, Crane reservation and other areas
|
Huh... I didn't know MA was stocking quail at Crane.
I used to hunt there a lot in my 30's and 40's but there were too many hunting in there for my liking, LOTS of gunfire ALL the time and I saw some weird stuff being done by weird people. Haven't been back since. . |
Dean, that's what I ve been told. I don't hunt Crane
Just myles. However the state wma listing only says that pheasants are stocked at Crane in falmouth. Going to Markovwr Saturday. Sophie will have fun. |
If the gun you saw was similar to these, you noticed they can be nicely decorated.

Dean, I received an invite to hunt the quail fields at Crane today with Tom Jay and Dave Cookson..vast number of quail fields and relatively easy to walk thru unlike myles standish. There were other hunters but the area is large enough to accommodate. Tom had his setter Max and Dave had his brittany. Both dogs worked well. We found birds and had good shooting. I left Sophie, my setter at home as she worked pretty hard yesterday for 2 1/2 hrs and I thought I'd give her the day off. I may take her down there this coming Monday. The quail fields are located on Hayway Rd. Take rte 151 to Currier rd, then take a right turn on Hayway. Fields are on the right side of the rd. Can't miss them. Oh, I took 2 quail over Max with my 20 ga Repro.
