GH refresh / restore question
Hello
I recently acquired a post 30's era GH 20 ga. with 26" skeet/skeet barrels. It feels like a really nice gun and I would like to be able to shoot it. The barrels seem to be in good shape with the exception of the right barrel end having a small flat spot from a drop. I see no evidence of cracks, dents or rib looseness. The receiver seems to be in good condition. This gun was clearly well used. The stock was broken and "repaired" with nails and a brass screw inserted horizontally through the receiver!. The forend has something I have never seen, the sides were crudely cut down about a half inch on the rear 3/4's? My question for you is pertaining to the barrels and receiver. Can someone recommend a shop to reblue the barrels and go through the receiver for me. I don't know if that would be a single shop or two? I am not looking to restore it to show quality, just to get it back to being a nice looking shooter. I am repairing the stock since it is a matching numbers item and I think the forend I will refinish as is since it a mystery why someone would modify it like they did. I assume a new stock and forend would be quite expensive to have replaced. I know any estimate of cost would be only a guess but some ballpark numbers would be appreciated. I live in Houston if anyone has a local shop to recommend. Thank You Michael |
Where do you live Michael?

Welcome Michael! Yes, let us know where you live and some photos of the damage would help too.

Barrels ???...Breck Gorman....................
|
I live in Cypress TX. (west of Houston). The barrels are spec steel. I assume the barrels were blued steel and the receiver was not color case hardened?
I will upload pictures when I learn how to do it! |
Yes the barrels were rust blued and the frame was originally color case-hardened.

Here are some pics. I guess I could get a replacement forend for this, any thoughts?

Wow! How lucky are yoy to have an original GHE 20 gauge Skeet gun!!
I don't think anyone modified that forend, I think it broke and someone smoothed the jagged edge of the break. I see no reason why it would have been cut out like that intentionally. Is the stock a pistol grip or a straight grip? . |
It's a straight stock.
|
That gun sure has seen a lot of use.

Even BETTER!! . |
It looks to me like a beaver tail forend that took a wicked blow from something. As far as the value you asked about start with what you paid for it. A 20 gauge straight stock skeet gun with single trigger and beaver tail forend might be one of those rare Parker’s that you could get back what you put into it. Maybe even make a little profit.

Michael if you start with $10,000 to fully restore that gun correctly you may have money left over for a few trips to McDonalds. Do not count on recovering your investment if your plan is to make the gun shootable.

Post pictures of the barrel flats with clear markings. A GH is unlikely to be a skeet gun. Does it have a two piece extractor, suggesting ejectors? What is the serial number? We can look up the options that are original to the gun in the Serialization Book.
|
It is definitely an ejector gun, there being no stop screw in the lug for an extractor rod.
It’s a GHE Skeet gun. . |
Dean, not neccesarily a skeet gun. It would depend on the barrel flat markings. Field guns with skeet options are not uncommon. I own a VHE with all options choked modified and full of the skeet gun era. We will wait for the poster to post pictures of the barrel flats and serial number. Great gun, I wish I owned it.

Bill, the barrel flats are clearly stamped SKEET OUT and SKEET IN in the second picture on page 1 of this thread. Of course, my eyes are younger than yours and I recently got new glasses so you’re at a disadvantage...
