Senator John Warner DHE!!
|
The buttplate is fine. But the screws... that is a different story.
And to imagine that someone thought all those inlays looked good. |
"with an added vent rib by a very competent gunsmith".... looks original to me judging by the hand-engraved legend which looks exactly like other originals I have seen.
. |
Why does the safe show "R" instead of "SAFE"? Is this some type of barrel selector?

I could deal with the I think replacement forend but I’d have a hell of a time dealing with the funky inlays .
|
I believe the forend is also original... except for the inlays of course.
. |
I have looked at this gun online at some point in the past. I do like seeing someone making a gun their own...
I like it because it's different. All I would need to do is replace the phillips screws in the buttplate and have a spliter forend fitted. |
If it only had double triggers, I might just be in the market.
|
John, it can be converted back to double triggers.

One word: Why?

Depends on the period. Some were bulky like this one while others had more eye appealing smooth lines.

With this gun, that would require replacing the whole trigger plate. And I agree with your assessment dean on the forend. It is completely original to the gun. Or at least is factory work. |
Why is a good question. Senator Warner was Elizabeth Taylor’s 6th Husband, he liked flash.

Yes, the gun was not “born” as a VR since it has the concaved frame. But examples of legitimate vent ribs being added on a factory return have been observed on other guns. Everything that is shown of the rib appears that it is factory work. The transition down into the rib extension is not shown though. |

The gun likely started life with original Parker Bros. SST, see the R and L on the trigger plate --
Attachment 95844 and was later converted to a Miller hence the R seen on the top tang. Attachment 95845 The gun is from about 1922 vintage originally, five years before Senator John was born. The beavertail is the shape shown in my repro April 1923 and January 1927 catalogs. The vent rib isn't yet included in the 1923 catalog, but is in the 1927 catalog. |
I need to stop looking at it on GI or I might end up with it. It is growing on me for some reason.
|
Jay, It needs some love. Don't be shy...
|
"No Parker date for it coming back to the factory"? What's that all about? I believe there is a suspicion that some very early vent rib (factory) guns were made on frames that were not flat. Jake is a volume paraphernalia dealer who has an in with high end Virginia estates, but he is not a Parker expert. Interesting gun but the Warner connection adds nothing to its value, in my opinion. Jake has had the gun for some time.
|
For me anyway.... Not that any Parker is ever truly ugly, but this one pushes that envelope.... Never a fan of inlays in the wood of a gun.... Except maybe the small Ebony inlays at front of the forend sort of thing.
To each their own, as it should be. |
The more I look at her, the more I like her. Alas, I'm afraid an early bird may have already gotten this worm.
|
You guys are missing the point. Why would anyone want John Warner’s shotgun? He was an absolutely horrible US Senator for Virginia. As a former Virginia guy, I still gag a little when I hear his name. Sorry, I got sidetracked. His gun is also butt ugly. On another note, he did keep a framed picture in his office of Liz Taylor. I thought that was endearing.
|
Good Lord! Who on Gods green earth would ever buy such a gun?
|
Well it sold. And if this gun ever showed up at the People's Choice Award, I'd vote for it multiple times. Fortunately there's no voter ID requirement for the PCA.

It appears he is still living, the new owner may be able to ask questions.

Looks to me as if it could provide plenty of employment for Brian.
