turkey hunting tpday

took off hunting at2.30 this evening when I got to my hunting place 2 big long beards were already on the field...I finally got me a hiding place but the big boys would not come to my calls...they left the field and I dib not see them anymore...about 6.00 2 more big turkeys flew across a creek and came toward me but for some reason they flew back across the creek...then at 6.20 a lone jake came by me headed to were the other turkeys had crossed the creek...I eased out of there and come to the house...gona try getting up early and be set up to hunt by daylight....charlie

got up at 4.30 in the woods at my blind by 5.15..2 gobblers were really telling the news...they were about 200 yards from me...at daylight both gobblers flew down and headed away from me I figured they had hens with them...after about an hour had past with them gobbling every ten minutes or so ...I started calling to the gobblers only one answered me I believe he was a quarter of a mile away...the other gobbler was almost out of hearing by now...the closest gobbler had started coming closer after about an hour passed by he had come close to me then I seen him step out of the woods he was at 30 yards..i raised up the parker 10 ga hammerless and fired the left barrel...could not believe it I cleanly missed this turkey...he ran into the woods doing 90....I waited about 20 minutes and yelped on my call...at about 100 yards that same turkey came into the field again he stayed about 5 minutes and went back into the woods...the other gobbler never showed...been a long time since I missed a turkey but it happened today...got to try again tomorrow.....will try the 8 ga. next week....charlie

Charlie: I am sitting on the throne one one morning and I hear this Beep, beep, beep and wonder what the hell is that and where is it coming from. Next morning the same thing and I finally realize its coming from me.... Yea my battery warning. So, I call my electronics guy and he calls me back and they run a remote. He tells me I have a good 30 days left on the battery and we schedule a replacement for the generator..... Replacement goes as planned and all is well.

I suspect yours will tell you when its time.... Aint modern medicine amazing...

When your defribulator goes off make sure nobody is touching you at the time.
My brother in law has one and he operates heavy machinery. He was operating a loader when his went off successively. His boss saw him in trouble and climbed up to help him and he was trying to get my BIL out of the cab when it went off again... knocked the boss right off the machine.

they say the shock is pretty bad...I wore the life vest which will shock you if your heart acts up...it shocked me the 2nd night I wore it they carried me to the er room put me on the table it shocked me the 2 nd time then it shocked me again it brought me straight up on the table after that 3 shock...don't want to be shocked like that again but it saved my life...charlie

My brother-in-law’s defribulator is a surgically implanted unit beneath the skin of his chest.

We can't have an 8 gauge show & tell without you Charlie, not sure where you're at but surely close enough to drive over?

Stan

charlie cleveland 04-14-2021 12:43 PM

I’m sorry to hear about your loss of eye sight and stroke but glad you’re still with us. I know you’re in the south, but approximately where if you care to say?

Dean Romig 04-18-2021 11:52 AM

will try if the turkey will cooperate this week...suppose to be pretty cool the first of this week makes for hard hunting the gobblers don't want to gobble to much...that gobblers head and the case colors of that hammer gun really stand out..charlie

charlie cleveland 04-19-2021 08:55 PM

no gobbling going on this evening but a small hen did come in the field and joined us for about 2 hours...thought sure a gobbler would come out since we had a live decoy for a while...I carried the eley 8 gauge shells and no 6 of my own ready rolls....the eleys were no 4 s....maybe tomorrow.....charlie

charlie cleveland 04-20-2021 08:02 PM

did not go this evening I had some work to do even if you are retired work still comes up...but I hope tomorrow will be different...will try the 8 ga parker hammer gun tomorrow aint had it out since mike and me tried to get him a bird a few years back...we almost got him one...charlie

charlie cleveland 04-22-2021 06:23 PM

was not feeling good this evening sio I just sat in my recliner thinking about hunting but never saw nothing in that chair maybe tomorrow....charlie

Jack Cronkhite 04-22-2021 07:49 PM

Charlie. If you close your eyes and drift off just a little you’d be amazed at the size of gobblers you can take from a recliner. I do that a lot for wild pheasants. Cheers Jack

charlie cleveland 04-24-2021 07:33 PM

John Dallas 04-28-2021 12:49 PM

Was out yesterday and had a really close encounter with a bird. Unfortunately, it was a robin who was in a group zooming around getting ready for some adult activity. He hit me in the side of the head. Sure will keep you awake

charlie cleveland 04-28-2021 07:43 PM

now that is funny getting attacked by a robin.....charlie

charlie cleveland 04-30-2021 08:42 PM

This morning I harvested a very nice Tom with a GH 12 ga using a soft shooting hand load of sixes. I got both from a fellow member of PGCA. Super gun, super load. NOW if I can only figure out how to post a picture from my iPhone.

After 5 days of birds within range, but no shot I finally connected today. I was trying to save the birds at my farm for my son, and was hunting the sportsman's club adjacent to my farm this morning, but the only birds I heard were across the next ridge over on my farm. So I made the 1/2 hr hike over to my place, and just as I topped out of my logging rd. into my top field a bird gobbled hard off my left, and certainly in range. Couldnt see him thru the multiflora, but he was already within gun range. Could hear him spit and drum and gobble for forty minutes, but could only see a blur thru the brush. I finally moved about 2 feet and could just make him out. I was carrying my 870 Wingmaster from the late 1950's--bought it with grass cutting, hay baling money my jr year in 1971. It now sports a 21" barrel and turkey x-tra full choke tube, and a Weaver K2.5 scope. Finally found his head in a gap thru the brush and shot. I was using old Active 2 3/4" shells with 1 5/8 oz nickel 4's--love those shells. Old gobbler with 11" beard and 1 1/4" spurs, put me in 1st place in our clubs big turkey contest. Had him for dinner tonight, and the rest will go in the smoker tomorrow. I have carried my GH12 hammer, and 16 grade 0 hammer, but today opted for the 870 because it has a sling, and was walking long distance..Pictures to follow
