8 gauge event at Hidden Hollow?

I had heard some talk about one. I am getting ready and wanna know if I should bring mine.

Craig Larter 05-25-2021 03:34 PM

I have not heard of any firm plans. All the 8gauge shooter could gather at the Mad Jack say Friday morning 10am??? Any interest?? Craig

Stan Hoover 05-25-2021 04:32 PM

I would be up for meeting other 8 gauge shooters for sure, I will plan to be there @ 10:00.
Can't wait:)

Craig Larter 05-25-2021 06:04 PM

I will try to call Ernie tomorrow to see if he will have the MJ set up. If yes we can get the word out to the LCS and Lefever collectors. Would be fun if we can pull it off.

Craig,

there was some earlier suggestions of meeting at the Bo Whoop shoot, try the 8's on some long targets. Although we couldn't participate in the official Bo Whoop competition since I believe most of us are shooting more than 1 1/4 oz loads?

Doesn't matter to me.

CraigThompson 05-25-2021 06:45 PM

How about a 5 stand practice field like we did at Sanford ?

Mark Beasland 05-25-2021 08:17 PM

I talked with Ernie today and he thought Mad Jack would work. I’ll be there at 10 on Friday if that’s where it’s at!

Craig Larter 05-26-2021 04:43 AM

I'm in at 10am Friday, we need a few more to commit???? Let us know if your in.
We could just advance from station to station hit or miss. That way we enjoy shooting as a group.

Mark Beasland 05-26-2021 08:56 AM

I know a few 8gaers that are attending but not on this forum. I will pass the word.

Bill Murphy 05-26-2021 09:40 AM

Sorry, Craig, but Friday is my granddaughter's high school graduation. However, my opinion is that Mad Jack is the ideal venue for eight gauge competition or show off. Have a good time.

Mark Beasland 05-26-2021 01:18 PM

Jon Hoshord will be there with his Greener 8

Mark Beasland 05-26-2021 01:28 PM

Dan Ongna will also shoot his 8.

Craig Larter 05-26-2021 05:01 PM

I posted a notice on the LCSCA and LCA forums. The Hausmann's Mad Jack is VERY challenging with LONG and FAST targets as you move around the field. Should be BIG FUN.

CraigThompson 05-26-2021 06:39 PM

I’m bringing a pair .

CraigThompson 06-04-2021 04:55 PM

Well I thought the event was rather intresting to say the least

Brian Dudley 06-04-2021 08:18 PM

Whoever was shooting black powder 8... that was LOUD!

Harold Lee Pickens 06-04-2021 08:31 PM

That would have been quite a show. I remember shooting the 20 ga course a few years ago, or more with mark Ouellete shooting a very nice 8 ga.

Yes it was ! Standing behind that gentleman the first time he put a BP load in was almost painful to listen to ! Bad thing was he didn’t know which of his shells were loaded with BP

We had tons of fun at the 8 gauge shoot on Friday at the Mad Jack layout!! The last man standing was Mark Kircher, but everyone shot very well.
Names of participants from right to left: John Hosford, Mark Besland, Craig Thompson, Stan Hoover, Rick Simmonds, Jim Hall, Craig Larter, Forgot the next name??, Mark Kircher. Lets do it again next year and draw in some more 8 gauge shooters and collectors.

CL thats some wonderful coloration in the wood on that 8ga Parker in the bottom picture .

charlie cleveland 06-05-2021 08:06 PM

wish I could have been there....nothing is like a 8 gauge....except maybe a 4 gauge....I eonder what makers of the 8 ga were there....charlie

Craig Larter 06-05-2021 09:17 PM

Milton the dark spots are were the finish is worn down to the bare wood and most likely the owner rubbed in linseed oil which has darkened with time. But it does add character in my opinion.

8 Gauge Event

John Hosford was shooting the black powder loads. I was in the vendors tent the first time he touched one off. It shook the whole tent. I have never heard any gun boom like his did. The recoil was tremendous. I would have loved to see that go off at night.

I agree , I think it brings a nice contrast to the other features overall . Looks to have actually been fielded as a proper big bore fowling piece .

I’m sure it was very much like the concussion that reverberates throughout the shooting grounds when Frank Cronin touches off his massive 10 bore Parker with a heavy charge of black powder.

.

Daniel Carter 06-07-2021 08:22 AM

I will never forget the first time i heard Frank's 10 at the New Years shoot. The concussion lifted my pant legs and was louder than any shot i had ever heard outside the army. The 8 must have been something to see and hear.

David Holes 06-07-2021 09:14 AM

I wonder how much powder they put in the 10 ga.

MARK KIRCHER 06-07-2021 09:17 AM

In the Winchester 2 7/8 black powder blanks they load them with 8 drams of BP. Other 2 7/8 blanks or signal loads I have seen are also loaded with 8 drams of BP .

David Holes 06-08-2021 08:14 AM

Thats alot of powder

I'm not a BP user except in a couple original ML's .

I do however load 36.5 grains of Universal Clays with 1 3/4 ounces of shot in m 8 gauge loads . I also have no issue with the 1 1/2 ounce load pushed by 31 grains of Clays . It's just easier for me atleast to do the 1 3/4 ounce load then I need not worry with card spacers in the shotcup .

I think the 1 3/4oz loads I have are 46gr of bluedot. The 8 gauge can actually be pretty versatile with its payload. I have seen loads from 1.5oz up to 3oz. Even if I had a gun proofed for the 3oz loads I wouldnt want to shoot those in a 12-15lb gun. I shot a 3oz 10 ga load before and it felt like being in a car wreck from a 11lb single I said never again lol.

charlie cleveland 06-08-2021 12:56 PM

the 1 3/4 ounce load is probly the best all around load in the 8 ga...I too have shot 3 ounce loads in the 8 and 10 ga. in the 10 ga the patterns were not that good out of a full choke Ithaca mag 10...in the 8 ga pattern were fair but a 2 1/2 ounce load the patterns was really good a turkey would not stand a chance...I have some factory Winchester loads with 2 ounce of shot and 7 drams of black powder that probably was a super stout load...that is the heaviest old factory loading I ve run across....charlie

David Holes 06-08-2021 01:09 PM

I have been shooting 1 5/8 loads in the big 10 and thought I would try a 1 3/4 load but it was more then I wanted.

I also got terrible patterns with the 3oz 10 ga loads, they were made by nitro ammo. Didnt matter which choke I tried either , I think 3oz is just to much shot for a 10 ga . The best heavy lead loads or well the ones that patterned best for me were the Winchester HV turkey loads . In 10 and 12 ga 3.5" they are/were 2oz at 1300fps .
My 8ga is 14lbs and it barely moves when shooting the 1 3/4oz loads.

I would love to see how the 8 ga patterns larger shot sizes like #2s BB T shot etc .

I used to feed every kind of load you can think of out of my BPS 10 ga . It actually patterned T shot pretty evenly at 40 yards with a light mod choke .

Im still trying to decide what I want to load in the 8 ga shot size wise.

My 10 loads are pretty much all 1 1/4 ounces with SR7625 or 1 1/8 with Red Dot . I did load a few 1 1/2 with SR7625 but a very few . 10 gauge with 1 1/4 ounce is plenty for me .
